47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.

I. COME TO JESUS AND STICK WITH HIM

Review at end of Sermon on Plain: Concentric Circles of Crowds
48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.
12 Apostles Jesus chose right before
Crowd of disciples
Great Multitude from Judea, Jerusalem, seacoast of Tyre & Sidon
Ends message w/ urgency of transformation & not just walking away the same way you came
Tough times reveal what is in the heart
*Reason I came to Jesus > Girls at YoungLife
Then heard stories of Zaccaeus, lame man lowered from roof, woman caught in adultery, Jesus dying on cross
Gospel message at camp > Chose to follow Jesus & friends did not
Enemy tried to get me to leave Jesus > WOULD NOT DO IT
Trials of faith, persecution, health problems, financial worries
*Sponge in kitchen sink—Squeezing reveals junk inside > REVEALING & SANCTIFYING
John 6:66–69 ESV
After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”

Job 1:12 ESV
And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand.” So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.
Job 1:21–22 ESV
And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.

Be like the blessed believer:
Psalm 1:1–6 ESV
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
“Though he slay me, I will hope in him” .
Though he slay me, I will hope in him
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton: Standard Bible Society, 2016), .
He sticks with you:
James 4:8 ESV
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Outward PROFESSION is not as importance as OBEDIENCE Quiet, humble, obedient believer looks to HIM for reward:
ESVFor am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.
*Ever do anything for God that only He knows? (Giving, prayer, fasting mentioned by Jesus in )
ESV“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
Opinions of others is a flood that tests the heart of God’s childSo are other trials of lifeIf don’t obey in little things, how will you obey in difficult things? The Test Will Come: The great architect Frank Lloyd Wright was given the challenge of building the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, one of the most earthquake-prone cities in the world. Wright's investigation showed that a solid foundation could be "floated" on a sixty-foot layer of soft mud underlying the hotel, which would provide a shockabsorbing but solid support for the immense building. Shortly after the hotel was completed it withstood the worst earthquake in fifty-two years, while lesser buildings fell in ruins around it.—Today in the Word, March, 7989, p. 6 Rock climbing: pushing self away from the rock is quite unnatural, but the only way to get tractionSo is obeying Jesus in the little things now UNNATURALBut it is what gives us traction!

2 Timothy 4:16–17 ESV
At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth.
Galatians 1:10 ESV

II. HEAR WHAT HE SAYS AND TAKE IT TO HEART

Context was what he taught in Sermon on Plain
Beatitudes
Woes
Loving Enemies
Being like Heavenly Father
Be Merciful, judge not, condemn not, give, & forgive
How to help brother in sin—Humbly admit own sin & empathetically take speck out of their eye
Treasure of heart will produce fruit & words
Don’t just say, “Lord, Lord” > Do what He says!
We are nourished & strengthened w/ Word of God
Deuteronomy 8:3 ESV
And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
Who do you look to for wisdom & counsel?
Deuteronomy 8:3 ESV
And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
Deuteronomy 8:4 ESV
Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did not swell these forty years.
Who do you look to for wisdom & counsel?
James 1:5–8 ESV
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
James 1:55-8
After God gives wisdom about their situation, doubt asks, “Does anyone else have any other ideas?”
Faith in His Word
Psalm 130:5–6 ESV
I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.
Value His Word & Meditate on it
Joshua 1:8–9 ESV
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Hear, Read, Meditate, Study, Memorize
He sticks with you:
2 Timothy 4:16–17 ESV
At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth.
Hebrews 13:5 ESV
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Hebrews 13.
Invest time in the Word of God
Instead of Netflix binge > Binge on Word of God
Hear, Read, Meditate, Study, Memorize

III. DO WHAT JESUS SAYS IN EVERY SEASON AND SITUATION OF LIFE

Outward PROFESSION is not as importance as OBEDIENCE
H
Obey—
*Marriage counseling that ends in destruction
Not doing what you know you should do
Not only Hearers, but DOERS also!
James 1:22–25 ESV
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
*Seeing bugger in nose & walking away forgetting about it!
Big deception:
1) Escape obedience today without consequence
Live by, “God will forgive me
2) Don’t worry about the storm tomorrow
Want knowledge w/ out transformation
Galatians 6:7 ESV
Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.
Escape obedience today
Rather, live by, “I love God so I will do...”
Live by, “God will forgive me”
Expect to survive storm tomorrow
Rather, live by, “I love God so I will do...”
Live in preparation to see Jesus
Partaking in God’s best: 1) Provision 2) Protection
Often think of nourishment from WORD
Also nourished by OBEDIENCE!
Disciples went into town to buy food & Jesus kept doing ministry
Woman at the well > She runs back tells town
Crowd COMING to Him > Continuing to do ministry w/ out eating
John 4:31–34 ESV
Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.
John 4
*Ever do anything for God that only He knows?
Giving, prayer, fasting mentioned by Jesus in
Matthew 6:5 ESV
“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
Opinions of others is a FLOOD that tests the OBEDIENCE of God’s child
So are other trials of life
If don’t obey in little things, how will you obey in difficult things?
Quiet, humble, obedient believer looks to HIM for reward:
Galatians 1:10 ESV
For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Treasure of heart will produce fruit & words
Removing teaching: Beatitudes, Woes, Loving Enemies, Being like Heavenly Father, Be Merciful, judge not, condemn not, give, & forgive, lend freely, Humility, treasures of heart, SPEECH > Matthew’s Record: Anger, Lust, divorce, oaths, giving to needy, prayer, fasting, generosity, not worrying, asking, seeking, knocking and trusting Father to answer your prayer
Matthew’s Record: Anger, Lust,
Don’t just say, “Lord, Lord” > Do what He says!
Pictures 7-9 > Enemy cheering you on to remove more & live on edge
Enemy lies > Compromise > Weaker
God speaks > Obey > Stronger

Come to me all who are weary & heavy laden
Revelation 3:20 ESV
Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

IV. STORMS REVEAL WHAT’S BENEATH THE SURFACE

Come, Hear, Obey
Be faithful where God has you
He gives us the grace we need for each situation
Instead of comforting afflicted, God challenges comfortable
God’s servants don’t live by explanations; they live by promises.”—Warren Wiersbe
