James intro Recap
James is an attempt to APPLY LG/LO in real practical ways to our lives.James compares it to looking into a mirror, but sometimes it feels like a slap in the face.We don't want to hear it...
Context: James is all about Bringing the GOSPEL what he calls,m “The Perfect Law that brings life” into our every day lives.
When Jesus says the greatest commandment is LGLO, James says, so what does that look like.
I - C-Diff story
I always wash my hands coming in and out of a room
Because @ chaplaincy...
That doctor saved me and probably others, I had no idea what was on my hands.
It would have wrecked my month.
Looking back I cant believe how careless I was

Trans: I think the way we talk is like that.
Because it seems small and insignificant we rarely give it much thought.
We
We talk like our words evaporate the minuet they leave our mouths.
We talk like our words can’t or shouldn't impact others.
We talk like they don't impact us.
The power of our words are an INTENTIONAL blindness's of our society today.
I say intentional because we all know the power of the words of others.
We know that the things others say to and about us can cause us tremendous harm.
Raise your hand if you can think of a time someone ruined your day, week, or year with something they said.
Raise your hand if you can think of a time a relationship that was seriously damaged by words.
Raise your hand if you can think of a time when something you said in confidence got spread to others.
Raise your hand if your friends ever looked at your differently because of a lie someone told.
Raise your hand if you have ever been a part of a workplace where everyone was so negative you dreaded going into work.
Raise your hand if you have ever read something someone posted on Facebook that ruined your day.
Raise your hand if you or someone you know was hurt by a rumor being spread about them.
Raise your hand if you read a snap or someone's snap-story that ruined your day.
Raise your hand if you are still carrying around with you words that someone said a very long time ago, words that they probably don't even remember, but have significantly shaped the course of your life.
Raise your hand if you have every said something you immediately wanted to take back.
We talk like our words don't really matter, BUT deep down we all have wounds that say otherwise.

Trans: James the author of the scripture we are focusing on today is intent on taking Jesus’ words seriously.
He comes at this topic of words with the same question he comes at every other part of life discussed in James.
How do we take Jesus’ words seriously.
The whole book of James is full of lessons about how to do what Jesus asks his disciples.
In Matthew Jesus says the greatest commandment is to Love God and Love Others.
So James says how do we LOVE GOD and LOVE OTHERS with our words?
James starts with some rapid fire analogies, trying to persuade his audience of the power of words or has he says, “The tongue.”
He says words are like a Bit in a horse’s mouth small, but it guides the horse.
Words are like rudder of a Massive ship.
Even though powerful winds and waves impact the ship the tiny rudder sets the course.
He says words are like that, the come from the little tongue but they set the course of families, communities, and churches.
And according to James, often times it is not for the best.
Next James gives some examples of how words are not only POWERFUL, but DESTRUCTIVE.
Like a spark that starts a forest fire.
I think if we are honest these analogies don’t need much explanation.
We have all I think seen words burn, words lead down one path or another.
These analogies work, not because they help us understand something that is hard to grasp.
NO they work because we have all seen how the fire of gossip, slander, or hatred has destroyed families, relationships, churches, and workplaces.
I dont know about you but when I hear, “Words are the spark that start a forest fire.”
I dont think, “huh?
thats interesting.”
NOPE
I think, “YEP BEEN THERE!”
We all know the power of words to wound because we have been wounded.
The challenge I think for us is very human.
The challenge is to see
“OUR WORDS as CAPABLE OF WOUNDING.”
That is what I don't really want to hear, and that is the point James is trying to make.
James puts it this way, in the most extreme terms possible.
6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body.
It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
and he emphasizes the spiritual damage it does as well.
9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.
10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing.
My brothers and sisters, this should not be.
11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?
12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs?
Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
Point: We are fire-breathers.
Our words burn people
wreck relationships
destroy churches
destroy people
They spread quickly
They even destroy the speaker, by separating us from GOD
They separate us from God - by making it so we cant really love GOd anymore
That’s right JAMES says is back to Jesus’ command.
Reminding us that YOU CANT LOVE GOD if you don't LOVE NEIGHBOR.
They are two sides of the same coin, because people are made in GOD’s IMAGE.\

Trans: If we are going to love God and Love others we have Got to figure out how to follow him in our speech.
Admit and confess the power of your words to kill, but also to heal.
Seek forgiveness.
Prayer of examine
E
At Bethel we developed a RELATIONAL COVENANT because we think this is such a big deal.
We need a heart transplant - BC when the source is wrong the outflow will be wrong.
W - Imagine what it would look like
What would happen in our workplaces if because God is changing our hearts we resolved to ONLY speak positively about your co-workers?
What would happen in our schools if because God is changing our hearts we started talking GOOD about people behind their backs?
What would happen in our families if because God is changing our hearts we sought forgiveness for our wounding words and offered it to others?
What would happen in our church if because God is changing our heart we listened first before speaking?
What would happen among our friends if because God is changing our heart we resolved to offer encouragement and healing words every chance we got?
In our world today that is so often filled with firebreathers retreating to their sides and lobbing verbal grenades of whatever wall we can find I would have to think that people might catch a little glimpse of the GOSPEL.
The good news that Jesus DIED so that our dead and corrupt hearts might be brought back to life.
The good news that Jesus died so that a bunch of salt water springs like you and me might be able changed at the source.
Bringing fresh life giving water instead of scorch ing fire.
Bringing new Resurrection life into all the places we go and people we interact with.
