Joy
Joy
Joy is more than just happiness; Tonight we are going to look at biblical joy and what that should look like in our lives.
(Insert slide- Eeyore)
(insert slide - Tigger)
Joy is morning that overcoming the Eeyore attitude we can get from time to time. It is also not strolling through life with the ignorant bliss like Tigger.
I. Biblical Joy
I. Biblical Joy
So where does joy come from?
Joy has to come from Jesus, and it is His joy (Jn15:11)
11 “These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.
Joy comes in the presence of the Lord (Psm16:11)
11 You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.
There are some requirements for joy though (Jn15:7-11)
7 “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 “My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.
9 “Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love. 10 “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
11 “These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.
So, what are the requirements?
Abide in Me, Let His words abide in you
Abide in His love
The results are you will glorify God, you will bear fruit and your joy may be full.
Happiness is dependent on circumstances; in fact true joy oftentimes is displayed in being content even in the difficult times.
God wants us to know inner contentment (joy) despite any circumstances. It differs from happiness.
Happiness vs. Joy
Happiness is a state of mine, while joy is a mind-set
Happiness comes and goes, while joy can be constant
Happiness is dependent, while joy in independent
Happiness is conditional, while joy is unconditional
Another example of biblical joy (Php4:11-13)
11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: 12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
How about this example (Jm1:2-4)
2 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.
4 And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
It is not about eliminating, avoiding negative, difficult circumstances.
It is learning to embrace them knowing they are working things for your maturity.
Opportunities to strengthen faith
And to gain resolve
End result of biblical joy, it is being mature and complete in Christ. It is when that which is lost is found! (Lk15:3-7)
3 So He told them this parable, saying, 4 “What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture and go after the one which is lost until he finds it?
5 “When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 “And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’
7 “I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
7 so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink.
II. Biblical Joy in Action
II. Biblical Joy in Action
Let your joy be your filter, don’t be an Eeyore or a Tigger
Joy will change your perspective and your perception of negative circumstances.
Joy helps us get an eternal mindset; and yes, it even helps reduce stress
Biblical joy lifts others up, encourages others where despair discourages and brings them down.
Biblical joy will be apparent to others and it will also be a draw to others.
From inward focus to reducing stress, to internal transformation leading to outward attraction to others. Biblical joy changes countenance.
III. Biblical Joy Changes Countenance
III. Biblical Joy Changes Countenance
Our countenance is apparent to others. So may the joy of the Lord be our countenance.
There is the fallen, angry countenance (Gen4:5-7)
5 but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell. 6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?
7 “If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it.”
There is sad countenance (Job9:27)
27 “Though I say, ‘I will forget my complaint, I will leave off my sad countenance and be cheerful,’
The Lord can change our countenance (Psm43:5)
5 Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.
May we walk in the countenance of the Lord (Psm89:15-16)
15 How blessed are the people who know the joyful sound! O Lord, they walk in the light of Your countenance. 16 In Your name they rejoice all the day, And by Your righteousness they are exalted.
III. Biblical Joy some reminders
III. Biblical Joy some reminders
Don’t we all need some good biblical reminders, tonight is not any different so here you go.
Biblical Joy is found in God’s presence as mentioned before (1Chr16:27; Psm16:11
27 Splendor and majesty are before Him, Strength and joy are in His place.
1Chr16:27
And then there is this
11 You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.
Fullness of joy!
For then we can know
7 The Lord is my strength and my shield; My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart exults, And with my song I shall thank Him.
And we can invites others to come to know like we have
8 O taste and see that the Lord is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
Biblical joy is available in every season (Pro3:5-6; Psm1:1-3; Psm19:8; Psm119:1-3 and Gal5:22)
Biblical joy comes when we trust and follow God’s truth
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.
It may not always make sense, you may not always understand it, but when we trust God and follow His ways we will prosper.
1 How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. 3 He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.
Then add this
8 The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
Rejoicing the heart and enlightening the eyes
1 How blessed are those whose way is blameless, Who walk in the law of the Lord. 2 How blessed are those who observe His testimonies, Who seek Him with all their heart.
3 They also do no unrighteousness; They walk in His ways.
and we know to the believer that biblical joy is part of the fruit of the Spirit
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Biblical joy comes from trusting God with our future and it brings undeniable joy and peace (Pro16:20; Psm28:7; Psm30:11)
20 He who gives attention to the word will find good, And blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.
God’s Word, give attention to it and you will find good and you will be blessed.
7 The Lord is my strength and my shield; My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart exults, And with my song I shall thank Him.
I know I used that one a little while ago, but it works here too, My heart trusts in Him!
11 You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have loosed my sackcloth and girded me with gladness,
Joy is one of the gifts from God that keeps on giving, or it radiates out (Rom15:13; 2Cor6:10; 2Cor4:7-10)
13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
He is the God of hope, who will fill us with all joy and peace!
10 as sorrowful yet always rejoicing, as poor yet making many rich, as having nothing yet possessing all things.
Even when we face times of sorrow, we can rejoice!
7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; 8 we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing;
9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.
just one more and we will call it a night, a joy filled night.
Biblical joy transforms our difficult circumstances, our hard times into times of blessings (1Pt1:6-8)
6 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, 7 so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
8 and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,
Joy that inexpressible and full of glory!
Biblical joy is found in Him. so
