Is Hate and Evil Spreading
Because it is! A quick look at the news we can rightly assume that evil is spreading around the country and the world. School shootings are a phenomena that has an an explosion in occurrences. People have many ideas on what causes this and how to fix the problem. Many will blame the gun, or the availability of the guns, while others blame the gun free zones. There is a portion of people that blame the accessibility into the school building, while another group blames the mental health of the shooter.
The Basic Cause of evil
In the Baker encyclopedia of Christian apologetics (BECA) Theists distinguish between the primary cause of a free action (God) and the secondary cause (a human being).
God has given the power of choice, but God is not responsible for the exercise of that choice to do evil. In so much that God does not perform the act like a puppet master is in charge of his puppets, this is of man’s doing and action, he alone is responsible. A person could say that God is responsible for the possibility of evil, but we must bear the responsibility for the actuality of it. Through scripture and theology, we know that God neither wills it to be done. God does, however allow evil to be committed but He is not the author or creator of it.
Where does Evil Come from
The heart!
and desperately sick; who can understand it? “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”
The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.
Man's heart and flesh completely go against the nature of God because of the fall. The sources for evil are creation and free will. Both are made good but we have the ability and freedom to choose what path we are going to take. The unfortunate result is creatures using this good power to bring evil into the world by rebelling against God, their Creator. The rise of evil is indirectly, not directly through the abuse of a good power - freedom. Freedom in itself is not bad, but with freedom comes the possibility of evil. Rust on a car is a perfect example. A car is a good invention, but without the proper care rust begin to form, deteriorating the car. Rust was not part of the creation but a result from improper use, care and attention. (maintenance)
The Spread of Evil
Jesus warns that we are to be aware of the teachings around us in (Jesus said to them, “Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”) Jesus is not talking about bread but what happens with the yeast inside the lump. Evil, false teachings and sin multiply when care is not given. Rust begins to form on a car because the lack of maintenance and care of that car. Evil comes into a life because of the lack of maintenance and care in a life and then spreads. A life with no good in it lacks as existence. A totally rusted car, is not a car at all but a pile of desecrated metal. A moth-eaten garment is nothing but a hangar in a closet. Destruction spreads if the proper care is not maintained. Paul taught in (that a little leaven leavens the whole lump.)
Because of the growth and spread of evil, lawlessness will spread and the love of many will grow cold. The light of love in ones heart will grow dim and dark with sin. Yeast makes the bread raise and infiltrates the entire lump. Hate, gossip and sin are the active ingredients of evil. Just as gossip travels faster than truth, evil grows unbridled and contaminates our society.
Jesus taught in (“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.) that the students learn from the teacher. Since the society has removed or changed the definition of truth, what are they learning? The culture now teaches that it is whatever makes you happy. What is true for one may not be true for another. It is a self-gratification, needs based line that continues to move. Until we get back to a God-centered, morality based set of facts and truths. Evil will continue to grow.

Inconsistent teaching
That may be a joke but it really defines the issues. People do not engage in conversations, they don’t study the Bible and many do not know scripture or how to look it up. We are more interested in not offending someone, than introducing them to Jesus.
There is an inconstancy in teaching across the board. Interpretations runs wildly different depending on what denomination you belong to, if you hear any scripture in a Sunday service.
The church service today or many of them is more about politics, how to feel good or topical messages instead of the word of God. The church is not teaching and studying God’s word, nor are they sharing it.
I have had more visits from non-christian churches sharing what they believe than I have had of Christians brothers coming to my house. Forget about having a discussion out in public. Why is it so hard for us as Christian brothers and sisters to just go door to door and share what we believe and why? We don’t have to get into debates about scripture but we can share the Hope and love that is in Christ with our neighbors.

Is the Old Testament Relevant today
Many would say that the Old Testament is hard to understand. That it is confusing and in many cases troubling because of the violence held within the text. Many believers and some pastors say that the Old Testament is not relevant and should be unhinged from the rest of the BIble.
The argument goes that Jesus is in the New Testament and not the old. Many of the covenants and laws do not apply to us today. Jesus is the new covenant. Grace and faith are not in the Old Testament and is paramount for salvation. Jesus taught something new and replaced the law (Something new - fulfilled it - end it- replaced it). My favorite, the Old and New Testament cannot be reconciled together.

Old Covenants and OT Laws do not apply
To understand we have to realize who the laws were given to and why. The Old Testament laws were given to the Israelites and for specific purposes in living and how to obey God (Ten Commandments). Some laws were to set Israel apart from other countries (laws on clothing and food). Then other laws were on how to worship God and atone for sin (sacrificial laws). Some would claim that the laws are not binding to Christians, but I do not hold that belief. The laws specific to Israel are for them but there are laws that do pertain to us and how to live (Ten Commandments).
Jesus teaches in the difference between abolish and fulfill. He didn’t abolish but fulfill the law and the prophecies in their fullest expression or extent. Jesus set the standards for living and how to obey God, as well as the way to live being set apart. The blood shed on the cross was the ultimate atonement for our sin, and we are made righteous through Christ before God.
“Have we been freed from the curse and burden of the Mosaic law just to be burdened down with a more radical law of Christ? No. The difference is that Moses gave us a law but could not change our hearts so that we would freely obey. Our pride and rebellion was not conquered by Moses. But when Christ summons us to obey his law of love, he offers us himself to slay the dragon of our pride, change our hearts, empower us by his Spirit, and fulfill his law.” John Piper.
Jesus is the New Covenant
And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. Jesus work, death and resurrection shows the promise of our new life in Christ. That through grace and mercy our sins are buried, covered and cleansed by the sacrifice of Christ blood. The one pure lamb, who’s blood is perfect, who required by God to be born under the law so to be able to fulfill the law.
Christ is not only the Head of the covenant but also the Surety of the covenant of redemption, (This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant.). Christ took the place of the sinner, to bear the penalty of sin and to meet the demands of the law for His people. By so doing He became the last Adam, a life-giving spirit,
(Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.). For Christ this covenant was a covenant of works, in which He met the requirements of the original covenant, but for us it is the eternal foundation of the covenant of grace. Its benefits are limited to the elect. They only obtain the redemption and inherit the glory which Christ merited for sinners.
So does this new covenant do away with the old law and introduce a law? Not in so many words. Jesus in the sermon on the mount (, ,& 7) lays out what many claim to be new teachings. But they are not new, but clarifications of the old testament. Jesus teachings on the greatest commandments in is not anything new because He is citing and
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Chapters 5, 6 and 7 have a solid base in the Ten Commandments, as well as the Beatitudes having a foundation through other teachings in the Old Testament as Isaiah and Psalms. Jesus teaches that it is not just the act but the heart where sin grows. The law can do nothing to change a heart, only Jesus Christ has that ability.
We Are Under Grace, not the law
For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!
Grace is not a license to sin. Just because we are no longer under many of the requirements that are in the Old Testament, we can’t go and do as we please. We are going to follow someone, either Christ or sin. Under the covenant of Grace, we do have requirements to fulfill. Under the law it was works and legalism. Under grace we have two requirements 1) that we accept Christ, the covenant and the promises under the new covenant on faith (alone) and 2) being born into a new life, that we give ourselves completely to God in obedience
Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.

Grace covers our sin
Grace removed the oppressive requirements of the mosaic law. Mankind could not even begin to live up to those standards. The law actually shows the need for a savior because we can’t follow it completely. The original question was “is the Old testament relevant today?” Yes, because it shows the foundational need for a savior. It has foundational truths that still applies in our daily living. However, and to me most important, it teaches us and gives us a complete look at who God is and His attributes. If we are committing to being obedient, should we not have a complete picture of Him?
