Introduction

February 13, 2008. Ten years ago this year.
To the crowds outside, the waiting media, millions of Australians watching the event live, and those who had packed the gallery, the Prime Minister of Australia rose in Parliament and said the following words.
I move:
That today we honour the indigenous peoples of this land. . . We reflect on their past mistreatment. . . in particular on the mistreatment of those who were stolen generations - this blemished chapter in our nation's history.
The time has now come for the nation to turn a new page in Australia's history by righting the wrongs of the past and so moving forward with confidence to the future.
We apologise for the laws and policies of successive parliaments and governments that have inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss on these our fellow Australians.
We apologise especially for the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, their communities and their country.
For the pain, suffering and hurt of these stolen generations, their descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry.
To the mothers and the fathers, the brothers and the sisters, for the breaking up of families and communities, we say sorry.
And for the indignity and degradation thus inflicted on a proud people and a proud culture, we say sorry.
We the parliament of Australia respectfully request that this apology be received in the spirit in which it is offered as part of the healing of the nation.
It was the words that so many wanted to hear. Helen Moran, Aboriginal co-chair, National Sorry Day Committee summed up the feelings of most when she said.

I can remember feeling a wave of emotion that completely engulfed me, because he had cut to the core about the truth of our nation.
Even though these events happened before Kevin Rudd was in power, as an Australian he included himself. We have done wrong, we are sorry, we want to make things right, we want to see our nation healed.
Today I want to have a look at a story in the Bible were we also see someone acknowledging the wrong his nation has done in a powerful way. In so doing it was revealed to him someone who was coming who would put everything right.

The Bible is about Jesus

Today we are continuing our Daniel serious, Courageous Living in troubled times. But before we turn to the Book of want to remind you of the words of Jesus.
As we look into our text today we can see differences and simularities.
John 5:39 NIV
You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,
John 8:38 ESV
I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”
Jesus declares that the scripture, all scripture points to him. When he said these words there was no such thing as an New Testament, only what we know today as the old testament, and Jesus say this is all about him.
So as we look at this text and all the text we need to ask where we see Jesus.
And today’s text is a powerful example of this because it leads to a prophecy directly about him.
Turn with me to
Even when things get a little rough and prophecy is involved it still points to Jesus.
Revelation 1:1 ESV
The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John,
Today I want to look at an old testament prophecy that points to these words of Jesus
Mark 1:15 ESV
and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”

Daniel 9:1–3 NIV
In the first year of Darius son of Xerxes (a Mede by descent), who was made ruler over the Babylonian kingdom—in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the Lord given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years. So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes.

Daniel 9:1-3

Daniel was spending time with God. He was alone praying over an open Bible
As he was studying, he was reading prophecy in Jeremiah ().
He understood what this meant, he could see that the prophetic time was drawing near.
He was interpreting prophecy - he knew what it meant, he could see that the prophetic time was drawing near.
That drove him to his knees.
Should it do the same with us?
As Adventists, shouldn't we be found praying with our Bibles opened.
And as believers in the soon return of Jesus, don't we see the signs all around us, and we know Christs coming is very soon. In reference to dan 2, often hear that we are living in the toe nails.
In reference to dan 2, often hear that we are living in the toe nails. We see the signs of Christ return some of those listed in - as immenent.
We see the signs of Christ return some of those listed in - as imminent.
So if this is the case - shouldn't this do to us what it did to Daniel - drive us to our knees. Jesus is coming and he is coming again real soon. Let’s pray that we will be ready, and help to get others ready too.
Should this do to us what it did to Daniel - drive us to our knees. Jesus is coming and he is coming again real soon. Lets pray that we will be ready, and help to get other ready too.
With his people on his heart, Daniel begins to pray. And this powerful prayer leads to an amazing prophecy about when Jesus would appear on earth the first time.
A few weeks ago my parents were here, now Nadelle’s parents are here I have them to come an read to us Daniels prayer.
IA few weeks ago my parents were here, now Nadelle’s parents are here I have them to come an read to us Daniels prayer.
As you follow along and listen to this prayer - what strikes you about, what hits you about it.
The prayer.

The prayer.

A powerful prayer.
A powerful prayer.
Lets notice some of the themes
Themes about What God’s people have done
vs 5 - we have sinned and done wrong.
- we have been wicked and rebelled
vs 6 - We have not listened or obeyed
vs 7-8 we are covered in shame,
v15, 16. We have sinned, our sins have made Jerusalem and your people a laughing stock.
Daniel who is highly esteemed, acknowledges the sins that his nation as committed. He includes himself in this even though he doesn't have to.

He also freely acknowledges that that it is because of those sins that that is why they are in exile in Babylon.
our people are scattered . . because of our unfaithfulness to you. (v7)
we have sinned therefore curses written in the books of Moses have been poured out on us. (v11)
This is our fault he says, yet while at the same time acknowledging that God is blameless in all of this. He makes this very clear straight off the bat,

Look what he continues to say about God.
vs 4. God keeps his covenant - with those who love him and keep his commandments. (echos of ).
v7 Lord you are righteous
v7 Lord you are righteous
v 9 The Lord is merciful and forgiving
v12 You have fulfilled the words spoken to us
Perhaps this part of the prayer can be summarized in verse 14
Daniel 9:14 ESV
Therefore the Lord has kept ready the calamity and has brought it upon us, for the Lord our God is righteous in all the works that he has done, and we have not obeyed his voice.
“The Lord our God is righteous in everything he does; yet we have not obeyed him” v 14
You have not abandoned us . . . but we have abandoned you.
You have not abandoned us . . . but we have abandoned you.
It is interesting in the culture that we live in we often try to pass the buck, to blame someone else. Too often people in our time and culture would blame God for the situation that they find themselves in. Refugees, in exile, in a foreign land. Daniel knows better, he knows that God is faithful, but its his people who have not been. God said this would happen and it did.
But notice the last part of this prayer
In the series that we are looking at we
v7-8 - Lord you are righteous but we are covered in shame, our people are scattered . . because of our unfaithfulness to you
v9 Even though we have rebelled against him, the Lord our God is merciful and forgiving
v10 - we have not obeyed your laws, we have sinned therefore curses written in the books of Moses have been poured out on us.
v12 - you have done you said you would, disaster has come on us.
v13 - yet we have not turned from our sins, gave attention to your truth.
Daniel reminds God what he has done
you are the God who brought your people out of Egypt,
You have made a name for yourself.
Because you are righteous, listen, forgive, turn from your anger, hear and act.
Lord for your name sake, are you going to leave your city in ruins. God what will others think about you if you don't do something here.
What does this do for your reputation, what does this do to your name?
Lord to protect your name, you need to do something here.ke.
made yourself a name that endures to this day, but we sinned.
v16 - Because you are righteous turn away from your anger, our sins have made Jerusalem and your people a laughing stock.
Combined with confession, and asking for forgiveness, It seems God loves those bold prayers.
v17 Hear our prayer and petition, look with favour on your desolate sanctuary.
Are you bold in your prayers?
Look at the desolation of the city that bears your name.
William Shea in the Bible Amplifier states
We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy,
Lord Listen! Lord forgive! Lord hear and act! For your sake, my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name.

I Love how this prayer is very repentant, Daniel acknowledges that he and his people have done wrong, but it is also very direct.
The Language with which Daniel closes his prayer indicates the earnestness of his feelings. His words breathe with the intensity of his desire. . . Too often our prayers are offered up in a listless fashion with much repetition and hackneyed phrases. Like Daniels prayer they ought to breathe with an intensity of interest. Daniels prayer was no sleepy repetition of standard, trite phrases. This was a prayer into which Daniel immersed himself with emotional intensity. If we prayed in a similar way, we would no doubt see more answers to our prayers because we would be demonstrating to God that we are serious about what we are praying for.

LESSON - Pour out our heart to God, confess our sins
Daniel asked God to act . . and that is exactly what God does.
Be bold with God in prayer. What does this do for your reputation, what does this do to your name.
Where do you need to confess. Where do you need to put up your hand and ask for forgiveness of God? In what areas do you need to pray boldly?
Remember the first words of Jesus Repent and beleive the good news.
As a result of this prayer and this prophecy great news is coming.
Dan 9:20-
As soon as you began to pray
LESSON - Daniels prayer teaches us to pour out our hear to God, to confess our sins, but it also teaches us to to be bold with God in prayer.
Daniel 9:20–23 NIV
While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel and making my request to the Lord my God for his holy hill—while I was still in prayer, Gabriel, the man I had seen in the earlier vision, came to me in swift flight about the time of the evening sacrifice. He instructed me and said to me, “Daniel, I have now come to give you insight and understanding. As soon as you began to pray, a word went out, which I have come to tell you, for you are highly esteemed. Therefore, consider the word and understand the vision:
* As soon as you began to pray - God acts. Today this might be all you need to know. AS Soon as you begin to pray - GOD acts. he sends his angels on a mission.
Did you get that . . . as soon as you began to pray - God acts. Today this might be all you need to know. As Soon as you begin to pray - GOD acts. Here he sends his head angel on a mission.
As soon as you began to pray - God acts. Today this might be all you need to know. AS Soon as you begin to pray - GOD acts. he sends his angels on a mission.
Friends never forget the power of prayer.
James tells us that prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
John Knox was a reformer who was known for his preaching and his prayers, Mary Queen of Scots, a powerful head of state once said “ I fear the prayers of John Knox more than all the armies of England”
Mary Queen of Scots was a powerful head of state. Yet she once said “ I fear the prayers of John Knox more than all the armies of England”
>
Mary Queen of Scotts was a powerful Catholic head of state. Yet she once said “I fear the prayers of John Knox more than the army of ten thousand men!”
Pray is powerful, wouldn't it be great if your neighbors, if our community knew you, knew us as a praying church
But there is something else here. The angel came to tell Daniel about the vision.
But there is something else here. The angel came to tell Daniel about the vision.
But there is something else here. The angel came to tell Daniel about the vision.
What vision is this?
The last vision we see is actually in Chapter 8.

There is no vision in chap. 9, so this refers to the vision in chap. 8. More precisely, the Hebrew word for “vision” here is the one used in 8:26 for the conversation that speaks of the 2,300 days (8:13–14), which had particularly perplexed Daniel (8:27). Gabriel had come to explain this time element in order to relieve his distress over the apparent conflict between the 70 years of Jeremiah and the 2,300 days of his own vision.

You remember last week we mentioned briefly and Ram and a Goat that was parallel to a couple of the beasts in , we are told what they are in verse 20-21
You remember last week we mentioned briefly and Ram and a Goat that was parallel to a couple of the beasts in , we are told what they are in verse 20-21
Dan 8:20
Daniel 8:20–21 NIV
The two-horned ram that you saw represents the kings of Media and Persia. The shaggy goat is the king of Greece, and the large horn between its eyes is the first king.
So we know that, this part of the vision we understood. But there was another part of the vision that greatly troubled Daniel
verse 9-12
* talks of a power that would reach the host of the heaven, and throw some of the stars to earth and trample on them. v 10
* It would set itself up as a great commander, but would take away the daily sacrifice from the Lord, and throw his sanctuary down.
* It would be prosperous and also throw truth to the ground.
Then in Vision Daniel overhears the following conversation
Daniel 8:13–14 NIV
Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to him, “How long will it take for the vision to be fulfilled—the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes desolation, the surrender of the sanctuary and the trampling underfoot of the Lord’s people?” He said to me, “It will take 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary will be reconsecrated.”
Daniel 8
What does this all mean?
What does this all mean?
Daniel 8:26–27 NIV
“The vision of the evenings and mornings that has been given you is true, but seal up the vision, for it concerns the distant future.” I, Daniel, was worn out. I lay exhausted for several days. Then I got up and went about the king’s business. I was appalled by the vision; it was beyond understanding.
You think this worried Daniel - absolutely. And it is this part of the vision (the same Hebrew word is used in both texts) that Gabriel had come to explain.
It is interesting that the word for “vision” here, is the same word that Gabriel uses to tell Daniel what he has come to explain.
Dan 8:2
Gabriel had come to explain and to relieve Daniels distress over the apparent conflict between the 70 years of Jeremiah, and the 2,300 days of his own vision.
In fact the Hebrew word for “vision” here, is the same word that Gabriel uses to tell Daniel what he has come to explain.
You think this worried Daniel - absolutely.
Daniel 8:28-29
So after spending intense time in prayer. Praying for his people, praying for his city, the angel comes and says consider the word - (is this what he was reading) and ALSO consider the vision. . . Gabriel tells him the following.
In his answer Gabriel assured Daniel that his prayer for the deliverance of the people would be answered. The Hebrews would return to their land. They would rebuild the temple, and they would reconstruct the city. But he also points to the future of God’s people beyond these initial events, and points to the
But Gabriel went on to tell Daniel more about the future of God’s people beyond these initiall events.
Daniel 9:24 NIV
“Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place.
Six actions would take place here and they come in three pairs.
The first pair is addressed especially to Judah and describes what they were to a
to finish transgression - or to stop rebelling against God
to put an end to sin - the phrase here means to to miss the mark, the goal, or standard which God has set up.
Thus, Gabriel charges the Jewish people with the responsibility of putting away sin and developing a righteous society. Like the ancient Isreal in the wilderness, they were to purify the camp in order to prepare conditions which would be right for the Messiah to come.
The second pair describes the actions that God would take upon himself as His own responsibility.
to finish transgression

ccomplish
The first pair is addressed especially to Judah and describes what they were to accomplish withi this time fraame of 70 weeks.
3. To atone for wickedness and
To finish transgression
4. to bring in everlasting righteousness.
Atonement is Hebrew sanctuary language. The slaughtering of an animal would represent the atonement of sins. The problem was if another sin was committed, another animal would have to be killed. It was temporary. BUT what this looked forward to was one great final atonement, one that is permanent and everlasting. That can only point to the sacrifice of Jesus and the righteousness that is available to us that continues to flow to this day. The prophecy that Gabriel is about to explain is all about Jesus.
The last pair of events in verse 24 are the results of the first actions.
5. to seal up vision and prophecy - this can be seen in the sense of confirming or ratifying the vision.
6. and to anoint the Most Holy Place. - showing again that there is a connection with the vision of .
as the book of Hebrews points out, there was a problem with the old system. the problem with the
But Gabriel went on to tell Daniel more about the future of God’s people beyond these initiall events.
So all of this was to happen and as we read on we see that Jerusalem would be rebuilt as well, but the beginning of the text sets the time frame of 70 weeks or seven sevens.
The problem is that 70 literal weeks, or 490 days is not enough time to have all this fulfilled, especially when we see the next verse also talks about the rebuilding of Jerusalem.
The problem is that 70 literal weeks is not enough time to have all this fulfilled, especially when we see the next verse also talks about the rebuilding of Jerusalem.
But when it comes to Bible prophecy - there is a key to the code.
Forty days I assign you, a day for each year.
also tells us that we can apply a day for a year.
Ezra 4:6 ESV
And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
Forty days I assign you, a day for each year.
Numbers 14:34 ESV
According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.’
Numbers 14:34
The Jews were given 70 weeks 70 sevens (490 days) to repent. that equals 490 years.
So what we are looking at hear is that all this is to take place within 490 years.
Must bee longer than weeks because of all that happens here - not enough time to rebuild the temple and the city..
E
Ezekiel 4:6 ESV
And when you have completed these, you shall lie down a second time, but on your right side, and bear the punishment of the house of Judah. Forty days I assign you, a day for each year.

Daniel so appaled because 2300 years.

focuses specifically on the people of God.
Daniel 9:25 ESV
Know therefore and understand that from the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem to the coming of an anointed one, a prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again with squares and moat, but in a troubled time.
Daniel 9:24 NIV
“Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place.
verse 24 seventy sevens are decreed for your people. “determined for your people” more literally cut off.
Opening summary of what will happen in this time.
Unpack prophecy in .
Therefore all this was to happen within (70 x 7 =) 490 years.
Daniels prayer was all about repentance.
The Jews were given 70 weeks 70 sevens (490 days) to repent.
So when did this time period start?
In Bible prophecy a day equals a year.
So when did this time period start?
Daniel 9:25 NIV
“Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble.
The starting point of this prophecy was a command allowing the Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild their city. This decree, made by King Artaxerxes, is found in and it has been verified in numerous ways.
In fact Sir Isaac Newton who studied this prophecy intently said
“The years of Artaxerxes reign are among the most easily established dates of history. The Canon of Ptolemy . . . the Greek Olympiads, and allusions in Greek history to Persian affairs all combine to place the seventh year of Artaxerxes at 457BC.”
Knowing this we can put the rest of the puzzle together.
Remember what the text says
“Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem (we know now that this is 457BC)
until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, - Your translation may say until Messiah the Prince comes. (Wow hang on is this really going to tell people exactly when the Messiah would arrive! Yep that is exactly what it does.
there will be seven ‘sevens,’ that equals 49 years and we see that 49 years after the decree to rebuild Jerusalem, in 408BC the city was completed. But the text continues
and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ This would equal another 434 years. Remembering that there is no year simple maths take us to the year 27AD.
According to this prophecy the Messiah would arrive, or be anointed in 27AD. So what happened in that year?
and sixty-two ‘sevens.’
there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’
Roman Historical records and Biblical account confirm that this was the year that Jesus was baptized. And at his baptism you will remember he was anointed by the Holy Spirit.
This is an amazing prophecy, it shows us that Jesus came right on time. He came exactly when it was prophesied he would.
Jesus himself knew it, immediately after his baptism he said
Mark 1:14–15 ESV
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
The time has come, or the time has been fulfilled He was talking about this prophecy here.
Mark 1:14–15 ESV
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
It starts in 457 BC then 7 x 7 later 49 years later
- it began when the command to rebuild Jerusalem (the city that Daniel was just praying over)
The time has come, or the time has been fulfilled He was talking about this prophecy here.
WOW - but the text continues
Daniel 9:26 NIV
After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed.
This would have been very distressing to Daniel.
Here he learns first of all that the Messiah the anointed one, the one that every Jew was waiting for, had hoped for - He would be put to death was going to be killed. Daniel would have wondered how on earth this would be possible. 200 years later we still marvel at the cross. That Jesus Christ would come to die for us. That is what this is pointing to .
This verse also tells us that the Messiah would have nothing, perhaps a better way to translate this is “NO ONE SHALL BE FOR HIM”.
Notice the Anointed one or the Messiah the Prince is mentioned.
Hang on this is abot Jesus - it is also about when he was to come.
I am reminded of another prophets words when Isaiah says about Jesus, He was despised and rejected by mankind. He we see this prophesied again.
All of a sudden this is getting interesting. eed to find out whe this starts.
And, even after this extend probation time, his own people would reject him. And the result of this is what the text is talking about at the end here, It is describing the destruction of Jerusalem.
. - picture from study Bible. 457.
Sir Isaac Newton a big fan of this prophecy he states.
And, even after this extend probation time, his own people would reject him. And the result of this is what the text is talking about at the end here, It is describing the destruction of Jerusalem.
Now that we have the starting point - the starting date the rest just all fits into place.
Decree to rebuild Jerusalem.
Finally says “He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering”
The messiah coming - anointed one - when was Jesus anointed?
Finally says “He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering”
At his baptsim
What did Jesus say immediately after this - the time has come. (This time is fulfilled.
After 62 7s the Messiah shall be cut off / put to death.
He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering
Daniel 9:27 NIV
He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.”
The middle of this last week is three and a half years after the coming of the Messiah. This would bring us to 31AD - right on time according to Bible prophecy, When Jesus died the curtain in the temple was miraculously ripped from top to bottom. This symbolized the end to animal sacrifices exactly as the Bible predicted. In the temple service the Passover lamb was sacrificed once a year on a specific day and at a specific time. As the priests were preparing to kill the passover lamb, Jesus was dying on a lonely cross. On that dark afternoon, prophecy was fulfilled as “Christ our Passover was sacrificed for us.”
Right at the beginning we said that Scriptures point us to Jesus. We see it clearly here that this is the case. It points us to Jesus and the sacrifice that he would make.
But Daniel was also concerned about his people - what would happen to them?
Here he sees that God is good for his promise
He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering
We see it clearly here that this is the case.
* The prophecy shows that the Jews would return to their homeland
The end of the 70 weeks brings us to the year AD 34
For Daniel got a glimpse of what Jesus would do.
For Daniel got a glimpse of what Jesus would do.
Daniel 9:27 ESV
And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.”

In A.D. 34, the end of the final seven years, the Jewish national council rejected the gospel and martyred Stephen (Acts 7). A great persecution arose against the Christians and scattered them (Acts 8:1). Thus, the gospel went to the Gentiles, so that they could become Christians without first becoming Jews (Acts 10–11, 13–15). on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate. The Hebrew word used here for “abominations” refers to idolatry, which is a serious form of rebellion against God (compare Deut. 29:17; 2 Kin. 23:24). The idea of making desolate points beyond Imperial Rome and its destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70 to the devastation caused by the religious phase of the little horn power in the latter part of the 2,300 years (Dan. 8:11–13—“transgression of desolation”; compare 11:31; 12:11—“abomination of desolation”). The little horn sets up a form of idolatry or false sacrifice to replace the function of the earthly sacrificial system that Christ brought to an end. So after the end of the 490 years, the explanation in Dan. 9:27 ties in to the rest of the vision of chap. 8. This reinforces the fact that the 490 years are the first part of the 2,300 years.

This pointed to the fact that Jesus would die. - Mind blowing stuff
It even pointed out when he would die,
- IN the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
How would he do this? - by his own death - the perfect sacrifice of the son of God.
When in the middle 3 and a half years AD 31 right on time.
This points to Jesus. The message for the kingdom is to go forth.
This points to Jesus. The message for the kingdom is to go forth.
This news had to go out to others.
Jesus told his disciple to go first to the lost sheep of the house of Isreal. (to the Jews tell them this good news).
Even after His death, Jesus told His disciples to begin their ministry at Jerusalem. He had not given up on the people of Jerusalem. There was still time, if they would accept Jesus, the resurrected Messiah.”
* That Jerusalem would be rebuilt,
Dan 9
Daniel 9:25–27 ESV
Know therefore and understand that from the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem to the coming of an anointed one, a prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again with squares and moat, but in a troubled time. And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall be cut off and shall have nothing. And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end shall come with a flood, and to the end there shall be war. Desolations are decreed. And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.”
* that they would be given another chance - a 490 year probation.
Importance of repenting and staying in a relationship with Jesus.
But they would blow it again so much so that they would kill and reject God’s own Son. The would also reject those who followed after him.
The end of the 70 weeks brings us to the year AD 34. In that year, three and a half years since Jesus died on the cross, Stephen was martyred.
Daniel was an aged warrior for God. He was almost 90 years old at this time. One might think he was of little usefulness to God at such an age. On the contrary, he was still “highly esteemed. This should give encouragement to those who are advanced in years. God still takes care of the elderly and cares for them. He holds us each in high esteem; we are greatly beloved by the God of the Universe!
When Stephen was killed by the Jewish religious leaders, he became the first Christian martyr.
this was the end for the Jewish nation.
The Bible records that this event scattered the believers, but as they went they took the good news of Jesus with them.
When God saw what the Jewish leaders did to the leadership of his emerging church, he must have said in his heart enough is enough. Go now and preach the gospel to the gentiles. Because the Jewish nation hardened themselves against the longsuffering, love of their God, the prophecy was over.
Hebrew word hatak - means “to cut”.
Go now and preach the gospel to the gentiles. Because the Jewish nation hardened themselves against the longsuffering, love of their God, the prophecy was over.
The result for the Jews was the destruction of their nation and their city Jerusalem. That is what some of this prophecy also talks about.
There 70 weeks are to be cut off for the Jewish people - cut off from what?

determined. This word appears only here in the Hebrew Bible. But in rabbinic writings its basic meaning is to “cut off” from something longer, and this can be an expression for “determined.” In this verse, both the basic and extended meanings would apply: The 490 years are “cut off” from the longer unit of 2,300 “days” = years (8:14), and this period of 490 years is “determined” for the Jewish people and the holy city of Jerusalem. “Determined” means that it applies especially to them. Daniel was concerned about the fate of his people, their city, and the temple during the 2,300 “days,” and here is the answer.

But the results for the human race - The gospel is now for everyone. It is to go for the world.
verse 24 seventy sevens are decreed for your people. “determined for your people” more literally cut off.
Galatians 3:29 NIV
If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
Must bee longer than weeks because of all that happens here - not enough time to rebuild the temple and the city..
Daniels people became a whole lot larger than he could ever imagine. There would extend to the time when God’s people would mean anyone who is in Christ.
focuses specifically on the people of God.
Daniels people became a whole lot larger than he could ever imagine. There would extend to the time when God’s people would mean anyone who is in Christ.
This prophecy points us to Jesus and his sacrifice that he made for us. It points to an invitation today to get to know him better, to accept what he has done, to accept the gospel and in doing so become a part of His Royal people.
This is possible because of Jesus.
O and remember, how we said this prophecy ties in with the previous one. This gives us the starting point to work out the time line of the longest prophecy in the Bible. Simple maths (457 plus 2300 years) tells us that it points to a time a great spiritual awakening and revival and interest in the second coming of Jesus in the 1800’s. Again it point us to Jesus, who is pictured as our high priest in heaven.
Again it invites us to make a decision to belong, or to be in Him.
Again it invites us to make a decision to belong
This prophecy points us to Jesus and his sacrifice that he made for us. It points to an invitation today to get to know him better, to accept what he has done, to accpt the gospel.
We were to learn about Jesus and what he has done. And by tying this in with the previous prophecy it not only tells us that Jesus is our saviors he is also our high priest in heaven.
verse 24 seventy sevens are decreed for your people. “determined for your people” more literally cut off.
Opening summary of what will happen in this time.
And again it should drive us to our knees. The longest time prophecy in the Bible has finished, we know what is coming next - it is time to say yes to the one this prophecy points to. Yes to Jesus.

Daniel confessed his sins - this prophecy pointed to the one who takes away those sins.
It points us to the one who is faithful.
Showed God is faithful even to the death on a cross.
Daniel was worried about God’s actions would do to Gods name.
In sending his son, he received A name above all names.
Because fo Jesus, his sacrifice and the fac that he is now our high priest in heaven - he received a name above all names.
You want hope Daniel?
Do you want hope today?
It is found in nothing less that In Christ alone.
That’s where forgiveness
In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song This Cornerstone, this solid Ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace When fears are stilled, when strivings cease My Comforter, my All in All Here in the love of Christ I stand.
You want hope Daniel? It is found in Christ alone!

The last part of this verse, is poorly translated by the NIV, but it again shows the consequence of the rejection of Jesus by the Jews. The ESV translates this better as
There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain: Then bursting forth in glorious day Up from the grave He rose again And as He stands in victory Sin's curse has lost its grip on me, For I am His and He is mine Bought with the precious blood of Christ No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the power of Christ in me From life's first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand Till He returns or calls me home Here in the power of Christ I'll stand
