7 Things God Hates - Part 1

A. The love of God is beyond our understanding.
1. He loves lost sinners ()
Romans 5:8 NKJV
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
2. His love made salvation possible ()
John 3:16 NKJV
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
3. His love sent Jesus to the cross ()
1 John 4:10 NKJV
10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
B. But God hates things that bring His children pain.
C. Seven pain-producers are hated by God.
1. We will consider three of them today.
2. This text is a serious one, revealing what God hates.
Proverbs 6:16–19 NKJV
16 These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.
This six…seven pattern is also used in , and a similar pattern is used in various Proverbs. The purpose of this numerical pattern is not to give a complete list. Instead it is to stress the final (x + 1) item, as the culmination or product of the previous items mentioned.

God Hates a Proud Look (v. 17)

Proverbs 6:17 NKJV
17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood,
First on the list is pride, because pride is usually the basic motivation for all other sins.
1. It was pride that brought about the fall of Lucifer and turned him into Satan. ()
is 14.12-15
Isaiah 14:12–15 NKJV
12 “How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations! 13 For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north; 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’ 15 Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, To the lowest depths of the Pit.
2. Pride precedes destruction. ()
Proverbs 16:18 NKJV
18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.
3. “Haughty eyes belong not to the one who has been a learner at His feet who is ‘meek and lowly in heart’”. (H. A. Ironside)
4. Consider the Psalmist’s example… ()
Psalm 131:1 NKJV
1 Lord, my heart is not haughty, Nor my eyes lofty. Neither do I concern myself with great matters, Nor with things too profound for me.
“Lowliness and humility here relate to a sanctified heart, a will subdued to the mind of God” (C. H. Spurgeon). The second thing God hates...

God Hates a Lying Tongue (v. 17)

Proverbs 6:17 NKJV
17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood,
1. God is a God of truth. It’s one of the Ten Commandments. ()
Exodus 20:16 NKJV
16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
2. Lying actually began in the Garden of Eden (“You shall not surely die” )
3. Jesus called Satan the father of lies ()
John 8:44 NKJV
44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.
4. God desires truth deep within: an honest heart () God sees a lie not as an act of speech, but as a deadly force that goes to work in society and divides and destroys. When we lie, we open the door for Satan to work. God desires truth.
Psalm 51:6 NKJV
6 Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom.
5. “God desires not only outward virtue but inward purity.” (C. H. Spurgeon)
6. Jesus: “I am the way, the truth, and the life” () Third...

God Hates Hands That Shed Innocent Blood (v. 17)

Proverbs 6:17 NKJV
17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood,
1. The third sin God hates is murder. God’s grief over this came early: Cain and Abel ()
Genesis 4:5 NKJV
5 but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
2. This is also one of the Ten Commandments, “Thou shalt not kill” ()
3. God permits the government to exercise capital punishment and strengthen justice in the land (; ), but the shedding of innocent blood pollutes the land (
Conclusion:
A. While God hates sin, He offers full forgiveness.
1. Can you identify anything God hates in your life?
2. There is hope for us because of God’s grace ()
Ephesians 2:8–9 NKJV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
Thank God for His mercy and His grace. Next time together we will cover the rest.
