Transitory Faith
John 4:46–54 ESV
So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill. When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. So Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.” The official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way. As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering. So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household. This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.
Believers should trust and obey God based on the finish works of Jesus on the Cross not because of the temporal miracles that we experience from his mercy and grace.
Big Idea
Believers should trust and obey God based on the finish works of Jesus Christ completed on the Cross not because of the temporal miracles that we experience by his Grace and Mercy.
We should come to God in the name of Christ with our problems
We are coming to share our hearts, and gain his divine perspective which provides us with assurance and peace.
The Point of the Miracle was to demonstrate the power of God (Omnipotence)
God’s can heal, deliver, and fix what ever problems exist across time and distance.
First, Believers need to be careful of becoming addicted to the need for miraculous signs or experiences to believe that God is working or exist.
“walk by faith and not by sight”.
Trusting scripture
Truth over circumstances
Doing what is right, not based on the earthly response but based on what God has commanded
You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (, ESV)
True believing faith obeys Gods word even when the natural evidence hasn’t manifested itself.
Eternal over temporal
Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.” (, ESV)
Looking for God to fix things the way that you have constructed them in your mind, based on your desires and wishes not by his will.
Spiritual Sensationalizing, putting faith in objects, things, people, and places that God have used.
Bronze Serpent
Location, church buildings, services, songs, etc.
Mature saving faith will become the means for others to believe in Christ, not in you or the methods that God may have utilized.
