Scripture Introduction

As we continue our study in the book of Colossians, I invite you to join me in . We are reminded that Christians are called to take of the old self and put on the new self. We have learned that this process is both by the will of God, but is also the responsibility of man. A few weeks ago we saw the virtues that of the Christian faith. Virtues that ought to be characterized in each of our lives and in the church itself. This week we shift our focus to the Christian household. From Church to home our Lord reigns. Before we hear the word of God, let’s pray.
Hear now the Word of God in verse 18,

18 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. 20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. 22 Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. 25 For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.

4 Masters, treat your bondservants justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.

Here ends our epistle lesson and this is the word of the Lord.

Sermon Introduction

This morning we have stumbled upon a problematic text in the contemporary world. If I were to take this text to most college campuses and merely read it, It would be met with protest. I would be labeled a bigot or sexist and I would lose opportunity to speak again. This may not be far from what we would experience in many churches. A regular response to this text in the pews across America is contempt and disgust for the apostle’s writings. Many have discredited all of Paul’s writing because of this common topic throughout his writings. Therefore, we have a difficult road ahead of us. While our culture and society has deconstructed every aspect of the Christian household, we are called to uphold God’s design for the family.
While our culture and society has deconstructed every aspect of the Christian household, we are called to uphold God’s design for the family.
If you remember, Paul has creation in mind during this section. Take off the old and put on the new was a reference to God’s work in Adam and Eve after the Fall. Therefore, in Jesus Christ, there is a restoration not only in ourselves and our churches, but also in our families.
