Engage: Many would wonder, how Charles was able to be so positive in negative situations? How he could be so hopeful when things might appear hopeless? I have two answers.

He was a farmer. How else would you define farming than a constant capacity to overcome negativity and hopelessness!

Expand: The apostle Paul's life was built upon faith and hard work. At that life's end he provided one of the best biblical images of how we should pass on a living, hopeful legacy to others.

6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.

Like Paul Charles experienced a series of difficulties in his race that could have left him feeling defeated, discouraged, and demoralized. It did not happen that way. In my last lucid conversation with him he was encouraging and upbeat.
