INTRODUCTION

`YOU have this same narrative in the ninth chapter of Matthew, and in the second chapter of Mark. What is three times recorded by inspired pens must be regarded as trebly important, and well worthy of our earnest consideration. Observe the instructive fact, that our Saviour retired and spent a special time in prayer when he saw unusual crowds assembling.

He withdrew into the wilderness to hold communion with his Father, and, as a consequence, to come forth clothed with an abundance of healing and saving power. Not but that in himself as God he always had that power without measure; but for our sakes he did it, that we might learn that the power of God will only rest upon us in proportion as we draw near to God.

Neglected prayer leads to lack of spiritual strength

Verse 17

Luke 5:17 NKJV
Now it happened on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal them.
And the power of the Lord was present for him to heal the sick. This comment clearly reveals Luke’s theological emphasis of the Spirit’s coming upon Jesus (cf. ; , , , ). It prepares the reader for the miracle of healing that is to follow. The term “Lord” here refers to God/YHWH as in , , , , . The Spirit and “power” are intimately connected in Luke (see comments on ). Power is associated with healing in ; ; ; ; ; .
"...He was teaching...." Jesus was teaching crowds of people but in the midst of those people were haters called Pharisees and Scribes; looking to trip Him up.
By the way, He was teaching others what He Himself already knew, - that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow...
. Ἰουδαία Ioudaía; gen. Ioudaías, fem. proper noun. Judea. The province of Judea, a name applied to that part of Canaan occupied by those who returned after the Assyrian and Babylonian captivities.

Teaching 3 Types of People that still exist today:

. Ἱερουσαλήμ Hierousalḗm; fem. noun transliterated from the Hebr. Yerūshālēm (), dwelling of peace. Jerusalem (; , , , ; ; ; ; , , ; ; , ; ; ; , ; ; , , , , ; , , ; , ; ; , ; ; ; , , , , ; ; ; , ; , ; ; , ; , ; ; ; ; , , ; ; ; ; ; , ). Metaphorically, for the Jewish state as spoken of the former or Mosaic dispensation in as the “now” or present Jerusalem, and of the later Christian dispensation, the Redeemer’s kingdom of which the spiritual Jerusalem is the seat. In , it is called the upper Jerusalem; in the heavenly Jerusalem; in ; the kainḗ (), new Jerusalem. See Hierosóluma (), Jerusalem.
1. Those running in circles day after day - Galilee - means circle - these people were tired of running around in circles, doing the same thing over and over and expecting to get a different result
2. Those bound up by sin and strongholds - Judea - represented by those that were in captivity - these people spiritually were in captivity; they were bound until the Words of Life shined the light of Jesus in their hearts
3. Those who act like they have peace but don’t have real peace - Jerusalem - dwelling of peace - the town might be named dwelling of peace but real peace only comes when the Prince of Peace steps into the midst
To Heal -
to restore someone to health after a physical illness
to deliver beyond physical maladies - to restore - "I once was lost but now I'm found was blind but now I see"
to cure - [illustration - Gilead cured HepC. 12 wks and its gone forever] - God cures forever and ever
[POINT] "...SITTING BY.." THE PHARISEES WERE NOT SITTING AT JESUS' FEET OR SITTING BEFORE JESUS BUT WERE JUST SITTING BY AS CRITICAL OBSERVERS; NOT REALLY IN THE SERVICE BUT JUST WATCHING THE SERVICE.
YOUR POSITION WILL DETERMINE YOUR POSSESSION - IF YOU POSITION YOURSELF AT JESUS' FEET THEN YOU CAN POSSESS EVERY PROMISE PROMISED.
THOUGHT 1:
(1) There are always those who just sit by, who are just spectators, never really listening or learning, never becoming involved.
(2) There are always those who are critical, who set themselves up as knowing best, who are censors and judges of what the preacher or teacher does. They listen and watch to make sure nothing is too different. If it is, they begin to criticize and judge.
(3) The preacher or teacher must continue on in his call and ministry. “To his own Master he standeth or falleth” ().

LOVE

God Honors Our Witness

Luke 5:18 NKJV
Then behold, men brought on a bed a man who was paralyzed, whom they sought to bring in and lay before Him.
Finally, the text shows the importance of faith. It is the faith of those who bring the paralytic to Jesus that is highlighted. This detail seems to indicate that God honors us as we seek to lead others to the Lord.
Paralyzed - when you're feeling paralyzed in life there's no better place to go than in the midst of Jesus
Real Friends -
real friends will be there for you when you're paralyzed and hurting.
Real friends won't make fun of you
abandon you
say its all your fault
Real Godly friends will bring you to the One who is able to bring you out of that paralyzed state - Jesus Christ Son of the Living God

CONVICTION

Going Higher

Luke 5:19 NKJV
And when they could not find how they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the housetop and let him down with his bed through the tiling into the midst before Jesus.
"...they went up..." - on the ground was little too crowded so they had to go higher to get to Jesus. We have to sometimes step out of the crowd and go a little bit higher too.
"...with his bed..." - they didn't get him all dressed up or try to make him something other than what he was; a broken and pralyzed man. But guess what? Jesus met him there right where he was. Jesus is not looking for us to be perfect but He came to seek and to save them that are lost.

IN OUR OWN LIVES, OUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS WILL VERY LIKELY NOT KNOW THE HEALING TOUCH OF CHRIST UNLESS WE HAVE THE KIND OF LOVE THAT RIPS OPEN ROOFS, SO TO SPEAK. IF WE TRULY LOVE THOSE AROUND US, WE WILL PRAY REGULARLY AND FERVENTLY FOR THEIR SALVATION. WE WILL RISK BEING JUDGED AS FOOLS IN OUR EFFORTS TO WIN THEM TO CHRIST. IF WE ARE NOT PRAYING, IF WE ARE NOT PRYING OPEN ANY ROOFS, DO WE REALLY LOVE THEM?

Going up and Digging down - the friends went up on the roof but then they had to dig down to get to Jesus:
[POINT] IF YOU ARE REALLY DESPERATE TO MEET JESUS YOU HAVE TO GO UP (IN PRAYER) BUT YOU ALSO HAVE TO GO DOWN (INTO HIS WORD)

Faith and Healing Tied Together

Luke 5:20 NKJV
When He saw their faith, He said to him, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.”
When he saw their faith Jesus often associates faith and healing (e.g., , ; ; ; ).
Luke also relates faith and forgiveness which is something that only God can do. Only God can forgive sins (). Because Jesus said the man's sins are forgiven He was blaspheming God according to the Pharisees
1. Jesus saw “their faith,” the faith of the friends as well as of the sick man. The faith of the friends had a large part in the man’s sins being forgiven. What a lesson to us, for our families and friends!
“We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves” ().
“Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ” ().
2. [POINT] The faith Jesus saw was a faith that believed and persisted against all kinds of obstacles, a faith that really believed and persisted. This is crucial to remember in seeking forgiveness.
“And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened” ().
“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” ().
“Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all. He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken” ().
3. Jesus Himself forgave the man’s sins. This is a critical fact to note. Jesus did not say, “Man, God forgives your sins.” He said, “Man, I forgive your sins.”
“Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins” ().
“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace” ().

God knows our every thought

Luke 5:22 NKJV
But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, He answered and said to them, “Why are you reasoning in your hearts?

FORGIVENESS (healing and forgiveness go together like peanutbutter and jelly)

FOUR STEPS ARE NECESSARY FOR ANYONE TO RECEIVE FORGIVENESS OF SIN.
FOUR STEPS ARE NECESSARY FOR ANYONE TO RECEIVE FORGIVENESS OF SIN.
a. THEY SOUGHT HELP. The man had sought the help of his friends, and they were all seeking the help of Jesus. The man was unable to help himself, to secure forgiveness and wholeness by himself. He had to have help, the help of Jesus and of friends. The same was true of all the friends of the man. They were unable to provide forgiveness and wholeness to the sick man. They, too, knew that they needed the help of Jesus and of one another.
b. THEY BELIEVED and had confidence in Jesus’ power to forgive sins and to heal. They believed that, if they came, Jesus had the power to help and that He loved and cared enough to help. Therefore, they came to Jesus. And note the inconvenience and difficulty they faced in coming. The man was bedridden. They would have to pick up his bed and carry it through the streets. Also, the crowds would be huge, perhaps making it impossible to get the bed through the throng of people. What belief! What desperation! The very kind of desperation and belief necessary to secure forgiveness and healing.
c. THEY PERSISTED despite enormous difficulty. Just as they had thought, the crowds were huge, much too large to get through to Jesus. But they did not give up. They went around to the side or back of the house and climbed up to the roof with the bed of the man. They removed some of the roof and used ropes to lower the man’s bed below, right before the feet of Jesus. Of course sitting there, Jesus observed the whole scene, as surprised as everyone else that men would be so bold and persistent. But as with any of us, the spirit of their bold persistence and the reason for such a spirit made all the difference in the world. They were desperate; their need was great and they were helpless without Jesus’ help. Such a spirit touched the Lord’s heart and still touches His heart today.
d. THEY SOUGHT FORGIVENESS

Total Healing

Luke 5:24 NKJV
But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the man who was paralyzed, “I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.”
The Gospel according to Luke (King James Version) E. Jesus Proves His Amazing Power to Forgive Sins, 5:17–26

b. His claim proved His deity. He is God, the Son of Man (see DEEPER STUDY # 3—Mt. 8:20). He was not afraid to put Himself to the test. He wanted all men to know and believe. Therefore, that “ye may know that [I] the Son of Man hath power upon earth to forgive sins,” I purpose to prove My power in the lives of those who seek forgiveness.

“Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee” (Jn. 9:35–37).

“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world” (Jn. 11:25–27).

“And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God” (Jn. 1:34).

c. His power proved His deity. Dramatically, Jesus spoke the Word, and the man arose. He was healed immediately. How? By the Word of the Lord. God’s Word proved itself. When Jesus spoke the Word of healing, the man was healed; when Jesus spoke the Word of forgiveness, the man was forgiven

Jesus was not afraid to prove Himself:

John 1:1 NKJV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:1
“And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God” ().
God’s Word proved itself. When Jesus spoke the Word of healing, the man was healed; when Jesus spoke the Word of forgiveness, the man was forgiven

Jesus demonstrated 3 types of healing:
1. forgave his sins - sin healing
2. cured his paralysis
3. gave him total body strength - a. strength in his legs to get up and walk and b. strength in his back and arms to be able to pick up his bed and walk out of the house

CONCLUSION

One went home healed
Pharisees went home still paralyzed in their unbelief
All came in in need of God but one walked out giving glory
All needed the Physcian but one walked out fit while others walked out as failures
What will you do to encounter Jesus on this day?
