Who Am I?

Introduction

I want to ask you a question today - who are you? I mean, beyond your name. It’s always struck me as funny that after we get a person’s name, we ask “What do you do?” We understand that our identity if wrapped up in activity. We might ask someone about their family or where they are from as a means of getting to know them. All of this to try and answer the question, who are you? If I asked your family or your friends, what would they say about who you are? It’s question to ponder.

But sometimes we need to ask a deeper, more profound and philosophical question and that is who am I? Now, just because I say I am something, doesn’t make it so. You all like to remind me of this when I say I am an old man. You are quick to point out that I am not old. And I suppose that is fair, even if I feel old many days. Just because I say I am something doesn’t make it true.

Ultimately, you don’t get to say who you are and those around you don’t get to say who you are. Sure, I can say my name is Thomas, but that doesn’t define who I am. It’s just a name. Ultimately, the one who gets to define who I am and who you are isn’t us as individuals, but the one who created us. It is God who gives us value and worth, not ourselves or those around us. And it is God that gets to define the reality of our identity no matter what you or I might say.

Today, our continued study of Paul’s letter to the Galatians brings us to the topic of identity and we’ll be here for a few weeks. And the question we must answer is simply this “Who Am I in Christ?” Because the answer to that question is foundational to our next few weeks as Paul pivots us from understanding how one is saved to understanding what the benefits of salvation are for each one of us.
