Intro

Romans 5:1–5 ESV
1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Necessary (Chs. 1-3)
Romans 3:9–20 ESV
9 What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, 10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” 13 “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.” 14 “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” 15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 in their paths are ruin and misery, 17 and the way of peace they have not known.” 18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” 19 Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

These chapters reveal various fruits of justification
Peace, freedom from sin, new desires, no longer under law, no condemnation, heirs with Christ, glorification
Last verse of each chapter “Through/in Jesus Christ”
The first fruit we see is “peace with God”
All

Peace With God (1)

Former enemies (8:7-8)
cursed, rebels, wrath
Now faithful friends
Not condemned (8:1)
Reconciled (5: 9-11)
Not by negotiation, but by PROPITIATION
We have nothing to negotiate with. Only sin.
Peace comes after annihilation. Christ annihilates our guilt through Propitiation ()
We have peace with God b/c Christ has peace with God

This Divine Peace yields 4 Spiritual Benefits

Access to God (2a)
Greek word (Prosagoge) - presence of a superior with intent to speak to superior

Romans 5:12 ESV
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
Romans 5:17 ESV
17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.
**WE EITHER STAND IN THE LIVING WATER OF JESUS CHRIST OR LIE DEAD IN THE DESERT OF ADAM**
Christ makes intercession for those He represents
Romans 8:34 ESV
34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
Even more…He ever lives to intercede for His people
Even more…He ever lives to intercede for His people
Hebrews 7:25 ESV
25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
2. Rejoice in the hope of the glory of God (2b)
2. Rejoice in the hope of the glory of God (2b)
a. Marvelous salvation God has in store for those who trust Him (The Gospel)
Colossians 1:27 ESV
27 To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
b. We rejoice in the mystery that is Christ in us
b. We rejoice in the mystery that is Christ in us
3. Hope anchored in this chain of truths (3,4)
a. Rejoice “in our sufferings” - tribulations from carrying out Gospel work
Romans 8:35–39 ESV
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
How can we rejoice in suffering? Our weakness magnifies God’s power
2 Corinthians 7:9–10 ESV
9 As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us. 10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.
2 Corinthians 12:9–10 ESV
9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
2 Corinthians 9:9–10 ESV
9 As it is written, “He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” 10 He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.
2 Corinthians 12:7–10 ESV
7 So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me.
2 cor 9:91
2 Cor 12:
Suffering shows Christ’s sufficiency and strengthens one’s faith bringing about endurance
Suffering shows Christ’s sufficiency and strengthens one’s faith bringing about endurance
Suffering shows Christ’s sufficiency and strengthens one’s faith bringing about endurance
Suffering shows Christ’s sufficiency and strengthens one’s faith bringing about endurance
b. Suffering produces endurance
Result of Holy Spirit’s work, but is not passive
We are told to “hold fast” and “be faithful unto death” ()
c. Endurance produces character
Sustained the test as gold and silver in the fire burning away impurities ()
Patient perseverance/Character produces hope
4. In this hope we have certainty of salvation (5)
a. Those with no hope
Ephesians 2:12 ESV
12 remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
b. Those justified by faith and reconciled to God cherish the kind of hope that does not disappoint
Psalm 22:5 ESV
5 To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame.
c. Our hope is firmly anchored in God’s redeeming love ()
Moored to the throne of grace
d. God’s love is not rationed, but “poured out”/ dispensed by Holy Spirit
Abundantly as in the feeding of the 5,000 (Matt 14:20)
Thoroughly as in the washing away of sin
Isaiah 1:18 ESV
18 “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.
Not our love

Conclusion

All of these truths shed light on the divine deed of Justification by Faith in Jesus Christ
**COURTROOM ILLUSTRATION**
Earthly Judge - finds the accused not guilty acquits him or sentences him if guilty then dismisses him from courtroom and has no further dealings with him
God as Judge - Finds accused guilty every time, blots out his guilt on the basis of Christ’s work as guilt bearer then, through His Spirit, pours his love into the guilty heart and adopts him as his own son or daughter.
It is in this forensic transaction of being declared not guilty based on the person and work of Jesus Christ that our sin is imputed to Christ and His righteousness is imputed to us, not because of our own worthiness or goodness, but because of the unconditional love of God, as expressed in , toward His people. It is in this all satisfying and redeeming love of God that we find peace through our Lord Jesus Christ.
