I. Two Furnishings In The Holy of Holies
A. The ark of the Covenant
The most important piece of furniture in all the tabernacle.
1. It is one of three Bible arks
All Three are types of the believer’s security from judgement
a. The ark of Noah
b. The ark of Moses
Both of these arks were lined with pitch to keep the water out. The word translated pitch is Kaphar - the OT word for atonement.
c. The ark of the Tabernacle.
This is the ultimate of types both of the Lord Jesus Christ and of our security as believers in Him.
2. It’s description
a. Materials used
(constructed by Bezaleel) Exodus 37:1-5
b. Measurements
c. It’s crown
The crown speaks of Christ’s divine right to reign.
While here His lovely brow was platted with a crown of thorns.
Phil 2:9-11 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
READ REV. 19:11-16!!!
(KING OF KINGS & LORD OF LORDS)
3. It’s contents
a. The golden pot of manna
(Exo 16:33 KJV) And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a pot, and put an omer full of manna therein, and lay it up before the LORD, to be kept for your generations.
Signifying Christ as the Bread of Life
(John 6:51 KJV) I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
Our supply and sufficiency in this life, all we need from the new birth till we are ushered into God’s presence, we find in Christ.
b. Aaron’s Rod that budded (See Numbers 17)
A symbol of resurrection (Life out of death).
c. The (broken) Law of God
The law demanded the death of the sinner.
The Ark is a seat of Judgement.
4. It’s Holiness
a. No one allowed to touch or to look upon or look within.
READ Numbers 4:4-15
b. The consequences of approaching ark w/o blood (Bethshemesh)
(1 Sam 6:19 KJV) And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.
B. The Mercy Seat (Exodus 25:17-22)
Jesus Christ is our “Mercy Seat”.
(Rom 3:25 KJV) Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation (hilasterion - mercy seat) through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
1. It’s description
a. Pure Gold (beaten)
Jesus was beaten at Gethsemane and Golgotha.
b. A covering for the ark.
c. The two cherubims of Gold
Facing each other and looking upon mercy seat.
Symbols of the holiness of God.
(Isa 6:3 KJV) And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.
***No angels at the brasen altar or brasen laver.
Angels may worship but not preach the Gospel!!
1 Pet 1:10-12 Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
(Heb 1:6 KJV) And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.
2. It’s Function
a. Blood to be spilled
(Exo 12:13 KJV) And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
b. Mercy covering judgement
The ark a seat of judgement, but covering it a seat of mercy!!!
c. The Shekinah Glory
II. The Day of Atonement (Lev. 16:1-34)
The sixth of seven annual Jewish feasts
Each of the feasts was a rich representation of the glories of redemption through the Lord Jesus Christ.
1. The Passover - Christ on the Cross (I Cor. 5:7).
2. Feast of Unleavened Bread - Christ Putting away our sins (Hebrews 9:26).
3. Feast of the Firstfruits - Christ’s Resurrection (I Cor. 15:20).
4. Pentecost - The gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1).
5. Feast of Trumpets - His second coming (I Corinthians 15:22; I Thess. 4:16).
6. The Day of Atonement - The substitutionary character and sacrificial death of Christ.
7. Feast of Tabernacles - A rest provided for the people of God.
A. Once a Year
Lev 16:29-30 And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you:
30 For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.
B. The High Priest Only
(Lev 16:17 KJV) And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement in the holy place, until he come out, and have made an atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel.
Jesus Christ went ALONE to Calvary!!
C. Details of the Observance
1. Offering for priest and his family
(Lev 16:11 KJV) And Aaron shall bring the bullock of the sin offering, which is for himself, and shall make an atonement for himself, and for his house, and shall kill the bullock of the sin offering which is for himself:
2. Offering for sins of people and nation
(Lev 16:15 KJV) Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the veil, and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat:
3. The animals used
(Lev 16:5 KJV) And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering.
a. Bullock for priest family - Leviticus 16:6
b. Goat for sins of Israel - Leviticus 16:15
c. The scapegoat - Leviticus 16:7-8, & 20-22
C. Christ before the Heavenly Mercy Seat (Hebrews 10:1-12).
Christ entered once after the resurrection.
(Heb 9:12 KJV) Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
COMPARE.........
(John 20:16 KJV) Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.
(John 20:17 KJV) Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
WITH..........
(Luke 24:36 KJV) And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
(Luke 24:37 KJV) But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.
(Luke 24:38 KJV) And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
(Luke 24:39 KJV) Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.
III. The Veil of the Tabernacle
A. The Flesh of Christ
(Heb 10:20 KJV) By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;
B. The Rending of the Veil (Mk 15:37-38; Lk 23:45)
(Mat 27:50 KJV) Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
(Mat 27:51 KJV) And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
Notice, it was rent from the top to the bottom, not bottom to top. It was a miraculous supernatural act of God!!!
C. An Open Approach to God
(Heb 4:14 KJV) Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
(Heb 4:15 KJV) For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
(Heb 4:16 KJV) Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
