Under watchful eye
Jesus was never accused of being a traditional type of person.
In our passage today you will see that under a watchful eye by the religious establishment, Jesus is going to show the necessity of meeting the need of man more than the need to keep tradition.
Because of Jesus preaching ministry (1:14-15) people we taking notice of Jesus, why?
Because he was preaching was different, He was one preaching with authority (1:22).
His authority was proven by His actions.
Casting out the demon (1:21-26)
This one happened in the synagogue on the Sabbath
Healing the crowds (1:29-39)
First, Peters mother in law
Then the crowds
This happened after the Sabbath had ended
Healing the leper (1:40-44)
Jesus moved with compassion touched one who needed God’s touch
Proven by the paralytic healed (2:1-12)
Faithful friends bring one to come to have faith and obey by faith.
This happened in Jesus hometown
The scrutiny of the scribes intensifies
Jesus proclaimed his identity and His authority during this proof
Don’t forget the calling (1:16-20; 2:14-15)
Simon, Andrew, James and John called
Matthew called and dinner party with sinners (more scrutiny going on now)
Jesus and the Sabbath
Jesus was already bucking the system, the observance to the Jewish tradition of the Sabbath by the healings on the Sabbath, we will see another one next week in 3:1-12.
(Parallel passage Mt12:3-8)
This section before us today is not the first violation of the Sabbath, that is found in Jn5:5-9
We will develop more about the Sabbath as we work our way through this passage today and the passage next week.
In looking at the passage today the issue they have is.
The status quo have issue with the plucking grain
The status quo have issue with what they consider work on the Sabbath
Jesus has the perfect response
Two things that we will consider today from this passage
The Sabbath was made for man
The Son of Man is the Lord of the Sabbath
So now may we look at the passage, make some general observations then break down the passage.
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
I.
The Sabbath was made for man
The Sabbath was instituted by God and given to Moses after leaving Egypt, so it was not man who made the Sabbath, but God (Exo16:23-30; Exo20:8-10)
Exo16:22-
So whatever the sabbath is it comes on the 7th day, but we do not see the definition of the Sabbath except that it is holy.
Exo
So now, in looking at Exo20 passage what do you know about the Sabbath?
The Sabbath is on the 7th day
The Sabbath is holy and to be kept holy
No work is to be done
This Sabbath was previously unknown to them (Neh9:14; Deu5:2-3)
(Neh
It was part of the Covenant given to Israel, not to the patriarchs
The basis of the Sabbath (Exo20:11, 31:13-17; Deu5:15)
Commanded to Israel, not to others
You can see from this passage God made the Sabbath holy!
Man did not make it holy, but is charged with keeping it holy.
You can see a glimpse of the Sabbath in Gen2:3; but the reality of it happens here with Israel.
It was a special sign of the covenant between Israel and God
Who was God speaking to and about (v.13)?
What is the warning in (v.15)?
What is the command (17)?
Given to them as a reminder of the previous slavery in Egypt
To try to keep this really simple, man was made before the Sabbath, before the Sabbath was ever commanded to Moses and the children of Israel.
Some nuances under the Jewish traditions of the Sabbath
Cannot kindle fire for cooking (Exo35:3)
Cannot gather wood for fuel (Num15:32ff)
Cannot gather wood for fuel (Num15:32ff)
Cannot transact business (Neh10:31, 13:14)
Cannot transact business (Neh10:31, 13:14)
Can only travel so far (Jos3:4)
It was not illegal for someone who was hungry to eat fruit or grain on the Sabbath, but it was illegal to rub hands together, that was considered work (Deau23:24-25)
There is no doubt that according to the law, the disciples are in violation of it and Jesus is not contesting that, but is regarding the spirit of the Law.
Two principles Jesus addresses in this passage regarding the Sabbath
The Sabbath was made for man
and Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath and fulfills the Sabbath by grace not by the letter of the law.
Now let me move on to the Lord of the SabbathI.
II.
Lord of the Sabbath
Jesus tells them that the Son of Man is the Lord of the Sabbath after stating that the Sabbath was made for man; not man for the Sabbath.
As the Son of Man (Mk2:10) Jesus already claimed to have all authority so He could decide what was permissible and what was forbidden.
As the Son of God, He, being with the Father, was the one who created the Sabbath in the first place (Jn1:1-2, 8:58)
As the Son of God, He, being with the Father, was the one who created the Sabbath in the first place (Jn1:1-2, 8:58)
And look at Jn8:58
Then Jesus gets to the examples to prove the spirit of the law over the letter of the law (Mk2:25-26; 1Sam21:1-6; Mt12:5)
Then Jesus gets to the examples to prove the spirit of the law over the letter of the law (Mk2:25-26; 1Sam21:1-6; Mt12:5)
that comes from the story found in 1Sam21:1ff.
So we have the example of David violating the law; we also see the example of the priests who serve in the temple on the Sabbath break the law.
Just like we should appeal to the scripture to make a point, Jesus did the same in using these two examples to show the spirit of the law vs the letter of the law.
As the Lord of the Sabbath He had the sovereign authority to interpret the law and the use of the law.
Jesus authority to uphold the law (Heb1:3) and end the law (Eph2:14-16; Col2:14; 2Cor3:6-11; Heb8:6-13)
Since He upholds all things, he can rescind all things too
Upholds all things by the Word of His power!
Jesus came to fulfill the law; through HIseath on the cross
having nailed it to the cross as noted in Col2:14; The people, the Jews who come to Jesus die to the law
And the old covenant, the law, was replaced by the new covenant as noted in 2Cor3:6-11 and Heb8:6-13
I know we have limited time, but I need to press on a little more.
Jesus ending the requirements of the Sabbath is evident in other writings (COl2:16; Rom14:5)
Or then look at
As the Lord of the Sabbath, Jesus fulfilled the demands of the Sabbath by becoming our Sabbath, by becoming our rest.
May we base our thoughts regarding the Sabbath by the scripture.
May we worship the Lord of the Sabbath and not the Sabbath that was for Israel for a time before the Lord of the Sabbath.
While the Sabbath was an important part of Israel’s history we can learn about the spirit of the law vs. the letter of the law in our lives today.
Jesus saw the need of man more than the need for tradition, may we do the same, let the Lord of the Sabbath be our Lord!
