All the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain surrounded by smoke. When the people saw it they trembled and stood at a distance.
“You speak to us, and we will listen,” they said to Moses, “but don’t let God speak to us, or we will die.”
Moses responded to the people, “Don’t be afraid, for God has come to test you, so that you will fear him and will not sin.”
And the people remained standing at a distance as Moses approached the total darkness where God was.
The Ten Commandments should leave us fearful.
The Ten Commandments should leave us fearful.

There is a rightful place to understand the power and holiness of God.

Illus: How many times do we look at the emotion of fear and think it is unhealthy.
We tell our children not to be afraid at night.
We look at fear as if it is a lack of courage or internal strength.
There is irrational fear, and there is healthy fear.
Healthy fear is standing on the edge of a razor sharp cliff and understanding that if you slip you will die.
Healthy fear is understanding the power that a gun holds, and using it with the care and safety it deserves.
We are called to a healthy fear of God.
We should rightly understand the holiness, majesty, power and justice of God.
When we sin, we should tremble understanding What should happen if God gave us what we deserve.
We fear God because we come to rightly understand who God is, and also what we deserve from God.

6 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, and the hem of his robe filled the temple. 2 Seraphim were standing above him; they each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. 3 And one called to another:

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Armies;
his glory fills the whole earth.
4 The foundations of the doorways shook at the sound of their voices, and the temple was filled with smoke.
5 Then I said:
Woe is me for I am ruined
because I am a man of unclean lips
and live among a people of unclean lips,
and because my eyes have seen the King,
the Lord of Armies.
When you understand the holy character of God, you come to understand how completely unholy you are.

Illus: When it comes to character we don’t measure ourselves rightly.
We like to measure ourselves against other people.
We think, I am not like those people over there.
That is self righteousness, we believe we are good because we live a “better” life than other people.
God does not measure us based on how we compare to others.
He judges us based on how we measure up to him.
Compared to God we are in no way good.
How do we know how foolish we are? How do we know the measurement God uses.
That is where God gave us the law. God wrote the law so that we would understand how he judges us, and what he expects from us.
(CSB)
21 So I discover this law:, When I want to do what is good, evil is present with me. 22 For in my inner self I delight in God’s law, 23 but I see a different law in the parts of my body,, waging war against the law of my mind and taking me prisoner to the law of sin in the parts of my body. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?
The Ten Commandments should leave us faithful.
The Ten Commandments should leave us faithful.

19 “You speak to us, and we will listen,” they said to Moses, “but don’t let God speak to us, or we will die.”
20 Moses responded to the people, “Don’t be afraid, for God has come to test you, so that you will fear him and will not sin.”
God’s law is a picture of the holiness we are called to. God gave the law so we would see when we sin.

20 Moses responded to the people, “Don’t be afraid, for God has come to test you, so that you will fear him and will not sin.”
Illus: Sometimes we as people are not the brightest bunch. We need constant reminders not to do dumb.
For example, warning lables on products.
On a stroller, “remove child before folding”
Apple warns “do not eat” on most of it’s products
On an electric drill, “this product is not intended for dental use”
On a lawn mower, “never use a lit match or open flame to check the fuel level”
on a dishwasher, “do not allow children to play in the dishwasher”
and finally, on a can of pepper spray, “may irritate eyes”
None of these warnings should be needed, but because we do dump, Warnings are put on for our good.
God has given us the law for our own good. Sin blinds the eyes and hardens the heart so that we cannot know or follow God. God has given us the law to expose sin so that we know where we fail. God has given us the law to show us what brings us death.
(CSB) 7 What should we say then? Is the law sin? Absolutely not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin if it were not for the law. For example, I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, Do not covet.
SIN’S USE OF THE LAW
7 What should we say then? Is the law sin? Absolutely not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin if it were not for the law. For example, I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, Do not covet.,
Just because you can’t keep the law, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pursue holiness.

Illus: Over the last 10 weeks I have preached some tough sermons.
There is a temptation to think, pastor, what you have called us to would cost me to much, I’m out.
Friends, I can’t live the sermons I have preached. It doesn't mean I wave the white flag.
Every day I should look at my life and look at scripture. I need to constantly allow God to change my heart to follow Jesus.
Do you desire to follow God, or has God’s call become white noise in your ears?
My fear is not that we are openly rejecting the call of God. My fear is that God's call, His holiness, and conviction has become white noise in our hearts. When God's call becomes white noise, we then have no trouble rejecting it.
(CSB)
15 What then? Should we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? Absolutely not! 16 Don’t you know that if you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of that one you obey—either of sin leading to death or of obedience leading to righteousness? 17 But thank God that, although you used to be slaves of sin, you obeyed from the heart that pattern of teaching to which you were handed over, 18 and having been set free from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness.
The Ten Commandments have left us separated from God.
The Ten Commandments have left us separated from God.

21 And the people remained standing at a distance as Moses approached the total darkness where God was.
When we see the holy standard of God and our inability to live up to His standards alone we would be hopeless. God’s plan from the beginning was not the law, but instead Christ.
When we see the holy standard of God and our inability to live up to His standards alone we would be hopeless. God’s plan from the beginning was not the law, but instead Christ.
Illus: The law was never the end of God’s plan. Jesus is.
God gave the law to show us his expectations, to show us we are fallen, to show us how much we need him.
God gave christ, to forgive us of our sin, to give us new life, to give us the spirit, and to give us eternity.
What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?
Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with my mind I myself am serving the law of God, but with my flesh, the law of sin.
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus,
because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.
