Introduction

Greetings...
“In 1951 in Waterloo, Iowa a man died and left $70,000 in his will for “those of my relatives who are fundamentally Christians.” As a result of this wording a strange court case ensued involving a number of the kinfolk of the deceased. Time Magazine covered the trail in two issues under the striking heading: “Who Is A Christian?” In the final summation in December of 1951, Judge Charlton of Iowa City declared: “As a result of the testimony heard in this court I conclude that a Christian can believe almost anything or nothing.” The Judge gave the 70 thousand dollars to charity!” (Search The Scriptures: A Dozen Gospel Sermons by Johnny Ramsey pg. 27)
The tragic truth found sixty-seven years ago has only become worse now.
1 Peter 4:16 ESV
Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name.
The term Christian has been so trampled upon and watered down that most have no clue what a Christ-like person is according to the New Testament or Law of Christ.
One of the biggest reasons for this isn’t the denominational world or the world in general, no it’s because far too many of God’s elect today don’t examine themselves daily to make certain they are “demonstrating a Christ-like life.”
They don’t shout to the world their faith by their works ().
How many times have you known someone for a long time through work or other means only for the two of you to learn that each were members of the Lord’s body, His church?
Our opening statement and reflection of our life to others should be Christ () not Landon, Mark, Paul, Betty...
The focus of this lesson is to remind us “Why We Became A Christian” and to encourage each of us to have “Self Examination” and ask are we living in such a way that God is glorified through our faith?

To Wear The Greatest Name

The brother of Jesus & elder in the church at Jerusalem stated...

James 2:7 ESV
7 Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called?

The name Christian is the most noble and honorable name we could have.

It is the name promised by our God from days past.
It is the “new name” promised of God.
Isaiah 62:2 ESV
2 The nations shall see your righteousness, and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give.
It is the “only name” by which we can be saved.
Acts 4:12 ESV
12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Acts
It is the only name by which we strive to lead others to want and desire.
Acts 26:28–29 ESV
28 And Agrippa said to Paul, “In a short time would you persuade me to be a Christian?” 29 And Paul said, “Whether short or long, I would to God that not only you but also all who hear me this day might become such as I am—except for these chains.”

Summery

Why did we count the cost and obey the gospel of our Lord and Savior, because it gave a sinner like you and me a chance to wear the greatest name ever made for the creation of God.

To Posses The Greatest Influence

A genuine Christian is one that exacts influence on those around them.

Jesus would put it this way...
Matthew 5:13–16 ESV
13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Mt 5:
Philippians 2:15 ESV
15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,
Philippians 2:14–15 ESV
14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,

As Christians we are to influence people to the light.

We are to lead them from the darkness of sin into the light of God’s Word.
John 3:17 ESV
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Acts 26:18 ESV
18 to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’
Jn 3:
1 Peter 2:21 ESV
21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.
1 Pt
This isn’t something that is optional, we are required to imitate Christ and lead others through such.
1 Pt
1 Peter 2:21 ESV
21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.
1 Corinthians 11:1 ESV
1 Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.

Summery

Why did we count the cost and obeyed the gospel of our Lord and Savior, because we wanted to posses the greatest influence in this world for our God and so others can know that influence too.

To Meet The Highest Challenge

The most noble of mankind rejoice in a challenge.

Excellence is never found in the slothful or perpetually weak.
Excellence is found in those that pride themselves on reaching in the goal, correcting mistakes that makes one fall short and reasserting themselves back into noble adventure.

As Christians we reach for the highest challenge.

“The rugged call of pristine religion is always pointing us to higher, richer and more demanding life.” (Johnny Ramsey: Search The Scriptures A Dozen Gospel Sermons pg. 29).
This means we must surrender our will to God.
Ephesians 4:20–24 ESV
20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
This means we must reshape our thoughts.
Romans 12:1–2 ESV
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
This means we must sacrificially follow the Lord.
Luke 14:33 ESV
33 So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.
This means we must take up our cross daily and follow the Lord.
Luke 9:23 ESV
23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
Lk 9:

Summery

Why did we count the cost and obey the gospel of our Lord and Savior, because we had a zeal to meet the highest challenge.
There is nothing lackadaisical about being a Christian.

To Sustain The Dearest Relationship

Everyone wants to be in a good and loving relationship.

God created us with this longing for relationships in both man and woman.
Genesis 2:18 ESV
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”

As Christians we are a part of the dearest of all relationships.

We are sheep of the Good Shepherd.
John 10:2–3 ESV
2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
We are branches of the Vine of life.
John 15:5 ESV
5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
We are the bride of Christ.
Revelation 19:7 ESV
7 Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready;
We are adopted children of the Most High.
Romans 8:15 ESV
15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
Rom 8:15

Summery

Why did we count the cost and obey the gospel of our Lord and Savior, because as Christians we have the dearest and most precious relationship with our God that is possible.

Conclusion

As Christians we are free from sin (), free from insecurities (), free from pride (), free from worldliness (), free from fear (), free from selfishness (), free from death ().
Remember why you became a Christian and reexamine your life and ask the question “Have I been Christ-like to the point others see my faith and are asking about my hope in salvation ().
Invitation
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
