We are told that he has been cast out of heaven and is on earth
Jesus tells us in Luke...
“I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
the ruler of the kingdom of the air (Eph 2:2);
The god of this age (2 Cor 4:4);
The prince of this world (John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11),
[Satan is called the prince, and the god, of this world, because he exercises an influence/control over men who are his willing subjects
This is by far the majority of the world’s population ( but it is shrinking)
Also...
4 Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe.
People who do not know God and don’t desire to know God are spiritually blinded
The devil can tell them anything and they will believe it
Think of some of the theories out there
Before Christ and the church, satan had unchallenged dominion
God had given the world and everything in it to man
Man chose to not follow the voice of God but the enemy’s voice
So the enemy controlled humanity & therefore controlled all he owned
He lead people to worship creation (self-pleasure-human wisdom-) and not the creator
He created hundreds and hundreds of different forms of worship
Throughout recorded history, we can count anywhere from 8,000–12,000 gods who have been worshiped.
Egypt, Babylon, Hindu, earth religions, Stonehenge, Aztec, indigenous religions
Yet in some of these worshipers was a heart after the true God
Romans 2 tells us about it
God had to send truth into the world.....so he sent Jesus
John 18 tells us this when Jesus says
I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth.
All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.”
Suddenly the world witnessed the true God, demonstrated in his power over everything
and the elements obey him
27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this?
Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
Jesus started casting out the devil from people’s lives and teaching true faith in God
And gave his disciples the ability to do so in his name
But the greatest act of power over satan was demonstrated at Calvary
Jesus made an open show of satan
How did he do this?
Verse 13 tells us...
13 You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away.
Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins.
14 He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.
Corinthians says..
“For our sake he made him [Jesus] to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God”
Finally sin was dealt with once and for all
sins ability to separate us from God was over
earthly & Eternal relationship with God is now possible
Jesus said....
“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am,and to see my glory,
The first great demonstration of Christs power over the enemy happened during the three days of his death
Peter tells us...
So he went and preached to the spirits in prison— those who disobeyed God long ago
Paul gives us more information about what happened then
8 This is why it says:“When he ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people.”
9 (What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions
And Christ, then takes the believers in paradise and releases them from that prison.
They have been there waiting for the final and complete payment for sin they looked forward to.
These righteous souls could not be released into heaven until the penalty for sin had actually been paid.
After Jesus had sacrificed Himself, He went down into Hades and in some way took the righteous from Hades with Him into heaven.
He took captivity captive and they became the captives of Jesus and of righteousness.
But satan is not fully cast out yet…?
He is still working in the world
That’s were the church ( you and I ) comes in
Jesus said this to the disciples (you and I)
you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Jesus said to them also
18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
Jesus also said
19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy;
The church ( you & I) are continuing the “casting out” of the enemy from the lives of people
The devil is cast out of anything/anyone that Jesus is invited into
The final casting out from the earth will happen when Jesus returns
Revelation says
15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said:
“The kingdom of the world has become
the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah,
and he will reign for ever and ever.”
16 And the twenty-four elders, who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces and worshiped God, 17 saying:
“We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty,
the One who is and who was,
because you have taken your great power
and have begun to reign.
18 The nations were angry,
and your wrath has come.
The time has come for judging the dead,
and for rewarding your servants the prophets
and your people who revere your name,
both great and small—
and for destroying those who destroy the earth.”
19 Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant.
And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.
The finally the devil is cast out from the world.
