GOSPEL One Conversation
06-10-2018
Intro - welcome to Maranatha, we wanted to share with you what we are doing on Sunday Evenings with One Conversation called Can We Talk
During the first week in the Can We Talk curriculum they share the Gospel and explain the Gospel
This morning we wanted to share that with you
David Platt who is the president of IMB and John Meador president of One Conversation have come up with the Gospel Acrostic we will share today
I think it is important to note that we are moving in the direction of being a Gospel centered church
A Gospel centered church is not one where the preacher preaches the Gospel, but one where the people share the Gospel
So you and I can begin to share the Gospel and we have talked about it before but getting and understanding of what the Gospel is
GOSPEL
Ephesians 2:4–10 NASB95
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
This is where we will park for most of this morning
This scripture is the scripture used to share the Gospel acrostic
How amazing it is to start off this scripture with But God
You see the Gospel is in contrast to something
You and I are what they say dead in our own transgressions
Paul goes on to that you and I were dead to the Law because the Law in-fact points out our transgressions
See the Gospel starts before that
Often times we think the Gospel is just the saving part of it, well for it to save you, you and I need to know what it is saving us from
which means that you and I need to know that you and I are guilty of something, called sin
We have talked about sin before so I don't want to spend to much time on it other than to say that you and I are guilty of sin, you and I are dead because of sin
This brings us to the G in Gospel
G
Gods character -
Ephesians 2:4 NASB95
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,
This particular verse just touches the top of Gods character
Which is great for us when you are sharing the Gospel
You want to just touch on the fact of who God is
God loves you and I
Jeremiah 31:3 NASB95
3 The Lord appeared to him from afar, saying, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore I have drawn you with lovingkindness.
Mercy is defined by not getting what you do deserve
But God remember God is rich with mercy and extends you and I mercy because of His great love for us
This is just the beginning of Gods character and when you and i begin to share the Gospel people need to know of Gods character, because if they are going to enter into a relationship with God then this is the beginning of getting to know him
This brings us to the next letter O
O
Offense of sin -
Ephesians 2:5 NASB95
5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
remember sin causes us death
Praise the Lord God is rich with mercy because of His love
It is because of God’s love for you and I that He saves us which we do not deserve to be saved because of Sin
Romans 5:12 NASB95
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—
Sin extended to everyone, everyone one of us are sinners
Without the knowledge of sin there is no need for a savior, and without the knowledge of sin there is no understanding that you need a savior
While you and I are in sin, if we are never confronted with our sin then we never relaize that we need a savior
so because of the sin in our life it brings us to the need of a savior
Which brings us to the next letter S
S
Sufficiency of Christ -
Ephesians 2:5–6 NASB95
5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
I hope you can see how this is building on each other
Because God is rich in mercy and loves us, He chose to send Jesus to die on the cross to save us
to save us from the offense of sin the sin we are guilty of
The Gospel says that Jesus is the only way to get to heaven
Like we talked about last week that Jesus was always going to be the way and is still the only way, Jesus is not just a way but the only way
Jesus is enough to save us
You and I when we share with people the Gospel need to share that Jesus is the only way but that Jesus is it
Jesus and church do not save you, Jesus and religion do not save you, Jesus and giving or serving do not save
It is Jesus and just Jesus that saves you
The Gospel is simply Jesus, and nothing else
That is the Gospel, that God being rich in mercy loved you and I enough to send his son to the cross to save you and I from the sin that you and I are guilty of us, and it is Jesus and nothing else that saves
That is the Gospel with brings us to the next letter of P and the now the ball is in your court
P
Personal response -
Ephesians 2:5 NASB95
5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
;
Ephesians 2:8–9 NASB95
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9
The ball is now in your court
God sent his son to the cross to save you and I
Jesus is the Gospel and is the only way nothing else
It is not your and I work, you and I cant and are not good enough to get into heaven on our own
The choice to follow Jesus is entirely our own, no one elses
moms and dads as much as we would like to make that decision for our children we can not,
It is a personal choice that everyone must make, which is why we are telling people, they cannot decide if they do not know,
E
Eternal urgency -
Ephesians 2:7 NASB95
7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
You and I will live for eternity, not our fleshly bodies but our souls will
We do get to decide where we spend eternity eitehr in a place called heaven with Jesus only because of Jesus or in a place called hell, only because we did not choose Jesus
This Gospel was for the Jews first and then for the Gentials
It is urgent that we share with people becasue we do not know the time when people will die, and
the question is how much do we ahve to hate someone to not tell them about Christ?
L
Life transformation -
Ephesians 2:10 NASB95
10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
Because of the Gospel you and I have accepted Jesus and have accepted the Gospel the result of that is a transformed life
If you and are children of God and have the Holy Spirit living in us then you and I are going to look and act different than the world
Good trees bare good fruit, to help each other grow you and I as brothers and sisters in Christ need to be fruit inspectors
it is only because of Jesus that you and I can live a life transformed
