The Task of the Servant
v.1 Listen, hear this: There is a life in the Spirit before birth, where the Lord called me.
Even before I was born, I had a special identity in the Lord.
The language is similar to that of the calling of the prophet Jeremiah (), and of the Apostle Paul ().
and note.
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

“…I set you apart,…” I consecrated you (see also ; ; ; and note).

A “prophet” literally, is “one who has been called” to be God’s spokesman (See ; and notes).
“Nations” Although Judah’s neighbors are probably the primary focus, Judah herself is not excluded.
(See , and chapters 46-51.
9 I took you from the ends of the earth,
from its farthest corners I called you.
I said, ‘You are my servant’;
I have chosen you and have not rejected you.
10 So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
and note.
43:1 But now, this is what the Lord says—
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
Note: God made the nation Israel as surely as he made the first man and woman (See and note.).
15 But when God, who set me apart from birth and called me by his grace, was pleased
16 to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not consult any man,
