Intro: Today, we jump into one of the most provocative books of the bible…the 27th book of the bible…the book of Daniel...It’s the 5th and final book in the collection of prophetic writings that are referred to as the Major Prophets
The book of Daniel has been the battlefield between conservative and liberal scholars for years. The heat of battle is now past— with each side claiming a major victory. However, the very fact that the book of Daniel remains intact in Scripture and that the early dating of this book (the sixth century b.c.) has been maintained successfully by conservative scholars against the massed onslaught of liberal biblical criticism:

The first section of the Bible is called the ‘Pentateuch’ - literally the five books - written by Moses - Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy

The second section of the Old Testament is the ‘Historical’ books – 12 books that span between Joshua and Esther. The historical books are the Divinely-inspired narrative that tell the history of the nation of Israel. In those historical books we see Israel in the land of promise; we see them removed from the land of promise; and we see them returned to the land of promise
The Law - First 5 books

The third section of the Bible is called the ‘Poetic’ books – Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, The Song of Solomon - None of them advance the narrative of Israel’s history. They lay over Israel’s history.

“So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand),
Daniel the Man - We know more of Daniel the man than we do of any other prophet. He gave us a personal account of his life from the time he was carried captive to Babylon in the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim, which was about 606 b.c. (), until the first year of King Cyrus, which was about 536 b.c. ( and also 9:2). Daniel’s life and ministry bridged the entire 70 years of captivity. At the beginning of the book he is a boy in his teens, and at the end he is an old man
There are 4 things that characterize Daniel’s life: purpose, prayer, and prophecy and powerful example
Daniel was a man of purpose - (; ). He deter- mined that he would not be defiled by the immorality of paganism or be involved in the degradation of idolatry.
1 Daniel was a man of purpose (; ). He deter- mined that he would not be defiled by the immorality of pa- ganism or be involved in the degradation of idolatry. This is the practical teaching of prophecy.
The study of prophecy should not lead to fanaticism or sensationalism. Rather, it should lead to a life of holiness and fear of the Lord.
And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. ()

Daniel was a man of prayer - (; ; ; ). His total life and his every decision in a pagan court were paved by prayer.

The study of prophecy should not be engaged in for the satisfaction of curiosity or to be grist for polemic argumentation. Instead, it should inspire us to spiritual living and an earnest study of the Word of God.

Daniel was a man of prophecy - The bulk of his book re- lates to prophetic themes. Our Lord labeled him, “Daniel the prophet” () we’re gonna look at that in the next few weeks
Daniel was a man of powerful example - Some believe that not only did daniel lose his family when he was taken captive, but also may have been castrated…yet amidst all of that abuse…he kept his faith and stayed the course
Date: Daniel wrote his book in Babylon, probably sometime after 536 BC, the date of the last recorded event in the text. Some scholars suggest the year 530 BC.
Daniel’s writing in hindsight; but he’s writing what he saw as a teenager.

In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the vessels of the house of God. And he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and placed the vessels in the treasury of his god.

In 605 BC, under the leadership of Nebuchadnezzar, Babylon swept down into Israel from Carchemish in northern Syria, fresh off a power-shifting victory over Egypt. Its target? Jerusalem. In the first of three waves of attack, siege, and capture, Babylonian forces deported a group of Jerusalem’s finest young people, including a teenager named Daniel.
Now if there were news channels in these days the headline would simply ready Israel falls into the hands of King Nebuchadnezzar…but thats not how Daniel saw it at all…He says “The Lord gave Judah over to him”
How would Daniel have known that? - Because Daniel was a young boy when one of them in particular, Jeremiah, was prophesying so clearly in Jerusalem and in Judah. He sent His prophets to announce the coming of Babylon, to announce the destruction of Jerusalem, and their 70 years of captivity in Babylon.

Here’s the picture: Daniel sees God in the midst of the chaos…He knew that this was God disciplining His people, sending them into captivity for 70 years in Babylon because of their rebellion and disobedience
Listen to this – in the book of Exodus, chapter 20, it’s where we find the Ten Commandments. Here’s how God prefaces it.
Then the king commanded Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch, to bring some of the people of Israel, both of the royal family and of the nobility, youths without blemish, of good appearance and skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding learning, and competent to stand in the king’s palace, and to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans. The king assigned them a daily portion of the food that the king ate, and of the wine that he drank. They were to be educated for three years, and at the end of that time they were to stand before the king. Among these were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah of the tribe of Judah.

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
“You shall have no other gods before me.
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,
Now Nebuchadnezzar was typical of the ruthless absolute monarchs of that age. But he was also a man of intelligence and a far looking vision. He instituted a radical plan of social engineering. He deliberately chose the most able promising captives.
God was doing exactly what He said He would…And Daniel is see this...Daniel saw exactly what was going on as a young man. He processed life through the existence of God, and the presence of God at work in human history to accomplish His plans and purposes.
In the course of this book Daniel uses the term, “Most High God” four times. That’s crucial. As a young man Daniel knew that God was above every earthly authority
App: Why is that so important to remember? Because we always need to know that God is always in control…even in the hard times of your life

They were to be educated for three years, and at the end of that time they were to stand before the king. Among these were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah of the tribe of Judah.
So here we see the plan of Nebuchadnezzar…To take the young, best, and brightest and over the course of 3 years…by the mean’s of “Literature and language” make these foreign boys locals boys..
Notice how the engineering took place
They had had a target audience - youths without blemish, of good appearance and skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge - Why young people? because experience shows us that with youth comes possibilities…as I’ve gotten older and more set in my ways, change becomes harder and harder…I fight against it, but it’s there…but young people are passionate, creative, and open to change, thats whats make them valuable and thats why Satan wants them
Thats why Solomon said “Remember the Lord in the days of your youth”
But not just the young but the talented and good looking - They wanted the talented and good looking because…for some reason to have those makes you instantly influential
We see this in life, we see this in church…it’s the coolest, the one with the most followers who has the most influence
They wanted to make them like the culture - literature and language of the Chaldeans - the whole purpose of this was to teach indoctrinate them in the ways of the culture and the way the Chaldeans were gonna get through to the boys was in their books, it was in their plays, in things that could captivate their mind...it was everywhere
The way the Chaldeans were gonna get through to the boys was in their books, it was in their plays, in things that could captivate their mind...it was everywhere
literature and language of the Chaldeans. Methodical - The king assigned them a daily portion of the food that the king ate, and of the wine that he drank - You if i told you black is white all night tonight i would walk away saying “Joe’s losing his mind”…but if for the next 3 years told you every single day black was white, and made tv commercials saying black is white, and I got your friends to get in on it…eventually you would begin to think...”is black really white?” thats the method that the kings is using here…He can’t change them over night…but he can do it bit by bit over the course of time
What does that look like today? Net flex and you tube and movies - did you know that you have 3.3 billion followers and uploads 300 hours of content a minute?
- You if i told you black is white all night tonight i would walk away saying “Joe’s losing his mind”…but if for the next 3 years told you every single day black was white, and made tv commercials saying black is white, and I got your friends to get in on it…eventually you would begin to think...”is black really white?” thats the method that the kings is using here…He can’t change them over night…but he can do it bit by bit over the course of time
Who are the philosophers of today? - The creatives are the philosophers of this age:
We trust celebrities
We trust the artist
We trust athletes
We downgrade the bible teacher
How crazy is that?
They tried to indoctrinate them everyday - The king assigned them a daily portion of the food that the king ate, and of the wine that he drank - You if i told you black is white all night tonight i would walk away saying “Joe’s losing his mind”…but if for the next 3 years told you every single day black was white, and made tv commercials saying black is white, and I got your friends to get in on it…eventually you would begin to think...”is black really white?” thats the method that the kings is using here…He can’t change them over night…but he can do it bit by bit over the course of time

Why did they want to do this? because they wanted to take away their identity
Why did they want to do this? because they wanted to take away their identity
Big point: all of this was in an attempt to make these young outsiders…insiders…And that’s exactly what the god of this world wants to do with every Christian
App: And that’s exactly what the god of this world wants to do with every Christian
Among these were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah of the tribe of Judah. And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names: Daniel he called Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego.
And that’s exactly what the god of this world wants to do with every Christian.
dan 1:6
Daniel, his name means – God is judge. Hananiah means – The LORD is gracious. Mishael means – Who is Like the LORD. And Azariah means – The LORD helps...But the king of Babylon comes in and changes there name...Belteshazzar means – May Baal protect life. Shadrach means – Illumined by Roc. Meshach means – Who is like Aku? And Abednego means – The servant of Nebo.
Man, their names just compose this beautiful theme as these boys were taken to Babylon.
But the king of Babylon comes in and changes there name
7Andthe chief of the eunuchsgave them names:Daniel he called
Belteshazzar means – May Baal protect life. Shadrach means – Illumined by Roc. Meshach means – Who is like Aku?
Verse - “
Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego.”
Belteshazzar means – May Baal protect life. Shadrach means – Illumined by Roc. Meshach means – Who is like Aku?
Now their names – it might seem a slight thing that they sound close; they’re not all that far removed. So what’s so big? It’s huge because they’re trying to strip their identity as believers in the one true and living God.
Richard Cimino – Route66 - 20150824_Daniel
This was the agenda. This is what they wanted to do...to transform these boys who were outsiders into insiders
And Abednego means – The servant of Nebo.

This was the agenda.
This is what they wanted to transform these boys into.
And especially the generation of young people, to strip away their identities,
Thats what God of this world wants to do you us...He wants to strip away your identity...He wants to just press against you, and press against you from every direction especially this next Generation so that in the end they’ll be insiders in a culture of idolatry, not foreigners who threaten it.
The God of this He wants to strip away your identity...He wants to just press against you, and press against you from every direction especially this next Generation so that in the end they’ll be insiders in a culture of idolatry, not foreigners who threaten it.

so that in the end they’ll be –
The Bible says that we, as Christians, live as “strangers and pilgrims in this world”. Some of your Bibles would translate it as “foreigners in this world”
insiders in a culture of idolatry, not foreigners who threaten it.
Paul writing to the Philippians, he says, “Our citizenship is from Heaven.” He was writing this to the Philippians. They were citizens of Rome. They lived in a little replica of Rome in their city of Philippi. The city streets ran the same way as the streets in Rome ran. Everything about it was just a replica of Rome. They knew what it was like to be in a colony. And Paul says, “Yeah, that’s your earthly address. But your real citizenship is from Heaven, from which we eagerly await the return of our Lord and Savior Jesus
The Bible says that we, as Christians, live as “strangers and pilgrims in this world”. Some of your Bibles would translate it as “foreigners in this world”.
Here’s the warning: The god of this world wants to methodically strip away our identity and even more young people “You’re identity” This culture is a slow boiling pot…and if you immerse yourself in it…sooner of later you will be cooked
This culture is a slow boiling pot…and if you immerse yourself in it…sooner of later you will be cooked
So what should we do?…Lets do what Daniel did
Daniel’s bold choice
Daniel’s bold choice
And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names: Daniel he called Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego.
But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king’s food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself.

It’s very interesting that Daniel did not protest about having to go to the University of Babylon. It says that he learned the ways of the Chaldeans. Those were the astrologers of the day
He learned their sciences. He learned their mythology. He learned their sorcery.

public schools, and especially you college students – It’s very interesting that Daniel did not protest about having to go to the University of Babylon. It says that he learned the ways of the Chaldeans. Those were the astrologers of the day
That word means to “compile or put together”
In the NKJV It says that “He purposed in his heart”
Here’s the picture: Daniel took what he did know of the Word of God. Daniel compiled what he did know of the God of Israel...he connected the dots; he compiled the information, the truth that God’s prophets had declared, the truth of what was recorded in the Scriptures up to that time. He took all of it; and he compiled it as a young man. And he said, “Idolatry is wrong. And I’m never going to go there.”
Here’s a 13 year old boy, had his family taken from him…and yet he resolved in his heart that he wasn’t gonna partake in what the world had to offer…and he would go down in history as one greatest men in the bible
App 1: Thats why it’s so important to take God’s word seriously now when your young…Take it, Make a decision about it…commit yourself to it
App 2: Sooner or later you have to compile all that you’ve been told about God yourself and make a decision
And God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs,
When a man’s ways please the Lord,
he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.
DAN 1:
PRO 16:7
And God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs, and the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who assigned your food and your drink; for why should he see that you were in worse condition than the youths who are of your own age? So you would endanger my head with the king.”

I don’t blame this guy for thinking that...you might remember that Nebuchadnezzar killed the children of King Jehoiakim right before his eyes. He literally brought Jehoiakim’s children before him, and killed them in his sight. And then he gouged out Jehoiakim’s eyes so that the last thing he would ever remember seeing was his children being murdered.

Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had assigned over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, “Test your servants for ten days; let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king’s food be observed by you, and deal with your servants according to what you see.”
dan 1:11
Now personally I cannot imagine a 13 year old saying, “Hey, I don’t want a cheeseburger. Can I have the kale? that sounds terrible…but thats how commited they were
murdered. Nebuchadnezzar’s favorite indoor sport was to barbeque his enemies. Remember Shadrach, Meshach and Abenego – he threw them into a fiery furnace, right? If anybody hassled him he’d cut off their heads, and make their house a dung hill. You didn’t mess with Nebuchadnezzar.
Young people…Following will be greatly rewarding…but it comes at a price
So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days. At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate the king’s food. So the steward took away their food and the wine they were to drink, and gave them vegetables.
Dan 1:
Normally if you just eat fruit and vegetables for ten days you don’t get fat. There’s no fat content in veggies, right? So this is a God thing that happened. They gained weight because there was supernatural assistance happening here.
As for these four youths, God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
So here’s the picture…these four young people, they chose to follow God, to not indulge in the delicacies of the culture…but instead to feast on that which grows
Normally if you just eat fruit and vegetables for ten days you don’t get fat. There’s no fat content in veggies, right? So this is a God thing that happened. They gained weight because there was supernatural assistance happening here. And that’s what this book is all about. It’s about God who’s above all stepping into human affairs.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

Think of the wisdom of Solomon. He didn’t learn that from his dad. His dad was a shepherd, right? He got it from God.
Now I’m not gonna push the vegan deal…as a physical diet

God gave them wisdom.
There’s wisdom to be received from God. They were to be educated for three years7-12 Prophetic preview
But i will tell you this - This is a great idea as a spiritual diet - Jesus told the parable of the sower, and how he went out and he sowed seed. And Jesus said that the seed that was sown was the Word of God.
And that speaks to us, guys. It encourages us to choose for our diets, for our emotional need, and our spiritual need, we chose the seed of the Word of God that make us wise unto salvation.

It encourages us to choose for our diets, for our emotional need, and our spiritual need, we should choose things sown, things sown into our lives from the Word of God that make us wise unto salvation. I want to challenge you tonight to choose for yourself a diet of things sown over the diet that the rest of the world is trying to feed on, all of the self-help books, and all of the bookstores and online stuff, you go to Amazon, and the stuff that just floods the best seller’s there. deepest need of their lives. And it never will.
Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart
as you’re willing to apply yourself to learning. And as these young Hebrews had to do, they were under intense supervision to study, God gave them wisdom.
So remarkably, as these guys are saying we’re going to give ourselves to things sown, God gives to them this wisdom. And, again, Daniel’s writing in hindsight. And as he looks back – think of this – as he looks back and writes this first chapter there’s no whining. He doesn’t say, “Oh it was so hard. You should have seen the tears in my dad’s eyes.” I’m sure he saw the tears in his dad’s eyes. He doesn’t say a thing about
At the end of the time, when the king had commanded that they should be brought in, the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. And the king spoke with them, and among all of them none was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Therefore they stood before the king.

2 Chron 16:9
For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him. You have done foolishly in this, for from now on you will have wars.”
Conclusion: Here’s the deal, the pull of the culture is real...Yet here’s this young man, stripped of everything that would give to him meaning by man’s standards....And he commits himself to the Lord. And he ends up being the most trusted advisor to the most powerful rulers of his day.
Yet here’s this young man, stripped of everything that would give to him meaning by man’s standards. And he commits himself to the Lord. And he ends up being the most trusted advisor to the most powerful rulers of his day.
God is the same today. Guys, that’s the heart of our vision for you, to see a bunch of men and women committed to God, ten times better than the best that the world has to offer.
Here’s the question: Do you want it?
Are you willing to stand for Jesus in a world gone Mad
Are you willing to say “no” to what the world has to offer so that you can say yes to what God has for you
