Have you ever wondered what happens after death?
I was too young to remember when my parents died, but I remember when my grandmother died.
In fact, I was the one who answered the call from the hospital with the news.
Needless to say, it was quite a shock.
We had gone out to dinner, then she asked to go back to the house because she wasn’t feeling well.
Later that evening my grandfather took her to the hospital.
She passed away very early the next morning.
We don’t have a lot of information about what happens after death, but there are some things we know.
There is life after death.
The teachings of Jesus Christ, and His own resurrection are proof of that.
Paul tells us a bit more in today’s Scripture reading:
Paul had started the church in Thessalonica, and taught them about the Second Coming of Christ.
Apparently some of the believers in Thessalonica had died since then, and the others wanted to know if they would miss out at Christ’s return.
Paul writes these words to reassure them about believers who had died.
Not be ignorant about those who die – neither should we be ignorant
Do not grieve like those who have no hope
Death in pagan antiquity was understood as final and complete
Hope - looking forward to in confident expectation
Paul’s hope was that when he died he would go to be with the Lord
Philippians 1:23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;
Still grieve, however – for our own loss.
Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus
We have hope, looking forward to in confident expectation of life beyond this one, eternal life, the glorious riches of our inheritance.
Those who die in the Lord go to a far better place – no more sorrow or suffering.
According to the Lord’s own word
Jesus died and rose – the foundation of our faith, the basis of our hope
Jesus has faced death and conquered it, going ahead of us.
A believer who was seriously ill and lacked assurance of salvation said to his physician who had come on a house call, "Doctor, although I'm a Christian, I'm afraid to die.
Exactly what happens to us in the hour of death?"
The surgeon, who was also a believer, thought for a moment and then replied, "I'm afraid I can't give you an exact answer to that question!"
As he walked across the room to leave, he desperately wished he could say something comforting.
Pausing briefly before opening the door, he heard the sound of scratching and whining on the other side.
Suddenly he realized that he had left his car window open and his little dog had jumped out.
With the patient's permission he let in his pet poodle who leaped on him with an eager show of gladness.
In a flash the doctor's mind was awakened to a scriptural truth he had never before put into words.
Turning to the sick man, he said, "Did you see how my dog acted?
He's never been in this room before.
He had no idea what was inside; yet when I opened the door, he sprang in without fear, for he knew his master was here!
As Christians we have not been told about the glories that await us on the other side of death.
But one thing we do know; our Master is there, and that is enough!
Jesus has prepared a place for us
Those who are in Christ – those who are in Christ while alive remain in Christ even after the body dies.
Dead in Christ will rise – our own resurrection at Christ’s Second Coming
Those alive will be caught up with them – reunited with loved ones
Be with the Lord forever
Encourage each other
When Kendra went away to college it was sad.
We would miss her.
But it was also a joy because it meant a new part of her life, new experiences.
We also knew it would be temporary, that we would see her again.
It is like that when someone dies.
