Dinner Table
Dinner Table
(insert picture of family at dinner table; saved already as family dinner table)
(insert personal story around dinner table when young/raising family/now)
When you were around the table, if you were at the table, what did you talk about?
As a member of the Lord’s family, does it really matter what we talk about? Something to think about as we go through this lesson tonight.
What is your mindset?
What is your mindset?
What is your mindset, what occupies most of your thoughts? What we set our mind on matters. (Php2:5-7)
What is closest to you, what is important to you, that will be what you talk about. Maybe it is your family, your grandkids, maybe even the weather, or you may be daring and religion or politics is important to you. What is closest to you is what is going to occupy your thoughts and your mindset. Let’s look at biblical direction and biblical example
5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God,
7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.
Now there is the mind, mindset we are to have, even telling us of the example of Jesus, but I want to look at another example.
(Have everyone turn in their bibles to Psm145:1-7)
1 I will extol You, my God, O King, And I will bless Your name forever and ever. 2 Every day I will bless You, And I will praise Your name forever and ever.
3 Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised, And His greatness is unsearchable. 4 One generation shall praise Your works to another, And shall declare Your mighty acts.
5 On the glorious splendor of Your majesty And on Your wonderful works, I will meditate. 6 Men shall speak of the power of Your awesome acts, And I will tell of Your greatness.
7 They shall eagerly utter the memory of Your abundant goodness And will shout joyfully of Your righteousness.
Since this is a Bible study, let’s study this passage together.
What is the mindset of David in (vv.1-3)?
Who is David speaking to or about (v.4)?
What does David have to say about God’s works (vv.5-7)
(Below for handout not to be said)
In looking at Psm145:1-7 we can tell about David’s mindset, that impacted his words and actions. Our mindset will do the same.
David was the King, was a husband, a father, military leader. do you think he had his mind set only on God? But God was important to him and his mindset was that of God and that impacted his actions. Sometimes he struggled and acted outside of God’s will; Bathsheba, taking census of people.
What is your mindset? What are you talking about? Who are you talking to about the important things in your life? What should our mindset be?
Something to consider: Whatever you mindset is on will impact what you set your praise on too.
What is your praise set on?
What is your praise set on?
What do you set your praise on? What accomplishments, works do you praise about?
Do you praise your works, your accomplishments or Christ’s and His finished work of redemption on the cross? (Tit3:5; Eph2:8-9; Psm134:8-13)
5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,
Paul tells us Christ saved us not by our deeds but by His through the work of the Holy Spirit!
Let’s now look at another great passage, this time concerning praise (Psm145:8-13)
8 The Lord is gracious and merciful; Slow to anger and great in lovingkindness. 9 The Lord is good to all, And His mercies are over all His works.
10 All Your works shall give thanks to You, O Lord, And Your godly ones shall bless You. 11 They shall speak of the glory of Your kingdom And talk of Your power;
12 To make known to the sons of men Your mighty acts And the glory of the majesty of Your kingdom. 13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, And Your dominion endures throughout all generations.
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you regarding praise here?
spend time there developing this (go back to the slides) especially be careful when looking at (v.9) good to all, expand on what that means!
In looking at this passage we can see that our mindset will impact our praise and what our praise should be set on.
III. Mindset when we falter
III. Mindset when we falter
We just looked at what our mindset should be, how it impacts our praise, but wait, there is more we can learn from Psm145: we can’t stop there with that Psm.
14 The Lord sustains all who fall And raises up all who are bowed down. 15 The eyes of all look to You, And You give them their food in due time.
16 You open Your hand And satisfy the desire of every living thing. 17 The Lord is righteous in all His ways And kind in all His deeds.
18 The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in truth. 19 He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He will also hear their cry and will save them.
20 The Lord keeps all who love Him, But all the wicked He will destroy.
To who does the Lord sustain when they fall (v.14)?
How does He sustain them (v.15)
Whose desire does He fill and hear their cry (vv16, 18-19)?
The Lord knows we falter, knows we stumble but HE is with those who turn to Him and will be there for us.
5 Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,”
Don’t have your mindset on things you that are temporary, money and the like, know when we have our mindset on Him, our praise going to Him then He will not leave us nor forsake us. So get your mindset right (Jam4:8; 7, 6)
8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded!
Draw near to God! - your actions will follow, cleansing, purifying, getting rid of being double minded on world and heaven
Remember our mindset and submit yourself.
7 Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
Submit and resist and you will have good results
6 But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
All that comes from the greater grace that is given to the humble, the one who submits to God and draws near to. The one with the right mindset.
Let’s venture back to mindset
5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,
7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.
Are there things we need to empty ourselves of? Are there things we need to change our attitude, our mindset about?
Empty yourself of your ways; submit to God’s ways
Be willing to humble yourself so you can submit yourself and be able to draw near to God through faith.
6 Now without faith it is impossible to please him, for the one who approaches God must believe that he exists and is a rewarder of those who seek him.
For us to approach Him we must believe, but you know what, before the world was created He believed in you, had you in mind, so keep Him in mind, have the right mindset by spending time with Him, making Him a priority!
(below is time permitting only; revised and extended on 7/18/2018)
In reading the intro material in the study guide to a book entitled “God’s Love Story I came across this to wet your appetite on maybe considering a small group study.
What does the Bible do?
Convicts us of sin (Rom3:23)
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Criticizes our inner being (Heb4:12)
12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Converts the soul (Psm19:7)
7 The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
Communicates the Word of God to us (Jn3:34)
34 “For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for He gives the Spirit without measure.
Comforts our heart (Psm119:50)
50 This is my comfort in my affliction, That Your word has revived me.
Confirms our faith (Psm119:7)
7 I shall give thanks to You with uprightness of heart, When I learn Your righteous judgments.
Counsels the life (Psm119:24)
24 Your testimonies also are my delight; They are my counselors.
Cleanses the walk (Psm119:9)
9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word.
The Bible speaks of “No Other”
No other foundation
10 According to the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he builds on it.
No other hope
19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil,
No other way
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
No other Gospel
8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed!
No other power
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
no other name
12 “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”
No other cornerstone
20 always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father;
So here we have the Bible in all its entirety, and from this brief introduction to book giving a broad overview of the bible to help us grasp God’s plan for mankind, from beginning to end, in God’s own words.
39 chapters, 45 min personal study time 1 hour small group discussion if you are interested in this, let me know.
