Unity Sermon Series
Scripture: (i.e., 2);
Introduction:
Unity is a challenging subject.
Growing up, I thought unity was just one thing but looking in Scripture we learn there are two kinds of unity: unity in the Spirit ( in verse 1) and unity in the Faith (in verse 3).
Anytime God’s people come together there is a form of unity that takes place but can also be better/perfected.
Jesus understood unity in the Spirit and in the faith.
Understanding Jesus by His prayer life. is Jesus’ prayer for the believers
is Jesus’ prayer for the believers

Experience perfect unity/be perfected or complete in unity
the glory shared is the cross
Body:
Read
says to be diligent or be eager or make every effort = take this seriously; watch this closely
V3 says to be diligent or be eager or make every effort = take this seriously; watch this closely
to be diligent or be eager or make every effort = take this seriously; watch this closely
How do we preserve unity in the Spirit is found in verse 2 primarily
Now look at verse 1:
V1 says to walk in the manner you have been called (walking worthy in verse 1 is what is practiced in verse 2)
says to walk in the manner you have been called (walking worthy in verse 1 is what is practiced in verse 2)
Being diligent in the Spirit verse 3 is living verse 2
I always believed unity in the body of Christ is primarily based on doctrine/what we believe.
While that is true, Paul focuses on how we live (attitude) first then on what we believe.
Why start with attitude?
Dedicated to the correct doctrine/teaching can also mean someone can be arrogant/unkind and not show patience, tolerance, love and humility.
Attitudes are very important!
God gives grace to the HUMBLE!
Doctrine is mentioned later in the chapter in
Ephesians 4:5
Words to focus on re: attitude in verse 2:
Humility
humility (all)/lowliness
Made of two words:
First means low to the ground
Second means mind; your mind
-it’s not something you do but believe inside about yourself (sometimes translated humility of mind)
Used 7 times in scripture:
tells the Ephesian leaders what Christ said in verse 35 (give)
tells the Ephesian leaders what Christ said in verse 35 (give)
wasn’t afraid to cry or being embarrassed because I wasn’t thinking about me
I did not shrink (vv 20, 27)

Colossians 2:23; 3:12: certain characteristics can be taken too far and become sinful

certain characteristics can be taken too far and become sinful; warning against too much humility:

Gentleness

to receive the Word in gentleness

instead of saying “that sermon was perfect for someone who isn’t here or for someone else”
it is for me and not you.
Look at
Look at
who is wise and understanding among you?
Someone answer.
We should be answering with someone else rather than saying ourselves.
Look at

show your deeds: in their wisdom were they kind?
Mean?
Harsh?
Beating you down?
True wisdom is packaged in kindness.
Patience
patience/longsuffering
First part of word means long or big
Second part means anger
Anger is the destination but it takes a long time to get there.
Moms can go hours and hours until they get angry.
Think of anger as a destination rather than a reaction.
Showing tolerance
Showing tolerance/forebearing/ accepting/making allowance for
Our culture has stolen this word and redefined it.
Culture says that you need to agree with me when actually tolerance means you disagree.
Jesus goes up the mountain and is transfigured
Jesus goes up the mountain and is transfigured
He comes down from the mountain and meets a man with a troubled son.
The disciples couldn’t help the man.
Verse 17 if Jesus saying how long do I have to tolerate you?
Jesus doesn’t give up but forbear with others a little longer
we are to tolerate others in the Body forever
putting up with people and getting frustrated when it may be justified or not
