As our scripture has told us and pointed out for us, Jesus said he was “I AM!” Is there a connection between God saying he is I AM and Jesus also?
Can Jesus really be fully divine and fully human?
Yes, there is a connection, because I AM is the name of God.
Jesus throughout his ministry helps us understand that he is the Son of God.
John helps us understand who Jesus is right away in John chapter 1.
In chapter 1, John not only tells us Jesus is the Creator, but that He is the Son of God, who became flesh and dwelt among us.
Therefore, it is natural for Jesus to say he is I AM!

There are seven I Am statements that Jesus makes!
I am the bread of life!
I am the light of the world!

Old Testament
God reveals to Moses that his name is “I AM WHO I AM” in .
Moses is to tell the Israelites that I AM sent him to bring them out of Egypt.
God again in not only says he is the only God, but that his name is I AM.
God had revealed himself to the Israelites as they were wondering in the dessert, but yet they did not fully grasp that he was the only God.
God wanted them to realize no one else could have delivered them out of the bondage of slavery.
God is the only one who can deliver us out of the bondage of sin and death.
What does this mean?
Well God is our Creator and Sustainer of life.
God loves us!
He loves us so much that he sent his only Son to die on the cross for our sins.
God is the supreme authority and the only God!
There is no other god by which we can be saved!
God is our deliverer!
New Testament
The Gospel of John has seven statements that Jesus declared he was.
Since Jesus and God are one (), there is no reason to deny that Jesus really is I AM!
The purpose of John’s Gospel is to help us “believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing [we] may have life in his name” ().
The seven I AM statements not only show who Jesus is, but make it clear that Jesus is the Messiah!
I am the bread of life!
The first I AM statement Jesus makes is that he is the bread of life!
Yes, God is the bread of life, but so is Jesus.
Why? Jesus is God!
This statement refers to more than Jesus providing the much needed nourishment for our bodies, meaning food.
This statement reveals that Jesus is our Creator and that he Sustains life!
Jesus is also wanting us to know and understand that life only comes through accepting him as our Lord and Savior.
I am the light of the world!
Jesus is the only way to eternal life ().
Jesus really is the light of life ().
Jesus wants us to understand that God is the only one we should worship.
Since Jesus is the light of the world, God is reminding us that he will lead us and does lead us when we look to him.
God not only lead the children of Israel by light, he leads all his children.
Jesus’ statement is for the whole world not a portion, but all of the world.
This is referring again to Jesus being the Creator and thee only God; or as some would say superior.
Jesus is therefore, helping the disciples and us understand that he and God are one and the same.
Jesus gives us victory over sin because he is our redeemer.
I am the door of the sheep!
Again Jesus makes it very clear that he is the only way to be saved.
Jesus is the one who not only leads people to God, but is the one who saves the sinner ().
The world is only saved through Jesus.
The only way to have a relationship with God is through his Son!
The only road to heaven is through Jesus!
There is no other way by which we are saved ().
I am the good shepherd!
Jesus is not only the door, but the shepherd.
He is perfect in every way!
Jesus knows each of us by name.
If we are followers of Christ, we know his voice.
We end up knowing the difference between Jesus and Satan.
Since Jesus is the good shepherd, he lays down his life for his sheep because he loves them and cares for them.
The sheep are believers.
For Jesus to be the door, he has to be the good shepherd as well.
Jesus laid down his life for us so that we would be saved.

Jesus has the power to give life and take it.
Again, Jesus is making it clear that he is not just our redeemer, but the one who grants eternal life.

Jesus being the Creator and Sustainer of life is the one by whom we live, if we believe in him.
We can have assurance of our salvation.
We can know for sure that we are saved through faith.
I am the way, the truth, and the life!
Since, Jesus and God are one, the life of God resides in him.
Jesus bares life, but truth is found only in him, because he is truth ().
Jesus is the only way to God!
We cannot get to God on our own, we need Jesus!
We are to look at no one else but God.
Jesus is truth, means truth is found no where else!
We cannot say what is truth or what is right and wrong; only God can!
To know the truth we have to not just read God’s Word, but enter a relationship with him; which can only be done through Christ.
I am the true vine!
Again, Jesus is saying he is the source of life.
