Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:
Paul and Timothy, bond-servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, including the overseers and deacons:
1. Paul is writing this while in jail.
a. He is writing to one of the Churches he started. While he and Silas we’re in jail.
2. Paul beings his letters with his name. Not at the end like someone would do today.
a. I wonder about the keeper on the prison that was saved in along with his family.
b. Paul mentions Timothy here too. The young man (pastor) who learned so much under Paul. I’m sure at one time he did a lot of task for Paul. Later Paul would write to him also.
3. Paul calls himself and Timothy servants. (Slave or bondslave)
a. He was the Lords property. He was entirely at his disposal.
b. Paul was a man whose heart and mind were enslaved to Jesus.
c. Paul tried to live the best Christian life he could. And like Jesus, he humbled himself.
“To all the saints”
Saints: Holy or separated one.
a. Paul calls himself a servant, but refers to the people of Philip as saints.
Bishops: Overseers. bishops or Elders would preside over churches.
Deacons: Servant.
2 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

This is Paul’s usual greeting in his letters.
a. We need grace and peace in our churches today.
b. Grace: Mercy, steadfast love, compassion. This is what God shows us, and what we have to show to others.
c. This is not always the case within churches. Elab
d. If there is no grace, there will not be peace.
Peace: Where there is peace, there is no hostilities.
“from God our father and from the Lord Jesus Christ”
2. Paul greeting is grace and peace imparted jointly by God the father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
a. That is heart of the gospel.
Vs 3
“I thank my God upon everyone remembrance of you”
Paul is thankful for them. And all the memories
a. Who you thankful for and why?

Paul prayed for them with persistence.
9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;

Because where he was (jail) there were somethings Paul could not do, but one he could always do, and did was prayer.
a. This is good for those who are at home, or can’t do other things.
“With joy”
5 For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;

They had stood by Paul, they had supported him. They had become partners of the gospel.
a. Paul was a man, he needed support and encouragement.
b. Knowing that they had continued with the gospel must have put a smile on Paul’s face.
