I. LEADERSHIP IS SERVANTHOOD
I. LEADERSHIP IS SERVANTHOOD
1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” 8 Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
John 13:1
Jesus, The greatest leader who ever lived…modeled serventhood.
-Humbled himself.
-picked up a water basin
-a towel in hand
-bent his kneed
-washed the diciple’s feet.
The is not the only time Christ modeled serventhood.
In the book of Isaiah, Jesus is called the Sufferent Servent.
-There was another time he humbled himself.
-Didnt pick up a water basin, but a cross
-He didnt take a towel in hand, he took nails
-He didnt stoop over and bend his knee…but he extended his arms...
-He didnt wash the disciples feet....he washed all our sins away.
II. LEADERSHIP IS STEWARDSHIP
II. LEADERSHIP IS STEWARDSHIP
-God has sovereignly gifted you with spiritual gifts.
-All God called pastors have been gifted with teaching ability
-In the qualifications of pastor in …the ability to teach is a requirement to be a pastor.
1 The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. 2 Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, 5 for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.

8 Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. 9 They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. 11 Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well. 13 For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
14 I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, 15 if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth. 16 Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness:
He was manifested in the flesh,
vindicated by the Spirit,
seen by angels,
proclaimed among the nations,
believed on in the world,
taken up in glory.
-ALl the qualifications of a pastor are charater based with the exception of one…and it is ability based.
-A pastor must be able to teach.
Ephesians 4:11-
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers,
Ephesians
…God has sovereignly gifted you and called you for a purpose.
See VERSE 12
…And he expects you to fulfill that purpose with the gifts he has given you and the place he has planted you.
BUT…your function in the office of pastor is temperary.
Leadership is stewardship..and stewardship is temperal…and your accountable to GOd for how, where, and WHEN you use those gifts to accoplish his purpose.
12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
III. LEADERSHIP IS SELFLESS
III. LEADERSHIP IS SELFLESS
3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
Philippians
10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.
Leadership always looks to the good of others before it looks to the good of oneself.
2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly;
3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.
-Again we look at Jesus as the perfect example of this...
-The Cross demonstrated this sort of selfless love.
IV. LEADERSHIP IS INTEGRITY
IV. LEADERSHIP IS INTEGRITY
a. PERSONAL INTEGRITY
a. PERSONAL INTEGRITY
You must be walking with Christ....
Do you know Him?
Intiment way?
Do you hear him? HIS SHEEP KNOW HIS VOICE? Do you hear him call you? Hear him lead and direct you?
Walking with Christ requires you to be a man of prayer and word.
And I mean powerful prayer
Prayer that understands who his hearing your potentions.
…THE GOD OF THE UNIVERSE
b. Prayer that knows there is nothing to big or too small to take before the throne of Grace
C. Prayer that trusts him…honors him…exalts him…praises him...
2. But you need to be in THE WORD...
a. It is not enough to talk to God in prayer, but we must realize that he has spoken to us in His Word.
b. faithful student…study...
c. The word is where the power is....So we study the word…preach the word…hide the word in our heart that we might not sin against God.
b. PRACTICAL INTEGRITY
b. PRACTICAL INTEGRITY
…Not only do you have to have your personal walk with Christ in order, but you have to model walking with Christ...
-It should be evident to your people that you are a man of prayer....pray for them…pray in front of them…pray when they ask…pray when they dont...
-You shoudl model multiple spiritual disciplines for your people.
-You shoudl never expect your people to do what you do not do and model for them...
-Evangelism…prayer…Bible study…fasting…love…service…worship...
-We are to model these things as pastors.
To the young pastors Timothy Paul said...
12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
Philipians
To the church in Philipi Paul said
9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
Philipians
The is why Peter tells us
2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.
