Rooted Families

Colossians 2:6–14 ESV
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. 8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. 9 For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. 11 In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
colossians 2:6-14

I. RECEIVE CHRIST

A. Receive vs Believe
John 1:
John 1:11–13 ESV
11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
James 2:19 ESV
19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!
James 2:
Do we receive Jesus in the same way we receive unwanted guests, hoping they will leave soon?
We must receive Jesus
Do we receive Jesus in the same way we approve followers on social media, we don’t really know them or care about them, but it will increase you following
Do we receive Jesus the way we receive good counsel, it sounds great, but I think I will try things my way?
A faith that doesn’t change probably can’t save you.

II. WALK IN CHRIST

A. You have been filled with Jesus
Col 2:
Colossians 2:8–9 ESV
8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. 9 For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,
Colossians 2:9–10 ESV
9 For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.
Colossians 2:9 ESV
9 For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,
Colossians 2:9
Colossians 2:
Philippians 4:
Philippians 4:8–9 ESV
8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
B. You have been made alive in Him
Colossians 2:13 ESV
13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,
Colossians 2:
B. Take every thought captive.
2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV
5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,
2 Corinthians 10:5

III. ROOTED AND BUILT UP

1 Peter 2:4–5 ESV
4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 2:5 ESV
5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 2:5
A. Your body is a dwelling place for the Holy Spirit.
B. You are to lead your family in prayer, worship, and growing up in the faith.
C. You are to be a living sacrifice, which is your reasonable act of service.

IV. “The God of your fathers...”

There were times when a prophet of God was given a message to give to God’s people, it would include the phrase something like this. Tell the people “the God of their fathers has sent you” That would remind the jewish people of the the One true God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and they would listen. They would remember the stories passed down from generation to generation of the times God was faithful and had saved them.
If your children heard the phrase “the God of your father” would it remind them of Jesus or would it remind them of your misplaced passions?
A father rooted in Christ, sold out to Christ, will build strong families established in Jesus.
