Walk in Limp Out
Story of Clay Guida (Would not give up! Fought to the end! Limped out)
Genesis 25:24–34 ESV
When her days to give birth were completed, behold, there were twins in her womb. The first came out red, all his body like a hairy cloak, so they called his name Esau. Afterward his brother came out with his hand holding Esau’s heel, so his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them. When the boys grew up, Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents. Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob. Once when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted. And Esau said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!” (Therefore his name was called Edom.) Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright now.” Esau said, “I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?” Jacob said, “Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
Genesis 25:24–26 ESV

Genesis
Already Jacob is fighting for position! Already he is trying to pull his brother back!
Genesis 25:27 ESV
When the boys grew up, Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents.
Genesis 25:27-
Esau shops at cabellas! Jacob likes the mall! Esau prefers Carhart and Jacob likes Calvin Klein! Esau was Dad’s boy and Jacob his mothers.
Isaac and Rebekah
Genesis 25:29-
Genesis 25:29–34 ESV
27The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the open country, while Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents. 28Isaac, who had a taste for wild game, loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
So Esau despised his birthright.
Zach and Ben
29Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished. 30He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished!”
31Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.”
32“Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”
33But Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob.
34Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left.
So Esau despised his birthright.
I want to look at both sides of this transaction.
1st, Esau.
V32 He despised his birthright, didn’t take it serious. He was arrogant!
1 Samuel 2:3 ESV
Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.
“Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the Lord is a God who knows, and by him deeds are weighed.
“Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the Lord is a God who knows, and by him deeds are weighed.
His appetite became more important than his responsibility. He didn’t fear God!
“To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech. “
Proverbs 8:13 ESV
The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.
Our appetite for things of this world has become more important than what God has given us through his son. Why? Because we don’t fear God! We don’t respect him! Therefore we don’t want to give up things that satisfy the flesh to make room for responsibility or calling.
2nd, Jacob.
Jacob was manipulating the situation for his own personal gain! One didn’t want what he was given and the other wanted what wasn’t his!
We often want things in this life that are not ours! Possessions, status, etc.. Because we believe them to be correct for us! We don’t ask God’s opinion because deep down we know the answer! Jacob knew the answer! And in some cases we manipulate and scheme our way into them… Don’t judge Jacob! We do it everyday! Expound… Push our agenda
Why is my life a mess?
James 3:16 ESV
For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.
16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.
So Esau has sold his birthright, and now we find his father Isaac ill and ready to give the blessing to Esau as the first born.
Story of Jacobs deception… Hunt and Make me a meal. Rebekah hears and puts a plan in motion, goats hair etc.. Esau finds out and loses it!
Now the blessing is different! Esau was upset about loosing that because it equaled a double portion of the inheritance!
We want the blessings! And we are upset when they don’t come! But the birthright or responsibility we can do without!
The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways, but the folly of fools is deception.
Proverbs 14:8 ESV
The wisdom of the prudent is to discern his way, but the folly of fools is deceiving.
Jacob was a deceiver, he came in to this world fighting for position, hanging onto the heel of his brother. He wouldn’t stand up and fight! He lied and he manipulated his way through a great portion of his life seeking his desires and not seeing the bigger picture. His answer was consistently to run. He ran from his brother and was gone for 20 years! He never saw his mother again!
Story of Jacob’s travels.. Laban, deceived into marrying the wrong girl Leah. He loved Rachel. Worked 14 years for her! The deceiver was deceived! God calls Jacob to his homeland. Father n law troubles! Laban follows him! You took my grandchildren!
Next problem, His Brother!
Genesis 32:3–6 ESV
And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother in the land of Seir, the country of Edom, instructing them, “Thus you shall say to my lord Esau: Thus says your servant Jacob, ‘I have sojourned with Laban and stayed until now. I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, male servants, and female servants. I have sent to tell my lord, in order that I may find favor in your sight.’ ” And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau, and he is coming to meet you, and there are four hundred men with him.”
AKA: Please don’t kill me!
6 When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”
Jacob was scared and sure his brother was going to seek revenge! He thought the worst even though it was God that told him to return! Why fear what God has put in place! Expound….
Genesis 32:22–26 ESV
The same night he arose and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. He took them and sent them across the stream, and everything else that he had. And Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. Then he said, “Let me go, for the day has broken.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”
: 22That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions. 24So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. 25When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”
(Jacob is asking for the blessing the correct way! No deception! He is fighting for it!)
But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” (Jacob is asking for the blessing the correct way! No deception! He is fighting for it!)
Genesis 32:27–29 ESV
And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” Then he said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.” Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him.
Genesis 32:27-
27The man asked him, “What is your name?”
“Jacob,” he answered. (Makes him admit his name, the meaning.)
28Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,e because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”
29Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”
But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there.
God could defeat him easily, he’s trying to break his pride etc..
Jacobs struggle was never with his brother, father, father n law, mother or anyone else! His struggle was with God! Expound!
Limping is the effect of the struggle.. If you are not limping, your not fighting!
We walked in to this relationship with Jesus, We need to limp out!
