The Effects of Pentecost

Acts 2:1–13 ESV
1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”
We get too focused on what happened on the day
Events
We miss the meaning or effect that God intended

First lets look at events

Jesus told them to wait until they received power from on high.
Acts 1:4 ESV
4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me;
They were all together
There was a mighty rushing wind (same word as in creation ,breathed into their nostrils)
Genesis 2:7 ESV
7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
They had a divided (different) tongues rest on each one
They had a divided (different) tongues rest on each one
They were filled with the HS and spoke in other tongues
People were astonished hear their own languages
Peter spoke
3000 people excepted Jesus as the Messiah

What does this all mean?

Jesus know that they needed the HS to live the live God intended them to live.
With the HS comes power to do so
That is why He said it is good that I go
John 16:7 ESV
Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
They were waiting to receive power not “speaking in other tongues”
Power, the ability to do something, is what they needed and wanted
They were all in agreement
Throughout the book of Acts, we see the HS doing just that
Divided (different) tongues rested on them
This goes back to the Tower of Babel
Man didn’t want to listen to God
Man didn’t want to listen to God
God gave them to follow other spiritual being (elohims)
God scattered and divided their tongues
God gave them to follow other spiritual being (elohims)
God scattered and divided their tongues
God was bring back all the people of the world
3000 people believed
Went back to their homes
Pentecost is about harvest (spring or early)
we make it about the gifts
that’s why we are divided about it today

Who wants the power to be able to do what God intended us to do

Are you let Him give you this power or are you going to stop Him.
