John 10:11–18 ESV
11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”
John 15:1–7 ESV
1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

Introduction

The ultimate foundation of the Christian life is the believer’s union and communion with Christ this is where we get the central truth of the metaphor and the vine and the branches. Throughout Scripture it is clear that Christ is the center of all in the life of a believer.

I. The vine 15:1

I. The vine 15:1
John 15:1 CSB
1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.

A. I am the true vine v.1
A. I am the true vine,
This vine analogy is a grape vine, Jesus is the Source of Life and the way to eternal life
B. my Father is the gardener
The gardener cultivates and protects a vine v.1
I. The Hired hand v. 11-13

II. The good Shepard 14-

II. The Pruning 15:2-3

John 15:2–3 CSB
2 Every branch in me that does not produce fruit he removes, and he prunes every branch that produces fruit so that it will produce more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.

A. Removal of unfruitful branches v.2a (Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away)
John 15:2 ESV
2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
John 15:2a ESV
2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

Each disciple of Christ is a branch, this is another reason Christ uses this analogy.
Every Christian is a disciple of Christ.
This in no wise is saying that salvation can be lost but that one who acts like a christian but is not will be removed. We will look at this in more depth in a little bit.

B. Pruning of Fruitful Branches. v2b (every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.)
John 15:2 ESV
2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

This is the idea of being more Christlike, for each of us our goal should be to become more like christ christ
The father prunes us to be more like his son an through such we bear more fruit.

C. You are clean. v3 (every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.)
John 15:3 ESV
3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.
Jphn 15:3

Jesus is telling all this to his deciples after Judas had left so what he is telling them is you eleven are clean.

III. The association 15:4-7

John 5:4–7 ESV
5 One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” 7 The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.”
John 15:4–7 CSB
4 Remain in me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me. 6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown aside like a branch and he withers. They gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you.
John 15

4A. Remain im me V.4
John 15:4 CSB
4 Remain in me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me.

Fruitfulness is the result of Christ’s life being reproduced in a disciple.
a. What about remain

The word remain is key here, what does it mean?
Some argue that this is a reference to loss of salvation, but it is not. The idea here is to continue in perseverance of believing
6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” 7 The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.”.
Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself
John 8:31 CSB
31 Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you continue in my word, you really are my disciples.

It is in no way saying you can lose salvation, but rather that you were never saved to begin with.
Remember this is after Judas had left, He acted as a disciple for all that time, but he was not one. He was a fraud
Likewise, there are Christians that say and do all the right things, but they are not truly Christians they are a fraud
So what Christ is saying here is to abide in my, do not be a fraud
Don’t cause this to doubt your salvation, if you doubt you are likely saved it is the ones who are hypocrites and just put on the face for church that should be concerned because they are not abiding in him.

unless it remains on the vine
neither can you unless you remain in me

A. 5 I am the vine;
John 15:5 CSB
5 I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me.

Again Christ reminds that He is the vine and we are the Branches
A grape vine is the source of life for the branches, this is who Jesus is the main vine the source of life.
Throughout life there are many things in which we think give us life, pleasure and enjoyment. however it is Christ and Christ alone that gives us life.

B. you are the branches.
The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit
because you can do nothing without me.

B. They are Burned v.6
John 15:6 CSB
6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown aside like a branch and he withers. They gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned.

6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown aside like a branch and he withers.

They gather them,
thrown into the fire, and burned.
throw them into the fire, and they are burned.
a. What does it mean to be burned?
What does it mean to be burned? There are three primary interpretations, one of which is correct

1. The burned branches are Christians who have lost their salvation.
This contradicts many passages, so this interpretation is wrong
John 3:16 CSB
16 For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:36 CSB
36 The one who believes in the Son has eternal life, but the one who rejects the Son will not see life; instead, the wrath of God remains on him.

John 5:24 CSB
24 “Truly I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life.

John 10:28–29 CSB
28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
John 10
Romans 8:1 CSB
1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus,

The burned branches are Christians who have lost their salvation. This contradicts many passages, so this interpretation is wrong
2. burned branches represent Christians who will lose rewards but not salvation at the judgement seat of Christ.
burned brances represent Christians who will lose rewards but not salvation at the judgement seat of Christ (however Ajesues is speeking of dead branches)
(however Jesus is speaking of dead branches meaning totally dead needs to be gotten rid of.)
The burned branches refer to professing Christians who, like Judas are not geuinely saved and therfore are judged like a dead branch a person without christ is spiritual dead and therfore will be punished in eternal fire jesues was with JZesues he seemed like a branch but he did not have God’s life in Him therfore he departed and his desteny was like that of a dead branch.
3. The burned branches refer to professing Christians who, like Judas are not genuinely saved and therefore are judged like a dead branch.
a person without Christ is spiritual dead and therefore will be punished in eternal fire.
Judues was with Jesus he seemed like a branch, but he did not have God’s life in Him therefore he departed, and his destiny was like that of a dead branch.

B. You will Bear fruit
John 15:7 ESV
7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

and my words remain in you
the final verse offers the challenge that if you remain in christ you will bear much fruit.
ask whatever you want and it will be done for you.
and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.
