It seems incredible that anything as monumental as Gone With The Wind could have come about as a result of an accident. But it did. In 1926 Margaret; Mitchell, confined to her Atlanta apartment with a severely sprained ankle, rather tentatively started work on a novel about the Civil War to keep herself occupied. Because she lacked assurance, she worked in virtual secrecy over the next 4 years, eventually losing all interest in the massive project.
