1 John 3:11 ESV
For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
Verse 11 – For this is the message that we heard from the beginning (love each other)
Verse 11 – For this is the message that we heard from the beginning (love each other)
o From the beginning >>>> That we should love one another.
This truth is foundational
This should show us how far we have fallen.
This should show us how far we have fallen.
We are comfortable living with conflict and brokenness in the church and yet it is FOUNDATIONAL that we MUST love each other.
- “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”
This should show us how far we have fallen.
We are comfortable living with conflict and brokenness in the church and yet it is foundational that we must love each other.
1 John 3:12 ESV
We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother’s righteous.
1 John
(verse 12) Don’t be like Cain who murdered his brother
(verse 12) Don’t be like Cain who murdered his brother
o
We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother’s righteous ESV
I think we can all get behind this one…
We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother’s righteous ESV
The important question is “Why did Cain murder his brother?”
We understand physical sin
Need to remember sin begin in the heart.
We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother’s righteous. ESV
· John uses Cain and Able as illustrations of
o A “Brother” who is actually of the world vs. Brother who is of God (righteous)
o Diametrically opposed to each other (Don’t be surprised that the world hates you)
1 John 3:14 ESV
We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death.
1 John 3:!4
Evidence of our salvation marked by love for other Christians (see verse 10)
· Evidence of our salvation marked by love for other Christians (see verse 10)
Whoever doesn’t love abides in death
o Cain represent the “brother” who actually is of the world (abides in death)
All of this leads up to this powerful statement!!!!
1 John 3:15 ESV
Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
1 john 3:15
· What does righteousness men to you.
Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. 1 ESV
· What does righteousness men to you.
o Being like Christ
o Knowing Gods word
o Overcoming sin
· COMPLETE biblical definition of righteousness
o How well do you LOVE your brother?
That’s why the story of Cain so valuable
o Cain was of the world
o (therefore) he allowed bitterness to take hold of his heart
o That bitterness lead to death
“Well I might not like some Christians but not going to murder.”
If your bitterness leads to hate – You are already guilty of murder!!!
By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. ESV
By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. ESV
· Both about sacrificial love
· Both about loving those who don’t deserve it
· As Christians we should have the same love for each other that was given to us.
· How is this love defined?
o Be willing to lay down our lives for the benefit of others
When a person puts their faith in Christ, the change in them should be so foundational that it should be evident in two areas of their life, how they practice righteous living and how they love other Christians.
