Ephesians 4:20-
But that is not the way you learned Christ!— assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
Intentional living, put off, renew, put on. The Spirit.
Created to be like God, not omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, but in love, mercy, grace, to be like Christ, right with God (righteous) and holy (set apart for His good purposes).
Ephesians 5:
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,
Bookends, to be renewed by the Holy Spirit and to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
the Holy Spirit makes us new, not our old not right with God, sinful selfish person but a new creation in Christ to be like Christ. He renews our minds so we think, feel, see, and act like Jesus, and also the Holy Spirit fills us to live through us.
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Ephesians 5:1-
Imitate God in everything you do. How do we do this? How do we know what God would do? Look at Jesus
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
Colossians 1:15-
For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,
Colossians 1:1
What we want to know about God, what He is like and what He would do or say, look at Jesus.
Paul even gives us some of the “what we should do” Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. What example? He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, pleasing to God.
How does that jive with what the world is telling us? Get yours, be all you can be, look out for number 1, get to the top, he who has the most power, money, toys, etc. wins. Jesus kingdom and economy are different. So
What does that look like for us? Jesus said that the greatest in the kingdom, His kingdom is the least, is a servant. He said, for the Son of Man, came to serve and not be served, came to offer His life as a ransom for many.
Look at the 3 temptations of the enemy
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written,
“ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”
Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,
“ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’
and
“ ‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ”
Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,
“ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.’ ”
Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.
And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.
Matthew 4:1-
If you are the Son of God, question your identity and prove your worth, turn stones into bread, take care of a physical need with you divine power, change your circumstances with your own power and don’t trust God, even though He is the one who led you into the dessert.
Turn stones into bread, take care of a physical need with you divine power, change your circumstances with your own power and don’t trust God, even though He is the one who led you into the dessert.
If you are the Son of God, jump, make God now prove His love, you must be feeling lonely and neglected. We ever been there? Times are tough, God seems distant, like He’s abandoned us, we want Him to do something and prove He loves us. The only circumstance in our life that will ever matter is our sinful separation from God, and He did prove His love and do something about that.
I will give you all the kingdoms of the world if you will bow down and worship me. Jesus says beat it Satan, but this is the offer we struggle with. If it’s not offered to us by Satan, we pray it to God. Give us fortune and fame, make our life easy, give me my dreams. Jesus says you must worship only the Lord your God and serve Him.
You see, if we desire worldly things more than we desire God, we are worshipping those and not God. Worship means to ascribe worth to something. What do you worship? Yourself, baseball, money, sex, power, what is it? We were designed to worship and if we are not worshipping the creator God, we will be worshipping made by God, that is idolatry and it’s the 1 commandment.
But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.
Ephesians 5:3-
Again we see, if we love God then these don’t will take care of themselves. But if we love something more than we love God, we will struggle in this life and struggle with these things on this list. We will only have a heart of thankfulness when we are constantly aware of what we’ve been saved from and why, because of God’s great love.
Ephesians 5:6-
Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true),
You see, here again Paul writes to us, you are not who you used to be, you were brought out from that old life and made new for this better life of knowing and serving God
Ephesians 5:
Identity, our acceptance, significance and security, greatest needs at the soul level, all met by Christ on the cross.
Accepted not by what we have done, but by faith in what Jesus has done for us.
Significant, because now we are a part of the family of God, the body of Christ and God has things for us to do.
Security, with the Holy Spirit within us, we are guaranteed an inheritance and heaven awaits for those who have placed their faith, trust and hope in Jesus.
