Today we are going to take to look at 3 key aspects necessary for Salvation and continued Christian living.
We must know
Who You Were, or for some of you Who You Are
What He (Jesus) Did
Who You Are, or Who You Can Be
Lets start by talking a look at who we were, or again, who you are apart from Christ.
Who You Were / Who You Are
Who You Were / Who You Are
1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Who We Were / Who You Are
Paul is speaking to those that are quickened, or made alive. But first he will reflect on what it was like before Jesus made us alive. For some of you today, very well may be in this current state of spiritual deadness.
Dead in trespasses and sins
Dead in trespasses and sins
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Our sin separates us from God. Because of sin we are spiritually dead.
Being spiritually dead, lost man is not able to recognize the power that is at work behind the scenes.
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
Because of our sin we are after
Ephesians 2:2-3
After our father the devil
After our father the devil
After your father the devil
After your father the devil
After our father the devil
After our father the devil
Because of our sin we are after our father the devil
The natural inclination of mankind is to be like their father. This is no different on the spiritual level.
John
44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
Breakdown first line
Walked = to be occupied with, life
course of this world = world system, practices and standards of those without God
What verse two is saying is that lost man is occupied with living their life in accordance with the practices and standers of the world system.
They are lead astray by the prince of the power of the air and are chewed up and spit out, left for dead.
Quick bible study, the prince of the power of the air is the Devil
31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.
J
We must not be ignorant, Satan is in power here on earth and he wants nothing more than to destroy us. He Hates You
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
Satan has set up a world system that caters to our selfish desires, he knows our vices and is doing everything in his power to exploit it.
the power behind unbelievers
He is the spirit that is working in those that reject or refuse to believe the gospel
3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
Walked after the lust of OUR flesh (differentiates between the devil and flesh two different things)
Walked after the lust of OUR flesh (differentiates between the devil and flesh two different things)
Walked after the lust of OUR flesh
Walked after the lust of OUR flesh
We used to walk after the lust of OUR flesh
We used to walk after the lust of OUR flesh
t and flesh two different things)
t and flesh two different things)
Doing what we please in the flesh
Conversation = how you conduct yourselves
We used to live according to the lusts of our flesh, doing whatever felt good.
I don’t know about you but my flesh does not crave things that are good for me.
lays out a list of fleshly desires that the lost world live out without second thought
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Galatians 5:19-
We were children of wrath
The wrath of God resides upon the lost
10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:
11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
There is coming a day when the wrath of a Holy Righteous God will be poured out on humanity. He has held off for thousands of years, but the day is rapidly approaching when He will say, that is it. I’ve had enough
Fortunately for lost man verses 4-7 changes everything.
The wrath of God resides on us
What He Did
What He Did
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
Ephesians 2:
He loved us with His rich mercy
He loved us with His rich mercy
This literally means that God has invited us to a feast of love, he demonstrated this on the cross.
We are invited to commune with the God of the universe.
He is rich in mercy. Quick to forgive and redeem
8 The Lord is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.
9 He will not always chide: Neither will he keep his anger for ever.
10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, So great is his mercy toward them that fear him.
12 As far as the east is from the west, So far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
Psalm 1
Not only is He merciful and loving, but he does so in the midst of our sin
Not only is He merciful and loving, but he does so in the midst of our sin
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
Jesus descended from on hight to a place of muck and mire. He came down from heaven to pull us up out of our sin.
He made us alive through Jesus (by his grace), raising us up from the dead and placed us in a heavenly seat.
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
This is incredible, in exchange for my sin I get to become the very righteousness of God through Christ.
He raised us up from the dead
He raised us up from the dead
Placed us in a place of honor
He literally exchanges my wickedness for his righteousness.
Showing his kindness and the exceeding riches of his grace in the process
Now I am able to be accepted in the eyes of God.
The blood of Jesus covers our sin and makes us clean in His sight.
This is the best news ever.
Without Jesus we am helpless and hopeless
Believe it or not, it still gets better from here.
Not only do I get to exchange my sin for His righteousness, but I also don’t have to do anything physically to receive it.
I’ll explain what I mean
Who You Are / Who You Can Be
Who You Are / Who You Can Be
(Saved by grace through faith)
(Saved by grace through faith)
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Our salvation is of God, not of our works.
Our salvation is of God, not of our works.
Salvation comes as a gift from God.
Gifts are free of charge. This means it cost us nothing. We do not have to work for it.
This gift is given to us by the grace of God.
This grace is undeserved. Remember this is all given to us when we are dead in our sin.
And the salvation is through faith in Jesus’ work on the cross. The death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
This salvation is not based on what I can do. It is based on what He did.
The freedom to be found in this statement “not of works,”
Praise God we don’t have to earn God’s favor. In Jesus we become favored by God.
I do not have to prove my worth to God. In Christ I am worthy
I do not have to do tricks for God. In Christ I am worthy
I do not have to out perform others for God. In Christ I am worth
No matter what you have done or where you have been, in Jesus you are worthy
We have nothing to boast in apart from Jesus
He then goes on to explain what this means for our life. We are fundamentally changed.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
Now that God has done the redemptive work in your heart, this is where God begins to really do a work.
Salvation was not merely to get us into heaven.
God saved us so that we would be conformed to the image of Jesus.
We are saved so that we can manifest Jesus to the lost world. We are to continue the work He started.
Moulded into His Image
Moulded into His Image
9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
Salvation changes everything about you
Ephesians 8:9
Ephesians 8:9
9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
We are saved so that we can manifest Jesus to the lost.
When God does this work in us through His son, we become something brand new.
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
No longer will we have to do
We walk in the good works because of what he has done
God wants us to come to Him just as we are. Because once He does a work in us, if we allow Him to, he will make us into ministers that do good works for the sake of the Kingdom. Not because we are trying to earn His approval, but because He has supernaturally changed us from the inside out
We walk in the good works because of what he has done
In closing
We have looked at 3 key aspects of Salvation and continued Christian life.
I believe we must remind ourselves daily each.
Who We Were / or Who You Currently Are apart from Jesus. We are helpless and hopeless, completely separated from God because of our inadequacies and shortcomings.
What He Did God loved us regardless of our failures by sending Jesus to pay the price for our shortcomings on the cross.
And finally, Who We Are / or Who You Can Be We have been given the opportunity be be saved without having to earn Gods favor, which will ultimately lead us to good works that allow us to reach the world for Christ.
