We have limited understanding in this life. Solomon had a solution. It's called trust. When we trust in God He will give us direction.

Discovering God’s Direction

A. Life’s greatest goal is God.
1. Finding God’s will and doing it is our purpose.
2. How can we find the will of God and do it?
B. Solomon had a four-word solution
1. Note the four words: trust; lean not; acknowledge
2. These four words lead to the center of God’s will.
Proverbs 3:5–6 NKJV
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;
1. Trust launches a personal relationship with God.
a. To trust is to believe; it is to have faith.
b. That was Paul’s answer to the Philippian jailor. ()
Acts 16:31 NKJV
31 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
2. Salvation is by faith alone. ()
Romans 5:1 NKJV
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
a. Grace makes this possible ()
Ephesians 2:8–9 NKJV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
b. Faith brings everlasting life starting immediately (
jn 3.36
John 3:36 NKJV
36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

“Lean not on your own understanding”

Proverbs 3:5 NKJV
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;
Ephesians 3:5 NKJV
5 which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets:
1. “Those who know themselves, find their own understanding a broken reed, which, if they lean upon, will fail? (Matthew Henry)
2. Our understanding of all things is limited to our intelligence or experience.
3. God’s understanding is far above that of all people. ()
Isaiah 55:8–9 NKJV
8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. 9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.
4. We discover the wisdom of God in the Scriptures.
a. The Scriptures made David wiser than his teachers ()
Psalm 119:99 NKJV
99 I have more understanding than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation.
b. We find God’s will through Bible Study and prayer.
5. “No step well prayed over will bring ultimate regret” (Charles Bridges)

“In all your ways acknowledge Him”

Proverbs 3:6 NKJV
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
1. To acknowledge the Lord in all things is full surrender to Him.
1. To acknowledge the Lord in all things is full surrender to Him.
2. Acknowledge the Lord in every thought and word.
3. Acknowledge the Lord on the job and at home.
4. Acknowledge the Lord when days are dark or bright.
5. Acknowledge the Lord on the expressway and in our expressions.
6. Acknowledge the Lord when with saints or sinners.
Conclusion:
A. God’s direction doesn’t guarantee perfection.
1. “God’s promise for guidance doesn’t make us infallible; our very errors will be overruled to produce greater humility” (Charles Bridges)
2. We are but sinners saved by grace, yet led by God from place to place.
B. It is a privilege to get in on God’s plan.
1. Have you begun by faith that brings salvation.
2. Have you decided to trust God totally for direction?
3. Have your surrendered completely to the Father’s will?
C. The direction of the Lord will bring purpose and joy.
