Have you heard the one about the lawyer and the preacher?

1. Love to Live,

Luke 10:25–29 ESV
25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.” 29 But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
Matthew 22:38 ESV
38 This is the great and first commandment.
Matthew 22:36–38 ESV
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment.

The question is: What must I do to inherit eternal life?

Luke emphasizes the question by repetition:
;
Acts 2:37 ESV
37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
Acts 16:30 ESV
30 Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
The answer is:
;
Acts 2:38 ESV
38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Luke 18:22 ESV
22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”
Love requires obedient response to the grace gift of eternal life.

What are the components of love?

Galatians 5:6 ESV
6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.

It also shows faith without action is impossible,

James 2:17 ESV
17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
Love with all your heart — emotions
Love with all your soul — spirit
Love with all your strength — body
Love with all your mind — intellect

You know you might be from the backwoods of Kentucky if:

You ever cut your grass and found a car.
You own a home that is mobile and 5 cars that aren't.
You think the stock market has a fence around it.
Your stereo speakers used to belong to the Drive-in Theater.
You own a homemade fur coat.
You burn your yard rather than mow it.

You know you might have a problem with Jesus when ...

1. Try to test Jesus instead of learning from Him (v. 25).
2. Have a legalistic view of salvation (v. 25).
3. Ask questions you already know the answer to (v. 26–27).
4. Have trouble making your walk the same as your talk (v. 28).
5. Attempt to justify yourself (v. 29).

2. Even When You Don’t Feel Like Loving,

Luke 10:30–35 ESV
30 Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’

Loving the careless,

Luke 10:30 ESV

Lit. A certain man
Jerusalem 2500 ft above sea level
Jericho 800 ft below sea level
17 miles

Loving the unloved,

Luke 10:31–32 ESV
Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
Luke 10:31–32 ESV

Luke 10:31–32 ESV
31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
Priest was seen as wise and understand. They were descendants of Aaron (sacrifices, temple maintenance, purification rites — could not defile by touch a dead body)
Levite was seen as proud and ruling — descendant of Levi (assisted the priests in sacrifices and policing the temple — but could not perform sacrificial acts)

Loving our enemies,

Luke 10:33 ESV
But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion.
Luke 10:33 ESV
But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion.
Luke 10:33 ESV
33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion.
The hero was the hated outsider.
Love does not consider nationality, race, religion, or educational status.
Judea became the place of the Jews.
Samaria was the Northern Kingdom. They fell to Assyria in 722 B.C. The Assyrians brought non-Jews into Samaria. These intermarried with the Israelites who then were seen as rebels. They even built their own temple are they were not permitted to help rebuild the one in Jerusalem (). They built their own on Mt. Gerizim. The Jews, under Hyrcanus destroyed it in 128 BC.

Loving the disgusting,

Luke 10:34 ESV
He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him.
Luke 10:34 ESV

Luke 10:34 ESV
34 He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him.
Would you be expected to tend to someone, so badly injured, just looking at him turns your stomach?
Everything he had. Where did he get material to bind the wounds?
Oil
Wine
Donkey
Money
Would you be expected to tend to someone, so badly injured, just looking at him turns your stomach?

Loving those who cost,

Luke 10:34–35 ESV
He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’

What does he use to tend to this injured man? Here is our example.
Everything he had. Where did he get material to bind the wounds?
Oil
Wine
Donkey
Money (2 days wages), expecting nothing in return.

This shows faith without love is inconceivable,

Galatians 5:6 ESV
6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.

It also shows faith without action is impossible,

James 2:17 ESV
17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

3. Because Love is a Command,

Luke 10:36–37 ESV
36 Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” 37 He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”
Worry less about who is our neighbor than about being a good neighbor.
Did Lawyer get the message? Note how he avoids the natural answer — my neighbor is the Samaritan.
