Legacy Living

Intro- What pattern does your life set for those that follow after you? I’m reminded consistently in marital counseling how vital family history is.
Genesis 49:1–27 ESV
Then Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you what shall happen to you in days to come. “Assemble and listen, O sons of Jacob, listen to Israel your father. “Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, and the firstfruits of my strength, preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power. Unstable as water, you shall not have preeminence, because you went up to your father’s bed; then you defiled it—he went up to my couch! “Simeon and Levi are brothers; weapons of violence are their swords. Let my soul come not into their council; O my glory, be not joined to their company. For in their anger they killed men, and in their willfulness they hamstrung oxen. Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce, and their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel. “Judah, your brothers shall praise you; your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; your father’s sons shall bow down before you. Judah is a lion’s cub; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He stooped down; he crouched as a lion and as a lioness; who dares rouse him? The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples. Binding his foal to the vine and his donkey’s colt to the choice vine, he has washed his garments in wine and his vesture in the blood of grapes. His eyes are darker than wine, and his teeth whiter than milk. “Zebulun shall dwell at the shore of the sea; he shall become a haven for ships, and his border shall be at Sidon. “Issachar is a strong donkey, crouching between the sheepfolds. He saw that a resting place was good, and that the land was pleasant, so he bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant at forced labor. “Dan shall judge his people as one of the tribes of Israel. Dan shall be a serpent in the way, a viper by the path, that bites the horse’s heels so that his rider falls backward. I wait for your salvation, O Lord. “Raiders shall raid Gad, but he shall raid at their heels. “Asher’s food shall be rich, and he shall yield royal delicacies. “Naphtali is a doe let loose that bears beautiful fawns. “Joseph is a fruitful bough, a fruitful bough by a spring; his branches run over the wall. The archers bitterly attacked him, shot at him, and harassed him severely, yet his bow remained unmoved; his arms were made agile by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob (from there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel), by the God of your father who will help you, by the Almighty who will bless you with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that crouches beneath, blessings of the breasts and of the womb. The blessings of your father are mighty beyond the blessings of my parents, up to the bounties of the everlasting hills. May they be on the head of Joseph, and on the brow of him who was set apart from his brothers. “Benjamin is a ravenous wolf, in the morning devouring the prey and at evening dividing the spoil.”

genesis 49:1-

The Blighted

There are those of us that come from and/or will leave a blighted legacy for our children
Simeon, Levi & Reuben all committed grevious sins against there father.
Simeon, Levi & Reuben all committed heinous sins against their father.
In their lust for power they defiled themselves and never could shake the stench of it.
In their lust for power they defiled themselves and never could shake the stench of it.
Reuben went up to sleep with his fathers concubine and essentially made a play for the leadership of the familysdssddrffgtt4fgtuggukjjlk 3x SBC rdscsgdggghhh yhhhkmkjkloop
Reuben went up to sleep with his fathers concubine and essentially made a play for the leadership of the family
Reuben should have inherited it all! Position, Portion and Priesthood
Instead these were doled out amongst the other brothers
There is a lust for power that will leave you destitute
The power to control your circumstances and write your own destiny. This is the power to rule!
Reuben was called “preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power...”, this is what he could’ve been.
Reuben’s appetites corrupted his potential, do you have yours in check?
God of this nation is comfort. The ability to craft your settings at your whim to suit your desires.
Maybe that isn’t you. Maybe you’re more like Simeon and Levi, who had a thirst for righteousness yet believe the ends justified the means.
The poisoned passions, forms of godliness, I feel it so it must be “truers.”
Simeon and Levi felt so strongly that their sister had been wronged and sought justice that they were willing to do whatever it took to get it.
Were they right in their assessment that their sister had been wronged and that Jacob wasn’t doing what he ought to as her father? Yes!
However, vengeance was not theirs to take. Nor was vengeance to be achieved through deceit.
There are things that people deserve and to be honest, you deserve and yet it is not yours to achieve! Be careful of your appetites!
Because of these behaviors the rest of their lineage was damaged for generations to come. When the time came for portions to be handed out, they received nothing. Reuben and Simeon essentially cease to exist after entering the Promised Land later and Levi was spread out throughout the cities.
TR: SOME OF US AREN’T BLIGHTED THOUGH, WE’RE JUST BYSTANDERS...

The Bystander

,
There were other brothers however that were bystanders cf
Did they not know of Simeon and Levi’s intentions? I doubt it.
What when Reuben went and defiled his fathers bed, did they stop him from committing such an act? No!
What about when Reuben went and defiled his fathers bed, did they stop him from committing such an act? No!
The rest of the brothers it seems spent most of their time going along with the rest. Just falling in line.
They are still blessed because of their connection with Jacob but mostly are forgettable in their lives.
There is an extreme danger in standing by. Silent in times of wrongdoing, complicit but not a leader.
Nonetheless they are still blessed and this is the beauty of God’s promise
No matter the good or the bad, because of your connection, you will be saved
1 Corinthians 3:12–15 ESV
Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.
1 Corinthians 3:12
2 Corinthians 5:10 ESV
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.
Are you a bystander in Christ? Just trying to get along? You will in fact be blessed based on your connection with the blesser, Jesus Christ, but what will he say of you?
Zebulun, Issachar, Dan, Gad, Asher, Naphtali, Benjamin all were blessed by God!
Sailors, warriors, judges, rich in food, etc. all of the things that someone might want. However, they pale in comparison to those truly blessed
I want to run a race not as a bystander but as someone whose life paves the way for blessings to come to my descendants for generations to come.
TR: LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THOSE GUYS WHO WERE TRULY BLESSED...

The Blessed

Blessed: ,
Genesis 49:8–12 ESV
“Judah, your brothers shall praise you; your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; your father’s sons shall bow down before you. Judah is a lion’s cub; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He stooped down; he crouched as a lion and as a lioness; who dares rouse him? Genesis
Are you blessed in the Lord?
We see in this time that Jacob spoke highly of two of his sons and that directly impacted their lineage, Joseph and Judah.
Joseph received a part of what was due the first born which was the “double portion” based on his sons Ephriam and Manasseh.
His future is described as fruitful, branches overflowing, attacked yet unmoved, blessings from above, blessings from the deep, blessings of nourished children, set Apart from his brothers
His faithfulness in the midst of adversity set the course for his legacy
You have to remember what this guy went through and how he overcame! Not with the expectation of being blessed but because he wanted to be found faithful!
Blessings don’t come out of seeking them but out of a devotion to God. A devotion to God only comes from a heart set aflame with a love for Jesus Christ. And a heart set aflame with a love for Jesus Christ comes first through an understanding of how much He has loved you!
So you want to be blessed?! Think of how much Jesus has loved you in the midst of adversity! When everything was gone and ALL YOU HAD WAS HIM!
When you were in that dungeon of depression, forgotten and betrayed and you didn’t waiver! Everyone counted you for DEAD and yet here you are LIVING! PRAISE GOD!!
You want to be blessed?! Recognize you are the Lord’s and cherish in that and watch the rest be handled by the Lord
Maybe you’re like Judah
Judah displayed great repentance and leadership after his failures with selling Joseph and failure with Tamar.
We see that then Judah was given what was 1/3 of the firstborn blessing, namely leadership.
Does anyone else find it ironic that the scepter of leadership went not to the one that overcame the most, or the strongest, but to the one that knew he messed up and repented!
And not just repented but that repentance bore fruit.
Be broken before the Lord, acknowledge your wrong, lay down yourself as a sacrifice and watch the Lord bless your generations with leadership
See what we miss about leaders is that a true leader’s strength comes from humility not ability
Judah was blessed beyond measure, because in this we see a beautiful promise of the Messiah Jesus Christ.

Genesis 49:10 NASB95
“The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes, And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
From this we see that Judah will be the tribe that God has elected to produce the promised Messiah and for generations to come Israel would wait for this to come true. What a blessing!
Next we see Joseph.
Joseph received a part of what was due the first born which was the “double portion” based on his sons Ephriam and Manasseh.

Do you know how secure you are with the Lord! How he surrounds you, lifts you up, and even if this life perishes, those who come after you will reap the rewards of your faithfulness!
Me setting my children up not having had an example to follow. In many ways my lineage starts with me! Starting from scratch as an entrepreneur and pastor feeling alone, having suffered wounds, failures, etc. and yet I know the Lord is with me.
