Brothers and sisters, I would like to begin with a reading from the book of Psalms:
English Standard Version Psalm 28
Blessed be the LORD!
For he has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy.
7 The LORD is my strength and my shield;
in him my heart trusts, and I am helped;
my heart exults,
and with my song I give thanks to him.
If you will read aloud with me as we continue:
English Standard Version Psalm 28
The LORD is the strength of his people;
he is the saving refuge of his anointed.
9 Oh, save your people and bless your heritage!
Be their shepherd and carry them forever.
Father God, Abba,
As we are gathered here today for this sad occasion; I would ask that you bring comfort and strength to the family members, friends, and classmates of this young person who’s life has come to such a sudden and tragic end. I pray that You will anoint me with your Spirit and speak your words through me, oh Lord. Guide me Lord, give me the strength, give me the words... I ask that the presence of our Comforter, Your Holy Spirit, will fill this room with his presence and touch our grieving hearts. Only You can heal our hearts Lord, You and only You know how. Dry our tears Lord; and give us the strength to rise above all obstacles, even tragedy such as this. I want to thank You right now; because I know that you are already here with us. You are always with us Lord, even now, at this very moment. If only we open our eye; we can see you everywhere, and in everything. Open our eyes Lord so that we can see You. Open our minds and hearts and bring the healing that only You can bring. Give us the peace that only you can give.
In the mighty name of Jesus Christ we pray, Amen
You may be seated.
As we gather here today we come to worship You. There is pain in our hearts. In some of our hearts there may even be anger, but in all of our hearts there is sorrow. Even so, we come to worship you; as we say goodbye to our loved one. We ask You for mercy. We know that You are our strength and our shield, our rock and redeemer. Be near to us Lord. We exult You Father. We ask that the presence of Your Holy Spirit be felt amongst us. I ask that you will anoint me and guide my words as we are gathered for this somber occasion. In the mighty name of Jesus we pray, Amen
You may be seated.
Our hearts are in Your hands, even as our lives are in your hands
Brothers and sisters, we are gathered here today to celebrate a life, and a light that burned brightly before us. As a candle that burns at both ends that light shone brightly. Also, like a candle that burns at both ends that light has gone out from amongst us much too quickly.
