Kingdom Influence

Matthew 5:13–16 ESV
13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 5:13-16
As salt of the earth, kingdom disciples can use their influence to slow down the expansion of decay engulfing society due to sin.
(salt used as preservative in biblical days_
As light, kingdom disciples are to be visible, verbal followers of Jesus Christ, dispelling the darkness around us.
We are not allowed to be secret agents for Jesus.
We are authorized representatives of the kingdom..
Ephesians 1:22–23 ESV
22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
In whatever we do...
1 Peter 2:9 ESV
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Good Things vs Good Works

Good things are acts of kindness done by unbelievers, they lack kingdom authority and are not done with the sole purpose of glorifying God.
Good things are works done by
Good works are divinely authorized activities that benefit others, for which God gets the glory.

Doctors=God’s representative in medical field
Lawyer=God’s representative in the bar association
Teacher=demonstrates what God looks like when He impacts knowledge
In God instructs us to be fruitful and multiply, not just to replenish the human race, but to replicate his image through out history.
Matthew 5:13–16 ESV
13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. 14 “You are the light of the world. Deuteronomy 4:5–8 ESV
5 See, I have taught you statutes and rules, as the Lord my God commanded me, that you should do them in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. 6 Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ 7 For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? 8 And what great nation is there, that has statutes and rules so righteous as all this law that I set before you today?
Deut 4:5-8

Impacting Culture

Jeremiah 29:7 ESV
7 But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.
As a church we can impact poverty, oppression, homelessnes, illness, crime....
What causes social upheavals?
During the reign of King Asa, the nation of Judah found itself in the midst of widespread social chaos.
2 Chronicles 15:5 ESV
5 In those times there was no peace to him who went out or to him who came in, for great disturbances afflicted all the inhabitants of the lands.
2 Chron 15:5
We are experiencing similar chaos today: international conflict, internal national conflict, and individual conflict.
Chaos ensued in Judah because
2 Chronicles 15:3 ESV
3 For a long time Israel was without the true God, and without a teaching priest and without law,
2 Chronicles 5:3 ESV
3 And all the men of Israel assembled before the king at the feast that is in the seventh month.
2
They didn’t recognize the one true God
“If the visible, physical realm of social chaos and upheaval is to be corrected, the invisible, spiritual realm has to be addressed: God’s word must be proclaimed and applied.
The abscence of kingdom disciples in culture leads to social decay and disintegration. On your own time read , the story of the great cities Soddom and Gomorrah.
