Its stoning time again..
For the second time in just two chapters, we read that the Jews have picked up stoned to stone Christ.
They seem to be a little quick on the draw when it comes to this stoning business.
Actually three times in the book of John already, the Jews have sought the life of Jesus.
The first time around:
They understand his claim.
They reject His claim.
John
In , Jesus tells these Jewish leaders that he is the Great I am from the Old Testament.
They want nothing to do with this type of claim.
Because that is the God they supposedly serve.
They most certainly understand what he has said.
They have rejected what he has said.
Now we come to .
He has explained the basis of the security of our salvation as being rooted in Christ and the Father.
And he now has claimed to be one with the Father.
Again, the Jews understand what he says.
They just reject what he says.
So they try to kill him.
Then Jesus stops to ask a question.
Think about this for a moment.
These men have readied their aim.
They have the rocks in their hand.
Rocks I would add are made by the very one they are wanting to throw them at, and Jesus asks them a question.
Couple things here:
1. Jesus isn’t afraid.
He knows they cant take his life.
He is the one who will give his life.
We don’t have to feel sorry for Jesus.
He is the sovereign God who holds all things in His hands.
2. Jesus asks heart wrenching questions.
