Judgement - When you see someone in sin, does it provoke in you Judgment or Compassion?

The Message Chapter 7

1–5 7 “Don’t pick on people, jump on their failures, criticize their faults—unless, of course, you want the same treatment. That critical spirit has a way of boomeranging. It’s easy to see a smudge on your neighbor’s face and be oblivious to the ugly sneer on your own. Do you have the nerve to say, ‘Let me wash your face for you,’ when your own face is distorted by contempt? It’s this whole traveling road-show mentality all over again, playing a holier-than-thou part instead of just living your part. Wipe that ugly sneer off your own face, and you might be fit to offer a washcloth to your neighbor.

6 “Don’t be flip with the sacred. Banter and silliness give no honor to God. Don’t reduce holy mysteries to slogans. In trying to be relevant, you’re only being cute and inviting sacrilege.

1 “Refuse to be a critic full of bias toward others, and judgment a will not be passed on you. 2 For you’ll be judged by the same standard that you’ve used to judge others. The measurement you use on them will be used on you. 3 Why would you focus on the flaw in someone else’s life and yet fail to notice the glaring flaws of your own? 4 How could you say to your friend, ‘Let me show you where you’re wrong,’ when you’re guilty of even more? 5 You’re being hypercritical and a hypocrite! First acknowledge your own ‘blind spots’ and deal with them, and then you’ll be capable of dealing with the ‘blind spot’ of your friend. 6 “Who would hang earrings on a dog’s ear or throw pearls in front of wild pigs? They’ll only trample them under their feet and then turn around and tear you to pieces!

The Message Chapter 8

The religion scholars and Pharisees led in a woman who had been caught in an act of adultery. They stood her in plain sight of everyone and said, “Teacher, this woman was caught red-handed in the act of adultery. Moses, in the Law, gives orders to stone such persons. What do you say?” They were trying to trap him into saying something incriminating so they could bring charges against him.

6–8 Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger in the dirt. They kept at him, badgering him. He straightened up and said, “The sinless one among you, go first: Throw the stone.” Bending down again, he wrote some more in the dirt.

9–10 Hearing that, they walked away, one after another, beginning with the oldest. The woman was left alone. Jesus stood up and spoke to her. “Woman, where are they? Does no one condemn you?”

11 “No one, Master.”

“Neither do I,” said Jesus. “Go on your way. From now on, don’t sin.”

What is the lie we are believing that drives us into a Critical Spirit or Judgment? (i.e. Trying to Control is Fear, Self Righteousness, etc.)
What is the truth the Lord wants us to see about having a Critical Spirit or standing in Judgement? (i.e. He does not want us throwing stones, as he is the only on that is the Good Judge)
There is only one that can lead a person into an understanding of their need to remove the smudge, or the board it is the person of the Holy Spirit. He will usher us into all truth. That is not to say that the Holy Spirit will not use us to give a good edifying word to people. Its all about being lead into all truth…
Being critical, standing in judgement, and worry (covered in Chapter 6) along with bitterness are all forms of poison to our body, soul and spirit. God wants us to live free, and transparent lives, so we can understand that we all are on a journey together, a process (as Bill has preached) and he is working with us all on our smudges and specs. It becomes a “board or beam” when we use it to beat someone else with it.
Those people are on a dark spiral downward. But if you think that leaves you on the high ground where you can point your finger at others, think again. Every time you criticize someone, you condemn yourself. It takes one to know one. Judgmental criticism of others is a well-known way of escaping detection in your own crimes and misdemeanors. But God isn’t so easily diverted. He sees right through all such smoke screens and holds you to what you’ve done.
