The New Generation

the next generation was coming
life has been good
About 30 years since Joshua’s death
settled down in the land of plenty
Me generation every one doing what was right- own eyes
people have stopped waring
Assimilated into society with the enemy
you got your thing, we have ours, lets meet in the middle

Prove / Trial / Temptation

Going to war
Satanic groups were still in the land
they needed to be expelled/ destroyed
There is no standing still in the Christian life there are battles to be fought
God left them so they could learn war / Trust in the commander
Genesis 22:1 AV
And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
Abraham trusted so much that he was willing to kill ...
Knew the promise,
knew Gods power,
knew Gods love

Exodus 16:4 AV
Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.
God wants total obedience
so tests are given
Psalm 95:9 AV
When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work.
Trials and tests are given to trust God, and prove that He is Good
trials were given to see if they were going to obey

They Did Not Obey

They took a “good neighbor policy”
why don’t we just get along
in order to keep peace between the 2 religions a compromise had to be made
V5 they integrated with them in society
they were no longer separated
they were no longer blessed
intermarried
served baalim / asherahas
samuramis
So discipline is needed
V8 Chushan invaded and took them captive
Who is the one doing the orchestrating?

Acts 4:24–28 AV
And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is: Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.
Be Available 1. Othniel: The Power of God (Jdg. 3:1–11)

Poet T.S. Eliot said, “Destiny waits in the hand of God, not in the hands of statesmen.”

Psalm 22:27–28 AV
All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. For the kingdom is the LORD’S: and he is the governor among the nations.
Daniel 4:25 AV
That they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and they shall wet thee with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.

The Battle was brought to them

now they have no choice
being oppressed by the good neighbor
Be Available 1. Othniel: The Power of God (Jdg. 3:1–11)

Charles Spurgeon said that God never allows His people to sin successfully. Their sin will either destroy them or it will invite the chastening hand of God. If the history of Israel teaches the contemporary church anything it’s the obvious lesson that “righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people”

The story is told of an old man who was traveling on an ocean liner, when a huge storm blew up without warning. One woman lost her balance and fell overboard. People stood frozen with horror. Suddenly, a man plunged into the waves, grabbed her, and held her until a rescue boat came. When they were pulled out, everyone was astonished and embarrassed to discover that the hero was the oldest man on the boat—a man in his eighties. That evening they held a party to honor him. When they called on him to make a speech, the old man rose slowly. He looked around at the people, then said, "I would like to know just one thing." There was an embarrassed silence. "Who pushed me?" Sometimes that is the only way we start moving. The Lord will keep pushing us out of our complacency, out of the second-generation syndrome, into a fresh, vital experience of walking with the Lord Jesus. Are you already moving, or do you need a push?
Chushan = double wicked
took them captive
V9 cried out to the Lord
not in repentance but in their misery
God gave them a deliverer who brought them out of their slavery
