A Careful Tongue
A Careful Tongue
Let me ask you a question, Have you ever said something and regretted it?
You might be telling me, Preacher that is a dumb question? Because without a doubt, we have all done that, we have been talking and suddenly without enough caution, we let something out…
We might call it letting the cat out of the bag if you will....
But here is the truth, the Scriptures warn us about the dangers of the tongue in both the Old and the New Testaments
So lets your Bible and lets go to Proverbs chapter 10
lets look at verses 18-20
18 The one who conceals hatred has lying lips,
and whoever utters slander is a fool.
19 When words are many, transgression is not lacking,
but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.
20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver;
the heart of the wicked is of little worth.
Prov 10:18-20
Now the whole chapter has a pattern of good actions contrasted by evil or foolish actions.
Now the pattern is important, without a doubt, people need to hear that good actions, good behavior and good speech bring life and foolish, evil and divisive ways, well that bring death, .....
18 The one who conceals hatred has lying lips,
and whoever utters slander is a fool.
The word hide here is ka-sah in the Hebrew, and it speaks of forgiveness, yet to conceal it means that there is no forgiveness in mind. His ways are evil and they seek to stay on the path of death instead of life.
;
And in the second portion of the verse, utters slander. The word utter means to spread like scattering seed. To defame, to hurt by spreading false truths…etc.
The fool is the one who lives by these principles, it is not the idea they are slow witted or uneducated by any means.... in truth they are a rebellious person.
A person like this will hurt the lives of so many, they destroy and tear down life....
Now verse 19
19 When words are many, transgression is not lacking,
but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.
Have you ever notices something who talked to much.... they talk so much they get in trouble. They talk and say the wrong things, the share to much and at times you might want to say to them… be quite..
Solomon says many words reminds us that sin is close by.... but a wide person has tight lips...
1 I said, “I will guard my ways,
that I may not sin with my tongue;
I will guard my mouth with a muzzle,
so long as the wicked are in my presence.”
and then this passage from James in the New testament
26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.
Now if we jump over to the New Testament we find the words of James.... James tells the early church of the trouble the tongue causes....
Listen to , it says a lot....
5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.
How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!
In the previous verses we know that James has spoken of bits in the mouth of horses (verse 3), and how the rubber, a small device can stir an entire ship no matter how large (verse 4).... and the tongue while small can boast big things, even like a spark that sets a whole forest ablaze...
It signifies that the tongue is a powerful member that we must endeavor to be careful with… for it can cause great trouble......
Now lets look back at Proverbs 10
20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver;
the heart of the wicked is of little worth.
Proverb 10:20
What does Solomon mean here?
There is great worth in right speech
Right speech is the fruit of a good heart, but the wicked show theirs to be useless.
The term righteous describes the the moral and spiritual attributes of the person, as such, all that comes from them is the natural out pouring of the heart
the righteous heart, produces good character...
But look at the last part of verse 20.......
Prob 10:20b “...the heart of the wicked is of little worth.”
We see that the natural outflow of the wicked is of no true value’ listen to verse 11
11 The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,
but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
Prov 10:11
Our heart and our speech are so interwoven that we cannot speak of one without connecting it to the other.
****** so here is a question we must ask ourselves********
The question I have for myself today is whether I’m ever that person who speaks too much and listens too little.
I fear that just as I wonder why others seemingly can’t see that trait in themselves, I, too, might miss it in me at times. My prayer is that when I do speak, my words would always feed others.
ACTION STEPS:
Check your words today. Pray before you speak.Intentionally speak words that edify others today.
1 My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. 2 For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, 3 and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” 4 have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? 5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court? 7 Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called?
8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. 9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. 11 For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. 12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty. 13 For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
18 But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! 20 Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; 23 and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God. 24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? 26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.
1 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. 2 For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. 3 If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. 4 Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.
How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
1 The proverbs of Solomon.
A wise son makes a glad father,
but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.
2 Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit,
but righteousness delivers from death.
3 The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry,
but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.
4 A slack hand causes poverty,
but the hand of the diligent makes rich.
5 He who gathers in summer is a prudent son,
but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who brings shame.
6 Blessings are on the head of the righteous,
but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
7 The memory of the righteous is a blessing,
but the name of the wicked will rot.
8 The wise of heart will receive commandments,
but a babbling fool will come to ruin.
9 Whoever walks in integrity walks securely,
but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.
10 Whoever winks the eye causes trouble,
and a babbling fool will come to ruin.
11 The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,
but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
12 Hatred stirs up strife,
but love covers all offenses.
13 On the lips of him who has understanding, wisdom is found,
but a rod is for the back of him who lacks sense.
14 The wise lay up knowledge,
but the mouth of a fool brings ruin near.
15 A rich man’s wealth is his strong city;
the poverty of the poor is their ruin.
16 The wage of the righteous leads to life,
the gain of the wicked to sin.
17 Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life,
but he who rejects reproof leads others astray.
18 The one who conceals hatred has lying lips,
and whoever utters slander is a fool.
19 When words are many, transgression is not lacking,
but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.
20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver;
the heart of the wicked is of little worth.
21 The lips of the righteous feed many,
but fools die for lack of sense.
22 The blessing of the Lord makes rich,
and he adds no sorrow with it.
23 Doing wrong is like a joke to a fool,
but wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding.
24 What the wicked dreads will come upon him,
but the desire of the righteous will be granted.
25 When the tempest passes, the wicked is no more,
but the righteous is established forever.
26 Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes,
so is the sluggard to those who send him.
27 The fear of the Lord prolongs life,
but the years of the wicked will be short.
28 The hope of the righteous brings joy,
but the expectation of the wicked will perish.
29 The way of the Lord is a stronghold to the blameless,
but destruction to evildoers.
30 The righteous will never be removed,
but the wicked will not dwell in the land.
31 The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom,
but the perverse tongue will be cut off.
32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable,
but the mouth of the wicked, what is perverse.
The writer of recognized this issue, too. Indeed, he concluded, “When there are many words, sin is unavoidable, but the one who controls his lips is prudent” (). It happens—when we just keep talking, sin will work its way to our lips. Thus, godly wisdom, it seems, sometimes means being quiet.
At other times, the tongue can be an instrument of teaching and instruction; for the righteous one, the tongue is “pure silver” (). It is the reflection of a clean heart just as the heart and tongue of the wicked are of “little value” ().
