Why do chicken coops only have two doors? Because if they had four, they would be chicken sedans!
Why did the invisible man turn down the job offer? He couldn't see himself doing it.
What is Beethoven’s favorite fruit? A ba-na-na-na.
24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your happiness may be complete.
25 “I have used figures of speech to tell you these things. But the time will come when I will not use figures of speech, but will speak to you plainly about the Father.
26 When that day comes, you will ask him in my name; and I do not say that I will ask him on your behalf,
27 for the Father himself loves you. He loves you because you love me and have believed that I came from God.
28 I did come from the Father, and I came into the world; and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”
29 Then his disciples said to him, “Now you are speaking plainly, without using figures of speech.
30 We know now that you know everything; you do not need someone to ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.”
31 Jesus answered them, “Do you believe now?
32 The time is coming, and is already here, when all of you will be scattered, each of you to your own home, and I will be left all alone. But I am not really alone, because the Father is with me.
33 I have told you this so that you will have peace by being united to me. The world will make you suffer. But be brave! I have defeated the world!”
John 16:24-33
What kind of father sends his son on such a mission? Into such difficulty?
The kind of father who goes with him. He tells His disciples “you will abandon me, but I will not be alone. The Father is with me”. And remember the words of Jesus even, when talking to the disciples: I will not leave you as orphans, I will come to you! What beautiful promise there is in the truth that we are not alone! He is the one who, when the 99 are safe, goes after the 1.
Does a father send his child into the woods before first showing how to navigate the woods. Teaching what game trails look like and what poison ivy is?
Does he expect his child to be able to mow the yard without first walking alongside?
I recently watched a video on social media about the new phenomenon ‘adulting classes’. How to do things adults should know how to do. Like changing a flat tire or sewing a button or paying bills on time. A comment in that video said ‘this is needed for young adults because schools are no longer teaching these skills’. !!!! No! Melonie and I accept full responsibility for teaching our kids.
The Trinity - great topical bible study for our sunday night crew
“You shall have no other gods before me.
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
God has chosen to reveal himself to man in three unique ways: Father, Son, Holy Spirit
Veiled in the OT, He is most often referred to as ‘Father’, also can be understood to be the Word from creation and . He is Wisdom in Job and Proverbs and is Breath or Wind in various OT descriptions as well. The Son and Spirit both proceed from the Father, yet are eternal in existence like the Father.
We see pre-incarnate forms of Jesus in some of the miracles of the OT, such as the fiery furnace we mentioned last week.
We see the Spirit of God coming upon rulers, judges and prophets, often empowering man.
In the NT the veil is pulled back at the baptism of Jesus. The Spirit appears as a dove while the Father speaks over the event “this is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased”.
As Jesus explained to the disciples, I go to the Father so I can send you the Holy Spirit.
“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.
…is the intertwining of the 3. Do I need the Father, who is my Shepherd from Psalms? Do I need the Son who is the Way, the Truth and the Life from the Gospels? Do I need the Holy Spirit who is the presence of God in every believer as seen in Acts? YES
So what is the benefit of having access to the three distinct beings of the Godhead?
tells us we are chosen and adopted by the Father, redeemed and forgiven by the Son and sealed and secured by the Holy Spirit.
Because God has chosen to reveal Himself as three distinct beings, we have access to the fullness of God. Better understanding of all He is and has for us than anyone before us in history.
Little boy at the ocean: I’m putting the ocean in this hole.
A Good, Good Father - considering God as the Trinity
He showed His goodness:
While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.
He did not spare His Son: On OUR behalf. As Father to US. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Ephesians 8:31-32
Paul was convinced of the goodness, the generosity of the Father. Sometimes we earthly fathers makes it difficult to see God as a good heavenly father. But in all the ways a human might disappoint us, He never does/never will. He doesnt withhold any good thing from us.
Sometimes that good thing is a trial that grows patience or faith.
Sometimes that good thing is discipline that turns our heart back to Him.
Sometimes that good thing is a season of rest and peace.
1 When David’s time to die drew near, he commanded Solomon his son, saying,
2 “I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself a man,
3 and keep the charge of the Lord your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn,
4 that the Lord may establish his word that he spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk before me in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul, you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’
