Matthew 3:13–17 HCSB
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried to stop Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and yet You come to me?” 15 Jesus answered him, “Allow it for now, because this is the way for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him to be baptized. 16 After Jesus was baptized, He went up immediately from the water. The heavens suddenly opened for Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on Him. 17 And there came a voice from heaven: This is My beloved Son. I take delight in Him!

Intro:

This is the first time the Trinity, the three persons of the Godhead, is clearly seen in the New Testament. The Son, Jesus Christ, was being baptized; the Holy Spirit descended upon the Son; and God the Father voiced His approval.

I. His Father’s Presence

16 After Jesus was baptized, He went up immediately from the water. The heavens suddenly opened for Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on Him.

God the Holy Spirit: Seen but Not Heard At the baptism of Jesus, the Spirit of God descends like a dove to rest on Jesus. Matthew has already drawn our attention to the intimate relationship between Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. The virginal conception of Jesus was by the power of the Holy Spirit (). The mission of Jesus is to be understood in terms of Jesus’ baptizing his people with the Holy Spirit (). And now, the Spirit-filled Jesus, who will impart the Spirit to others, receives the Holy Spirit himself in a fresh anointing that marks both the commencement of his public ministry and the Father’s equipping of Jesus for that ministry. Matthew records that a dove is seen but he knows it to be the Holy Spirit. Then John comes along and said,

Jn. 1:32 And John testified, “I watched the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He rested on Him. Interestingly, he makes Jesus the subject of the verb: ‘he saw the Spirit of God descending’ (3:16). Jesus knew what this was and who this was.

II. His Father’s Proclamation

17a And there came a voice from heaven: This is My beloved Son.

God the Father: Heard but Not Seen

A voice speaks from heaven. It is the voice of the Father of the One who is being baptized. Immediately, therefore, we are confronted with the reality that the Father of this Son is in heaven, while the Son of this Father is on earth. Jesus is already the Son of this Father. God is his Father, not by adoption but by nature. This Son was with the Father but is distinct from the Father, says, he was with God and was God. life app.

The Father Is Not Ashamed of the Son “My Son.” This statement tells is that God is not ashamed of the Lord Jesus. What an example to us human parents.

Our children need to know that we are proud of them and that we are not ashamed to claim them as our own. 1. Children need constant affirmation from their parents and will usually live up to your estimate of their worth! Therefore, be very careful how you treat your children. Be quick to let them know that you are proud of them, just like the Heavenly Father!

The Father Adores the Son Notice that the Father calls the Son, “Beloved.” This means One who is dearly loved.

2. Children can live without many things, but love is not one of them! Perhaps the greatest gift a parent can give a child, besides the knowledge of the Lord, is the knowledge that they are loved unconditionally. They need to hear those three magic words: “I love you!”

III. His Father’s Pleasure

17b I take delight in Him!

God the Son: Seen and Heard

The context. As soon as the baptism of Christ is finished, the Father speaks from Heaven. God chose that exact moment to verbally associate Himself with his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. In the words which the Father spoke that day, we are given an example of how a godly father deals with his children. In this passage we can see an example that every dad needs to follow. Jesus was not baptized because He was a repentant sinner. Even John tried to stop Jesus, but the Lord knew it was His Father's will.

Why was Jesus baptized? First, His baptism gave approval to John's ministry. Second, He identified Himself with publicans and sinners, the very people He came to save. But mainly, His baptism pictured His future baptism on the cross (; ) when all the "waves and billows" of God's judgment would go over Him. life app:

The Father Accepts the Son The Father says that He is "well pleased” with the Son. These words mean "to approve of.” God the Father looked at the man Jesus Christ had become and said, “I approve of you my Son!” 3. We all know that our children might not turn out exactly like we expect them to. After all, who doesn't live in a fantasy world when it comes to their own children? Our kids may make mistakes and they may get into trouble, they may not be as successful as you think they could be. They may not dress right or look like you think they should, or any of 10 million other things could go wrong with our ideals for their lives.
