Synopsis

A willingness, zeal or longing to accomplish a task or fulfil an ambition.

Eagerness to perform a task

;

(ESV) — 8 From the Gadites there went over to David at the stronghold in the wilderness mighty and experienced warriors, expert with shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions and who were swift as gazelles upon the mountains:

(ESV) — 20 After him Baruch the son of Zabbai repaired another section from the buttress to the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest.

(ESV) — 8 Be it known to the king that we went to the province of Judah, to the house of the great God. It is being built with huge stones, and timber is laid in the walls. This work goes on diligently and prospers in their hands.

(ESV) — 13 She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands.

(ESV) — 16 For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus, so that he might not have to spend time in Asia, for he was hastening to be at Jerusalem, if possible, on the day of Pentecost.

(ESV) — 17 But since we were torn away from you, brothers, for a short time, in person not in heart, we endeavored the more eagerly and with great desire to see you face to face,

Eagerness to fulfil personal ambitions

(ESV) — 7 I said, ‘Surely you will fear me; you will accept correction. Then your dwelling would not be cut off according to all that I have appointed against you.’ But all the more they were eager to make all their deeds corrupt.

(ESV) — 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

(ESV) — 6 They stir up strife, they lurk; they watch my steps, as they have waited for my life.

(ESV) — 11 If they say, “Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood; let us ambush the innocent without reason; 12 like Sheol let us swallow them alive, and whole, like those who go down to the pit;

(ESV) — 20 A faithful man will abound with blessings, but whoever hastens to be rich will not go unpunished.

(ESV) — 25 And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”

(ESV) — 17 They make much of you, but for no good purpose. They want to shut you out, that you may make much of them. 18 It is always good to be made much of for a good purpose, and not only when I am present with you,

(ESV) — 6 as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless.

Eagerness for personal godliness

(ESV) — 15 And all Judah rejoiced over the oath, for they had sworn with all their heart and had sought him with their whole desire, and he was found by them, and the Lord gave them rest all around.

(ESV) — 10 Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.

(ESV) — 9 “And you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father and serve him with a whole heart and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever.

(ESV) — 4 One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.

(ESV) — 1 As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?

(ESV) — 1 O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

(ESV) — 17 Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the fear of the Lord all the day.

(ESV) — 7 to which our twelve tribes hope to attain, as they earnestly worship night and day. And for this hope I am accused by Jews, O king!

(ESV) — 1 Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.

(ESV) — 11 For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter.

(ESV) — 11 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.

(ESV) — 11 And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end,

(ESV) — 2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—

(ESV) — 5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge,

Spiritual eagerness may be superficial and unreal

(ESV) — 2 Yet they seek me daily and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that did righteousness and did not forsake the judgment of their God; they ask of me righteous judgments; they delight to draw near to God.

(ESV) — 34 When he killed them, they sought him; they repented and sought God earnestly. 35 They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their redeemer. 36 But they flattered him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues. 37 Their heart was not steadfast toward him; they were not faithful to his covenant.

(ESV) — 1 Hear this, O house of Jacob, who are called by the name of Israel, and who came from the waters of Judah, who swear by the name of the Lord and confess the God of Israel, but not in truth or right.

Believers should be eager to follow and serve their Lord

Eager to do good works

(ESV) — 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

(ESV) — 7 But as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you—see that you excel in this act of grace also.

(ESV) — 22 And with them we are sending our brother whom we have often tested and found earnest in many matters, but who is now more earnest than ever because of his great confidence in you.

(ESV) — 1 Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work,

(ESV) — 8 The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people.

(ESV) — 14 And let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful.

(ESV) — 13 Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good?

Eager to serve

(ESV) — 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.

(ESV) — 2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly;

(ESV) — 3 Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours.

(ESV) — 8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

(ESV) — 12 So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.

(ESV) — 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

(ESV) — 8 The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people.

Eager to share the truth

(ESV) — 15 So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.

(ESV) — 15 And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.

(ESV) — 25 He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John.

Eager to receive or understand the truth

(ESV) — 37 David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?” And the great throng heard him gladly.

(ESV) — 33 So I sent for you at once, and you have been kind enough to come. Now therefore we are all here in the presence of God to hear all that you have been commanded by the Lord.”

(ESV) — 11 Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

(ESV) — 15 Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress.

Eager to give

(ESV) — 7 But as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you—see that you excel in this act of grace also.

(ESV) — 21 And they came, everyone whose heart stirred him, and everyone whose spirit moved him, and brought the Lord’s contribution to be used for the tent of meeting, and for all its service, and for the holy garments. 22 So they came, both men and women. All who were of a willing heart brought brooches and earrings and signet rings and armlets, all sorts of gold objects, every man dedicating an offering of gold to the Lord.

(ESV) — 9 Then the people rejoiced because they had given willingly, for with a whole heart they had offered freely to the Lord. David the king also rejoiced greatly.

(ESV) — 11 So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have.

(ESV) — 19 And not only that, but he has been appointed by the churches to travel with us as we carry out this act of grace that is being ministered by us, for the glory of the Lord himself and to show our good will.

(ESV) — 10 Only, they asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.

(ESV) — 18 They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share,

Eager to pray

(ESV) — 2 Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.

Eager for God’s honour

(ESV) — 11 “Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the people of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the people of Israel in my jealousy.

(ESV) — 14 He said, “I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.”

(ESV) — 16 And he said, “Come with me, and see my zeal for the Lord.” So he had him ride in his chariot.

(ESV) — 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

Eager to see Jesus Christ’s return and the end of the world

(ESV) — 7 so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ,

(ESV) — 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God.

(ESV) — 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

(ESV) — 5 For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness.
