Those Who Mourn

24. THOSE WHO MOURN ()

Mourning means to be sorry, or broken-hearted. Note the four things that people mourn for

I. SORROW—

A. Sorrow for our failures

(Example of Peter who denied Christ, then wept bitterly)

B. Sorrow for our coldness

(Peter followed afar off—warmed himself at another fire)

C. Sorrow for our doubtings

(Thomas had to see before he would believe)

D. Sorrow for our backslidings

(Peter, James, John sleeping while Jesus was praying)

E. Sorrow for our shortcomings

(Isaiah, “Woe is me, for I am undone”)

II. SEPARATION—

A. There is hope in death—

(As Christians, we shall be with Christ in heaven)

B. There is joy in death—

(We lost nothing, and gain heaven

C. There is life in death—

(This speaks of eternal life)

D. There is peace in death—

(There is no fear of death—death begins life eternal)

E. There is hope in death—

(Our weak, mortal body put aside and our soul with Christ)

III. SPIRITUALITY

A. Lukewarm—

(Thought they had all, but lukewarm in their experience)

B. Looseness

(Judas became lukewarm and sold Christ)

C. Indifference

(Peter’s words, “Wash not only my feet, but all of me”)

IV. SOULS

A. Their condition lost—

(All born in sin and need to be born again by the power of God)

B. Their doom—hell—

(Unless they accept Christ, there is no hope)

C. Their uncertainty—

(Life is so short and so uncertain—taken at any time)
