Affirm Them

Intro: I want to speak with about why God gave us marriage

(FCF) Things always make more sense when you understand their intended purpose…Jesus gave us the bible to help understand the true purpose of things

(Prop) So for a few mins we’re gonna let the bible define marriage for us

Ephesians 5:15–21 ESV

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

For friendship

Know God’s will: Paul says “Look how you walk not as unwise but as wise…making best use of the time...because the days are evil…and then he goes on to say understand the will of the Lord”

Things always make more sense when you understand their intended purpose…Marriage has a purpose

To reflect Jesus - Jesus and his bride

To bless each other -

To leave behind a godly legacy

Here’s a question: why wasn’t it good for man to be alone? because we were made in God’s Image...This is remarkable because it alludes to the trinity. that God is a community within Himself (God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit)…the point is God is in community…God created Adam…so Adam has a losing for relationship as well

Here’s the Point: Friendship is something God had in mind when He created marriage…Someone who knows you…someone who you trust…a best friend

If your single and you have a longing to be in a relationship: please don’t feel guilty for that!…God designed you that way

Cultivate your friendship with your spouse - spend time with each other - prefer each other to anyone else

Many people think that concept of working hard came after the fall, but that couldn’t be further from the truth…the pre fall prototype of mankind (Adam) designed and commissioned to work towards a calling God had for him…To be a gardener…and eve to be his helper...Just in case you ladies get frustrated at that idea - understand this word “helper” is the Hebrew word “ezer negdo” which is also used to describes God’s help for the Nation of Israel…so this word carries with it the idea of God’s divine help…Husbands do you agree with that?

2 big words - Subdue and Dominion

“Subdue” = Cultivate the raw materials of the earth and make something

Just in case you ladies get frustrated at that idea - understand this word “helper” is the Hebrew word “ezer negdo” which is also used to describes God’s help for the Nation of Israel…so this word carries with it the idea of God’s divine help…Husbands do you agree with that?

“Dominion” = Rule over and direct

Point: We were placed on this earth to take it somewhere…through hard work to make it better

He calls us to Pastors…To be musicians…To be teachers…plumbers or stay at home moms…or nurses

Here we see Adams calling…

- The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.

I will make him a helper fit for him.”…that was the woman

The first marriage was centered around a kingdom centered purpose and every marriage should follow that example - The worst thing you could do for a marriage is make it all about your marriage

So what we see in Adam is a man who has purpose He knows His calling…I’m assuming God also gave him the tools fulfill His calling…It was to be the Gardener…And God gave him a helper in Eve

So here we learn a few more things about marriage:

If your marriage is the point of your marriage…you will become dissatisfied and angry your spouse

Guys - Look for a young lady that has a similar calling to yours - missions - children ministry - music

Ladies - Don’t settle for Peter Pan…Look for a Man - someone with Godly character - someone who has an idea of what God has called him to do

For togetherness

The church gets a little prudish around the topic of sex…you know who didn’t? God.

It was His idea “God formed man and Women” and He said “It’s good” Geneses 1:31

He gave the good word “Be fruitful and multiply” Geneses 1:28

But He also gave the context to enjoy sex - the covenant of marriage

Here’s the point: Your marriage is your safe place to “enjoy and explore each other in sexual intimacy”

For family

- And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply”

People usually go to one of two extremes with this one:

Camp one: hears the idea of having a family and their palms start to sweat, and they quickly want me to change the subject because it means you lose your freedom. or perhaps you are like “I have a child…Meet fido…He’s our first”

Camp two: they are way too in to having children…where you don’t know how to have a normal conversation anymore - everything is about breast milk - strollers - mops

Here’s the point: One of the reasons God gave us marriage…was so that we could leave a Godly legacy of Jesus following disciples

Sometimes this not done through child birth - adoption - somehow finding a way to build child a godly legacy

For God’s fame

- And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply”

This world multiply means more then to increase in number…but also in glory and strength…so Marriage was given not just grow in number…but to Grow God’s glory.

One of the most common ways God’s portrays himself and his affection fro us…is through the portrait of marriage

- Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. 25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her…

3. Exchange of vows and rings - May I have the rings

This is the most important part of the whole day, this is the moment you stand before all your loved ones, and most importantly the God who made and saved you and commit yourself to one another as Husband and Wife

Understand..Marriage is not a contract…It’s a covenant
