Jesus’ Promises the Holy Spirit

​ ESV26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

in Jesus’ absence the HS would take his placev.16 - “another Helper, to be with you forever”“in my name” = all the qualities and attributes of the Lord Jesus will be present in the HS The Ministry of the HS1. “he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance”

​ ESV13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

just as Jesus listened to his Father and spoke only his words so too the HS who lives within every believerhelps us understand how to interpret the scriptures believers possess a wisdom that is not of this world (6)the Spirit knows the thoughts of God and imparts them to us (11)purpose of knowledge: that we might understand what God has given us (12)

​ ESV27 But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.

according to v.20 this anointing results in the believer having all knowledgedoesn’t mean they know everything but the one who does!if you have the HS who knows and understand the thoughts of God, you possess all knowledgethe key is unlocking through faithful, submissive study of the Word of Godbe filled with the Spirit by letting the word dwell richly in you 2. “he will … bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you”the primary application was to the disciples who had been taught by Jesusmuch of what he taught them they did not fully comprehendthe HS brought back to their minds Jesus’ teaching as it was neededmy experience of the HS bringing to mind verses that I have learned but are no longer top of mindbecause it is hidden in my heart, sometimes where even I cannot find it, the HS brings it to mindexample of disciples giving testimony before authorities

​ ESV11 And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

- “the spirit of your Father speaking through you”we witnessed this in our study in the book of Acts when Peter and John were hauled before the Sanhedrin and they boldly preached to them even though they had unjustly murdered Jesus for speaking the truth to them

2. Jesus Promises Peace

​ ESV27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

“peace I leave with you”Jesus was about to leave them for a timethey would see him in 3 days and then for 40 days until he ascended to the right hand of God where he sat downJesus promised them “another helper” in his place who would come to them and live within them forever
