When you volunteer to serve, you don’t do it blindly. You don’t put your hand up, unless you know what the task entails. You consider the time, the resources, and the energy that is required. You count the cost. Which is exactly what Jesus calls all his potential followers to do. To consider the significance of the commitment. To be serious about what it might cost you. To be realistic. Whether you’re considering making such a commitment for the first time or it’s something you did a long time ago, the call to count the cost never diminishes. As long as the costs are real, we need to count them. As long as sacrifices are necessary, we need to make them. Possessions, family, life itself; these are all to be expendable in our devotion to Christ.
